Katie Holmes versus Kate Mara: Who wore Michael Kors best in the front row?

New York Fashion Week has us pretty excited for next spring, especially considering that our many of our favourite trends (like the crop top and ‘90s minimalism) are still going strong. With bralettes, sheer skirts and floral-print maxi dresses all featured at yesterday’s Michael Kors Spring 2014 show, we’re officially ready to skip winter. While all eyes were on the runway, two actresses, Katie Holmes and Kate Mara, lit up the front row in outfits by America’s favourite billionaire designer.
As someone who’s usually seen running about town in basic pieces, Katie Holmes’ floral ensemble was a breath of fresh air. Wearing head-to-toe Michael Kors from the Pre-Fall 2013 collection, Holmes’ ensemble consisted of a leaf cashmere knit sweater and a rose-print midi-length skirt. Keeping her accessories simple (and all in neutral shades), she added a skinny belt to cinch her waist, carried a minimalist clutch and wore pointed-toe heels also from the same collection. Appearing relaxed, Holmes pulled her hair back in a sophisticated updo and kept her makeup neutral, allowing her natural beauty to shine.

Street Style, New York: 53 photos of style stars (and Barbara Walters!) braving the heat outside Spring 2014 fashion week
Photography by Stefania Yarhi Despite the scorching heat wave, street style regulars were definitely into leather on day six of New York Fashion Week Spring 2014.
Many fashion enthusiasts layered classic leather jackets or vests over their summery outfits, but Miroslava Duma and blogger Chiara Ferragni rocked the leather trend by pulling out maxi and studded mini respectively.
The Beckerman sisters joined in on the leather-clad fun. While Samantha Beckerman opted for a pleated black skirt and a Marc Jacobs Mickey Mouse sweater, Cailliane went rocker chic in a Rodarte black and red-fringed leather vest and Mickey printed leggings. Style to spare in duplicates, those girls.
Accessories were definitely making a statement on the streets. From Leandra Medine’s colourful arm candy to a furry black and blue clutch adding texture to a head to toe black ensemble, accessories were stealing the spotlight. Even the much-coveted mini Chanel hula-hoop purse made an appearance.
While the vast majority strutted the streets outside New York Fashion Week in killer heels, flats, sneakers and furry Céline sandals were the popular and definitely more comfortable choice. Even Anna Dello Russo, the queen of statement stilettos, wore leather boots, albeit bejewelled and bedazzled.

Street Style, New York: 56 photos of Eva Chen, Susie Bubble, BryanBoy and Rumi Neely outside Spring 2014 fashion week
Photography by Stefania Yarhi We’re already more than halfway through New York Fashion Week Spring 2014 (day five to be exact) and the street style stars just keep knocking it out of the park, layer by layer.
While the crop top is certainly a mainstay, our cross border friends proclaimed their love for the Canadian tuxedo. Case in point: this fashion enthusiast who strutted the streets in a full on onesie carrying not one but four 3.1 Phillip Lim shopping bags (We’d love to be her friend).
While fashion show regulars like Caroline Issa and Miroslava Duma flirted with the black and white trend, Man Repeller aka Leandra Medine played with a softer side with a pastel pink oversized blazer.

New York Fashion Week backstage beauty: Spring 2014 is a battle between brights and barely-there

Backstage at Jason Wu on Friday, I spotted it from across the room: bright, metallic sparkle all over the models’ eyelids. Diane Kendal for Lancôme created a dramatic but refined eye look for Wu inspired by Marlene Dietrich. “We wanted the eye to reflect light,” said Kendal. “To give it that feeling of summer.” The base was a caramel-y brown shade (Lancôme Color Design Eye Brightening All-in-One 5 Pan Shadow & Liner Palette in “Bronze Amour”); then she used a damp brush, dipped it in fine glitter, and applied it to the centre of the eye. The effect was completely luminous. And the rest of the face was bare…a trend that would continue backstage at the weekend’s other Spring 2014 shows as well.

The sun was out on day four of New York Fashion Week Spring 2014. So were the style stars and their accessories. Carine Roitfeld’s wrap-around sunglasses were totally Star Trek and totally amazing. Just as great was Giovanna Battaglia’s pilgrim belt that was so wide it could probably double as a shirt (see below re: crop tops). But it was neckgear that was the must-have accessory of the moment. These jewels were so chunky they were essentially clavicle armour. Case in point: Man Repeller Leandra Medine’s Frankensteinian choker.
Also out in full force? Shoulders. Like those of Moda Operandi’s Taylor Tomasi Hill and Danielle Prescod, who were just two of the showgoers to embrace the off the shoulder and strapless looks. And it if wasn’t a shoulder it was (still!) definitely a tummy. If the sidewalks have anything to say about it, crop tops will be around for a while.

We’re deep into New York Fashion Week Spring 2014 and the sidewalks are officially stacked with the biggest names in fashion—-Solange! Hanne! Giovanna! Put all those fashionistas together and you get a sidewalk-turned-runway full of inspirational, colourful, and sometimes outlandish clothing.
Being total ‘90s children, all the grunge styling had Nirvana on repeat in our heads for the third season running. Plaid and denim were featured in everything from Canadian tuxedos (what what!) to jumpsuits to ankle length denim skirts. So totally ‘90s!. Leather showed up on track pants, dresses, and the sleeves of the most covet-worthy trench of all time. Even The Newsroom’s Emily Mortimer was wearing leather Jason Wu get-up.

New York Fashion Week: Dispatch from the front lines of Spring 2014’s feisty first day
Photography by Peter Stigter Time to break out the crop tops, sunglasses and novelty sweatshirts, New York Fashion Week is here. With over 350 shows on the calendar this season there’s a lot to see, tweet and covet. Here are our favourite moments from the front lines of fashion week.
Karlie Kloss’ steals the spotlight at Jason Wu
Jason Wu’s spring collection saw the go-to FLOTUS designer take his signature sophistication in a more relaxed direction for spring. Slinky metallic halter dresses, silk crepe safari jumpsuits and soft slouchy sweaters in creamy whites, sage greens and hits of black and blue had iPhone cameras flying (but not tweeting thanks to the much-maligned lack of reception). The show was a fast-moving flurry of subtle sparkle, shine and fluid silhouettes, but time seemed to stop when Karlie Kloss stepped onto the runway. Wearing a silky pale sage gown with elaborate embroidered hem, Kloss took a deliberately slower pace than the other girls, seductively weaving her way down the catwalk. Girlfriend was equal parts fierce and feline. In fact, many show-goers mistakenly tweeted that Kloss closed the show but (fact check) she was actually the second last girl to walk. Way to steal the show, KK.
