TIFF 2015 party lessons: All celebrities are BFFAEAEAE
The thing you notice most when you’re in a room with a bunch of celebs is that they all invariably know each other. And it’s not in an “I love your work” sort of way. It’s like a BFFAEAE way. At last night’s Hollywood Foreign Press/Instyle party sponsored by Max Mara, there were too many […]

The best looks from last night’s TIFF red carpets (plus Naomi, Susan and Elle give new meaning to #SquadGoals)
Just when we’d vowed to never say the term “squad goals” again, Elle Fanning, Susan Sarandon and Naomi Watts had to go and light up the TIFF 2015 red carpet at the premiere of their film, About Ray. While Fanning went for a black and white tiered Emilio Pucci gown, her counterparts opted for a […]

TIFF 2015 celebrity beauty: All the looks we’d love to see on the red carpet this year
It’s the most wonderful time of the year (for Torontonians…)! TIFF 2015 is mere days away and we can’t wait to rub elbows with our favourite celebs (and keep an eye out for them at every Starbucks we walk into for the next couple weeks). Of course, we’ll be covering all of our favourite A-list […]

TIFF 2013: Fassbender gossip! Plus 23 shots of Olivia Wilde, Dakota Fanning and more at the Variety Studio at Holt Renfrew
See all the pictures from the Variety Studio at Holt Renfrew »
Critics were rendered speechless at Friday night’s premiere of 12 Years a Slave—and at the Variety Studio yesterday at Holt Renfrew, the same thing happened to us when Michael Fassbender, one of the film’s stars, entered the room along with director Steve McQueen and a few members of the cast. Wearing a black shawl collar sweater and dark jeans, Fassy (as we’re in the habit of calling him) sent our fangirl hearts racing in delight as we shrieked inside, trying to process that we were breathing in the same air as him. Also, dude has like the tiniest waist ever.
While waiting to be interviewed, we watched as Fassbender made a beeline for a tray of strawberries. Despite making a sour facial reaction, he gave the berry a thumbs up. No, like literally a thumbs up. Annnnd we’re officially jealous of fruit. Then he tilted back a glass of Moët, chatting with co-star Alfre Woodard and laughing at something she said before posing for a photo with her. Meanwhile the film’s lead, Chiwetel Ejiofor, sidled up to the British Airways bar and had a cup of something hot—hopefully having to say thank you to everyone complimenting his much-buzzed-about performance hasn’t made him lose his voice.

TIFF 2013: Inside Friday night’s Grey Goose Soho House parties with Daniel Radcliffe, Zac Efron and more!
See the photos from Grey Goose Soho House »
Adolescent fantasy worlds nearly collided last night when Daniel Radcliffe aka Mr. Harry Potter himself and High School Musical’s Zac Efron attended back-to-back TIFF 2013 parties at Grey Goose Soho House. Radcliffe was there first to celebrate Horns, his Kafka-esque new film about a young man who starts growing horns after his girlfriend’s death; earlier in the day the star hammed it up on the red carpet in a devil headband. Grey Goose cocktails with festival-ready names like Torontini were passed around as Radcliffe and his beautiful blonde co-star Juno Temple posed for chummy photos by the fireplace before heading out into the night.
Efron arrived shortly after, looking dapper as ever in a slim-cut grey suit. The Disney heartthrob held court on a plush leather sofa in one corner with his Parkland co-stars Tom Welling, Paul Giamatti and Colin Hanks, the spitting image of his father Tom (seriously, it was like watching Big). It was clearly boys’ night out as the posse chatted and chowed down on quinoa salad together. Hanks was easiest to spot as he worked the room, basically towering over his costars who, like most actors, were all much smaller in real life.

TIFF 2013: Inside the Last of Robin Hood pre-party with Susan Sarandon, Kevin Kline and Moët

The champagne was flowing at last night’s party for The Last of Robin Hood. Before the cast arrived (A-listers Susan Sarandon, Kevin Kline and Dakota Fanning were all confirmed to attend), a select group of guests indulged in Moët & Chandon from golden, oversized goblets while taking in a stunning sunset view of Toronto’s skyline from the rooftop of the glitzy Park Hyatt hotel in Yorkville (does it get any better than that?). We chatted with Elaine Lui aka. Lainey Gossip and got the lowdown on her new show, The Social, what she’ll be wearing during TIFF and her trendy new accessory, a flavoured e-cigarette (they’ve been seen all over New York Fashion Week).

TFW diary: Everything was embellished (and then some) at Lucian Matis
View the runway photo gallery »
View the backstage beauty gallery »Last night’s social schedule was jam-packed. Puddle jumping from Tiffany & Co.’s Lambertson Truex leather collab fete to the new Joe Fresh store opening at Queen and Portland (sadly missing the SPiN ping-pong club opening with investor and celeb guest Susan Sarandon—so many parties, so little time), we caught up with the fashion crowd for the second night of this pre-fashion week. Last on the list was Lucian Matis. Despite the rain, 99 Gallery was packed and the standing crowd was elbowing for a prime spot. The designer stood by his signature embellished aesthetic, decorating everything from watercolour nails to over-the-top drop earrings and copper paillette–encrusted bodysuits. Matis’s skill lies in stretching his technical muscles, employing those abilities to further his creative vision, resulting in bright woven bodices, tufted tulle, and sheer panels. Sometimes it worked, and sometimes it had us flashing back to last week’s episode of My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. With an awe-inspired audience, however, he’s clearly garnered a devoted following on the Canadian scene.

Workout: 6 tips for an added twist
Can’t face another blah session on the elliptical? From trapeze to monkey movements, we offer six ways to spice up your routine.
1. TAKE IT TO THE ZOO
Spend an hour at Aeküus in Montreal (aekuus.com) and your body will have a light-bulb moment. You’ll find yourself bounding from one corner to the next like a monkey, with one hand on the ground and the other overhead, or crawling inches from the floor like Spider-Man scaling a building. The exercises originate from basic calisthenics and expand into endless variations, many of which are animal-inspired quadrupedal motions. You’ll start with posture, breathing and fundamental movements (walking, falling, sitting), then increase the intensity and incorporate elements such as martial arts, J-Kae band work and jump rope. “After a year and a half with us, you’re basically capable of training by yourself,” says co-founder Julien Karl. Demonstrating an advanced technique, he grabs the outer edge of a staircase, each hand on a different step, and lifts his legs parallel to the floor. Sold.
