Street Style, New York: Fashion Week begins! 35 photos of cold weather-proof style outside the Fall 2014 tents
Photography by Stefania Yarhi Let the games begin! No, we’re not talking about the Olympics: yesterday officially marked the opening of New York Fashion Week Fall 2014, aka the beginning of Fashion Month. It’s basically a four-week-long endurance test for the fashionable jet set—those of the faint of heart need not apply.
The Thursday shows included many up-and-coming designers, like Marissa Webb and Todd Snyder, as well as more established brands, such as BCBGMax Azria and Coach. Outside the tents in New York, our street style photographer Stefania Yarhi captured fashion show go-ers were bundled up against the elements with statement coats and attention grabbing accessories. With the big-ticket shows still to come, fashion’s big guns—think Anna Wintour and Miroslava Duma—weren’t spotted on the snow-covered streets. However, Gwyneth Paltrow’s new BFF, Taylor Tomasi Hill, was more than happy to brave the cold—her signature flaming-red hair likely helping to keep her warm.

See the biggest Spring 2014 fashion trends »
See all our fashion month coverage »With the end of fashion week in Toronto marking the close of Spring 2014 show season, it’s time we looked back at all the trends that emerged. As much as the runway sets the pace for what’s to come for the top Spring 2014 trends, the streets play a major role as show-going trendsetters give us the relatable breakdown of how to wear what’s hot next season. Prints take two spots on our top Spring 2014 trends list through those with a painterly quality and those influenced by international cultures. At Hérmes, Rousseau-inspired water lily florals were printed on luxurious fabrics while at Diane Von Furstenberg, dresses and skirts depicting an African wilderness roared. As for fashionable time travel, prepare to keep reminiscing about the youthful 1990s, which haven’t ceased to get reincarnated season after season. For the Rodarte Spring 2014 collection, the Mulleavy sisters reflected upon their own past. Their collection was inspired by their shared childhood in Los Angeles and models were decked out in looks fit for any wild child of the ’80s. Makeup artist James Kaliardos, working with Nars, created a look that played upon the graphic aesthetic of Hollywood circa 1980. He sculpted the models’ features with matte bronzers and made their eyes pop with a sharp black and white cat eye shape. It’s a totally wearable look for spring and easy for even makeup beginners to do.

Street Style, New York: 17 photos of Leandra Medine, Anna Dello Russo and more on the final day of Spring 2014 shows
Photography by Stefania Yarhi New York Fashion Week has officially wrapped up with top-tiered shows by Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs finishing the week off on a stylish note. But before everyone flies off to the other side of the Atlantic, let’s have one last look at New York street style’s finest, captured by our photographer Stefania Yarhi.
With yesterday’s weather still relatively warm, many of the ladies took full advantage and bared some skin on the last day of NYFW. Possibly influenced by the minimalist looks on the runways, our favourite Russian beaut Miroslava Duma—whose outfits never fail to disappoint—wowed in a two-tone sleeveless calf-length dress. Leandra Medine also exposed her legs in a pair of high-waist shorts and high-heeled Balenciaga oxfords, but it was Anna Dello Russo (of course!) who caught everyone’s attention in a white mini dress and a pair of Céline furry neon-yellow pumps. Also killing it with the accessories was one stunning blonde who strutted the streets like nobody’s business in a black sheer laced dress and a lust-worthy “Cool” Lanvin necklace.

New York Fashion Week backstage beauty: 57 pictures of the best manicures and nail art from the Spring 2014 shows
See the Spring 2014 nail art looks up close »
The nails at New York Fashion Week were right in tune with the ’90s minimalism style we saw on the Spring 2014 runways. Sheer is in, colour is out and the nail art trend seems to be winding down. The bare and buffed nails of last spring are still going strong for 2014, with designers like Altuzarra, Alexander Wang and Jeremy Laing opting for pale shades of pink, lavender or beige instead of punchy pastels and neon brights.

New York Fashion Week: Ralph joins the mod squad, Calvin shows minimalism and Marc dreams of the 1890s for Spring 2014

That’s a wrap! It’s been a whirlwind week of over 350 shows, front row gossip and a whole lot of crop tops (both on and off the runway) but somehow we survived to blog another day. Day 8 of New York Fashion Week saw three of the city’s designer kings take the stage: Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs. Three names that are synonymous with American design and three very different collections.
Ralph Lauren celebrated ’60s mod with a suite of mostly black and white looks featuring the era’s signature simple shift dresses, knee high socks, contrast collars and menswear inspiration. Streamlined silhouettes were pumped up with mix and match prints of black and white florals, plaids, stripes and checks. Next came an army of Crayola solids: a zingy green skirt suit, a neon orange coat, a red mock neck paired with red trousers and the show stopper: a cobalt blue strapless gown sported by Karlie Kloss.

New York Fashion Week backstage beauty: Denim-blue “homemade glam” eyes at Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring 2014
Photography by Peter Stigter “You’ll have to stretch this into a story,” said makeup artist Dick Page by way of explaining the extremely simple beauty look he created for Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring 2014. But simple in this case didn’t mean neutral or natural; it meant one big swoop (Page called it a “half-moon”) of bright blue shadow, a blend of Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Color in “Ice” and a blue powder shadow from Shiseido’s limited edition Eye Color Bar. And that was it: no cheek, no lip, no brow. “She’s lazy or high or both. It’s kind of like, homemade glam.”
The hair also shared that languid, DIY feeling. Guido Palau for Redken gave the models a grungy, but natural look. He used a barrel iron to give super-straight hair a nice bend at the neck and some movement at the ends, and worked in Redken Diamond Oil near the roots to give it a lanky quality. “It’s a little rock and roll, but not in a beachy way, more in a nighttime way. The flatness to the head and off-centeredness are the keys to the look.”

With the scorching weather, everybody was happy to peel off layers and embrace the heat with summer dresses. While Miroslava Duma and Olivia Palermo showed off their toned legs in printed ensembles, a few fashion show regulars took cues from the Spring 2014 runway by pulling out pleated skirts and sheer fabrics.
