See the trend on the runway!
See our Style Panel try the trend »Size matters for Fall 2012; volume has been turned up and proportions maximized. Boxier silhouettes, broad shoulders, and architectural layers come together to create striking visuals in our October issue.
On the runways, we saw Comme Des Garçons create a whole new body shape (think: human gingerbread man), Mugler restructured the peplum to add some renewed intrigue to the trend, and Pheobe Philo for chose to supersize her collection for Celine with coats of epic proportions.

What’s in your bag, Glee actress Naya Rivera?
Photography by Farzin Ghayour You better get excited, because today’s bag snoop subject is major! Majorly major. Presenting the Alexander Wang box bag (and its contents) belonging to Naya Rivera, one of the über talented stars of Glee! As the queen bee of the cheerleaders, Rivera’s character Santana Lopez doesn’t always display the…kindest tendencies, but judging by the reason she visited Toronto yesterday, Rivera IRL couldn’t be more different if she tried. In town to support the Sunshine Foundation, which in partnership with Winners and Homesense makes dreams come true for children with severe physical disabilities and life-threatening illnesses, the actress was meeting with a little girl who’s dream it was to meet her. “She loves the show and I thought what better way than to just come over and say hello,” said Rivera.

Get the Look: 10 stunning lacy picks à la Stella McCartney that will take you from summer to fall for under $150
Photography by Gregg DeGuire/WireImage It’s that time of year again—fall fashion has started to hit store shelves, but 30-degree days are way too hot for flannel and faux fur. To all you style mavens who have found yourself in fashion purgatory, fear not, the lace trend takes you from summer to fall with style to spare. This weekend, Jaime King and Emmy Rossum rocked the lacy trend at the 2012 Television Critics Association’s Summer Party. King paired her Stella McCartney Fall 2012 ensemble with Kate Spade accessories, and Rossum went sophisticate in a Zuhair Murad sheath. Both actresses showed lots of summer-appropriate bronzed skin, but the embellished frocks hit all the right fall style notes. We’d throw a blazer on top of Rossum’s ladylike dress, and pair King’s above-the-knee number with opaque tights and killer ankle boots to accommodate those cooler Canadian temperatures.

Our favourite royal was out and about this morning, visiting the National Portrait Gallery for the opening of an Olympic-themed photography exhibit. (A perfect event, considering that Kate’s both a patron of the gallery and an Olympic ambassador.)

Olympic fever! See what some of the international teams will be wearing to the London 2012 games
The London 2012 Olympics are fast approaching, and countries around the world have unveiled their team uniforms. This year, a handful of buzz-worthy designers were tapped to create sporty looks, including Stella McCartney for Great Britain, Giorgio Armani for Italy and Ralph Lauren for the United States. McCartney’s collection—which used a blue and white themed flag—was received with tepid enthusiasm from the Brits, who felt the omission of the red crosses was a poor design choice. Another disappointment was Ralph Lauren’s retro-Americana inspired uniforms, which were a little too school marmy for our taste and were actually produced overseas, rather than on home turf. Surprisingly, the standouts were the underdogs, who didn’t rely on fashion powerhouses to produce great uniforms. We loved France’s collection, which channeled Parisian-cool with chic black and white uniforms designed by Adidas, as well as Jamaica’s kit, which was playful, colourful, sporty and appropriately designed by Bob Marley’s daughter, Cedella Marley. While Team Canada’s official garbs are yet to be released (a replica collection is already flying off shelves at the Bay), we take a look at some of our favourite worldwide competitors.

The shining: How gleaming metallics and the like are lighting up both art and fashion
By Betty Ann Jordan
The art world—much like the fashion world—loves to redefine colour every chance it gets. Recently, a new batch of materials and technologies has enabled artists and designers to work with exquisite light-infused hues, ranging from peek-a-boo prismatics to sizzling minerals and gleaming metallics.
Iridescence, for example, can be seen in both cutting-edge exhibits and the latest fashion collections. A visual property of mother-of-pearl and moonstones, oil slicks, alloys and minerals, iridescence occurs when light plays over micro-grooved surfaces and separates into prismatic colours. For a visual cue, see photos of Carey Mulligan at this year’s Met Ball: her scaled Prada halter dress, made entirely of metal paillettes, reflected a different spectrum of hues in nearly every red carpet shot.
