Afternoon beauty fix: Breakout on your back? Don’t fret!
I have a mild breakout on my shoulder, but I was planning on wearing a strapless dress to an upcoming cocktail party. Help!
Treating breakouts on your body requires different products than you’d regularly use on your face because the skin on your shoulders and back is thicker and therefore more difficult for products to penetrate. Reach into your shower and grab hold of your loofah—then throw it out! -
Afternoon beauty fix: Exploring your pores and how to cure those pesky clogs
My skin is consistently losing a battle against blackheads and whiteheads. Should I be treating each differently—and more importantly, how can I make them disappear? Both blackheads and whiteheads are the result of your skin producing the same thing: sebum (a fancy word for the waxy oil created by your sebaceous glands). It’s how the […]

Afternoon beauty fix: A simple treatment for shoulder acne
I have acne on my shoulders. Do I need to stop carrying a purse, or is there some sort of treatment to make it go away? Body breakouts are more common than not, and our guess is that you would rather treat them than trade in shoulder bags for a wardrobe full of cargo pants, […]

LFW diary: Kristen Stewart and Kate Moss at Mulberry, plus the scoop on Peter Jensen, Topshop, Acne, and Tom Ford
Ice cream, pink lemonade, and nearly 2,000 balloon animals aren’t typical ways to start a Sunday morning—but then we only get to start our day off with a Mulberry fashion show but twice a year. This show is always a big ticket of LFW, for its prime guest list (um, today’s show included Kristen Stewart AND Kate Moss, who wore a Canadian tuxedo and a brown hat!), super-luxe venue (the upscale Claridges Hotel in the tony Mayfair neighbourhood), dogs on the runway (this season: miniature schnauzers), and, obviously, the fact that the brand is one of the fastest-growing luxury brands out there. Another way to start the day: sequins, and yet another sorbet palette of yellow, green, and pink.

Afternoon beauty fix: Effective acne treatment that won’t break the bank
My skin is oily and acne prone, but I can’t afford specialty treatments. Can you recommend some anti-acne products that won’t break the bank? A balanced diet (to the best of your ability) and a weekly wash of your pillow cases will help, and so will your commitment to a consistent skin-care system. We like […]

FASHION plates: Patti Smith
By Randi Bergman and Jordan Porter
In the world of icons, it truly doesn’t get any better than Patti Smith. We’d confess our undying devotion to the singer’s lyrics, voice, style, heart, poems and just about anything else she is responsible for (and let us tell you, there’s a lot). The recently released book of never-before-seen images, Patti Smith 1969-1976 by Judy Linn, breathes new life into her everlasting stylistic impact by showing her just before she hit the big time. We channeled Smith’s impact in the best way we know how, shopping in the name of!

LFW diary: Fantastic Mr. Fox inspires at Mulberry
It was a six-minute ride from the Mayfair Hotel to the Mulberry show this morning, and yet when I arrived, I found myself in some enchanted woods. Flowering vines caught in my hair, which perhaps I should’ve brushed. The red and white speckled mushrooms indigenous to all Disney movies—you know the ones—popped up under my feet. Bright-eyed, bushy-tailed waiters offered cupcakes decorated to match.

Fashion news: Robin Kay speaks out about the Holts FWeek breakfast [updated], Canadians are safe shoppers and Shu Uemura to cease U.S. operations
Allegations made by models of Terry Richardson‘s inappropriate behaviour haven’t seemed to effect his career or his reputation, as the photographer was back to work, shooting model Doutzen Kroes for Vogue in Miami yesterday. [Vogue UK]
FDCC prez Robin Kay spoke out at yesterday’s Holt Renfrew‘s media breakfast, which showcased work from five Canadian designers who don’t show at LG Fashion Week. (Watch for our coverage of the event later today.) Holts brought in Vogue writer Mark Holgate, who will not be attending the main event at the Allstream Centre [UPDATE: Mark Holgate attended the IZMA show on Sunday night with Holt Renfrew’s communications director, Moira Wright.] Kay told the Toronto Star: “Holt Renfrew is a sponsor – with their largesse they should have made a point of bringing that gentleman to the site to see that we are a fashion week and to see designers he may not have heard of. That’s a sponsor’s duty and responsibility.” For Holts’ part, their fashion VP Barbara Atkin said: ““[Bringing these designers to fashion week] is something we’ve talked about and we are in discussions about.” [Toronto Star, via Toronto Life]
With J.Crew scouting locations and Victoria’s Secret‘s plans to open four north-of-the-49th stores, Canada has become the ‘it’ place for retailers looking to open international stores–because we’re nearby and not that exotic, apparently. Says the Wall Street Journal: “Canadians tend to be slower, steadier shoppers than Americans, with a preference for higher-quality goods and more interest in outdoor looks.” Gotta love the stereotypes, eh. Jonny Johansson, the founder of Acne, has said he would like his label to be recognized for more than their slim fitting jeans. The brand is also home to a full clothing line as well as a magazine Johansson started called Acne Paper. This collective began with Johansson’s past dabbling in furniture design, music and fashion—with the full name of Ambition to Create Novel Expressions an indicator of the far-reaching creative abilities of the man behind the jeans company. A collaboration with Alber Elbaz has taken Acne into a luxury standard and higher price point—giving the company its much-deserved appreciation in the design community and building its rep.
