Goodbye LBD because this summer it is all about the LWD. With the 66th Cannes Film Festival still going strong, we’ve noticed many leading ladies opting to wear white on the red carpet. Jessica Chastain, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Biel have all been wearing white throughout the festival—the way the colour complements the beautiful French Riviera setting could of course, be a strong reason why it’s been so popular. Most recently, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Marion Cotillard caught our eye, with both working variations of the little white dress on the Cannes red carpet. It’s certainly made the LWD a must-have on our summer shopping list.

Supporter of the cause and one of the top models for The Ultimate Gold Collection fashion show, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley arrived at this year’s amfAR Gala looking glamorous in the most effortless way possible. Wearing Dior, the white crepe strapless dress consists of an off-white and pink-print silk and satin skirt. She accessorized with a pair of crisp white pointed-toe Christian Louboutin heels and completed her look with smoky eyes and loose, wavy hair.

The 66th annual Cannes Film Festival is underway and the never-ending parade of red carpet dresses certainly makes it one of the top sartorial events of the year. As a twelve-day film festival that hosts multiple parties, photo calls and premieres each day, A-list stars and international icons bringing their best looks to the French Riviera. To help keep track, we’re rounding up the top looks from the Cannes 2013 red carpet so far—and we’ll keep adding more as the festival continues.

Arguably the most anticipated movie of the year, The Great Gatsby, had its European premiere at Cannes last week—and the red carpet was filled with outfits just as glamourous as the film itself, including Cara Delevingne’s sultry Burberry laced ensemble and Carey Mulligan’s Dior Couture gown.

Meanwhile, Emma Watson turned heads last week at the premiere of her latest film, The Bling Ring, in a stunning Chanel gown. Earlier in the day, the wizard-turned-fame-obsessed-teen (that is, on screen!) showed off an equally stunning burgundy ensemble by Christopher Kane.

Judged either by the vulgar mathematics of marketing or by higher, more refined artistic standards, fashion exhibitions are flourishing. Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, a show that ran at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2011, attracted 661,509 visitors, making it one of the 10 most popular attractions in the Met’s 143-year history, right up there with the Treasures of Tutankhamun and the Mona Lisa.

Besides scoring big numbers, the show also ranked high on a scale of aesthetic satisfaction. “It was really about an artist who spoke very emotionally through his work,” says Valerie Steele, director of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan, who saw it three times and speaks of it as “the most extraordinary fashion exhibition I’ve seen.”

In 2013, the exhibition boom continues. Steele and her curatorial team tackle an explosive subject with Queer Style, opening at FIT next September. The first major show to explore the gay influence on fashion, it’s been a long time coming, but its arrival this year seems thrillingly on-trend, 2013 having got rolling with an inaugural address in which U.S. President Obama gave a shout-out to Stonewall and a showing of Chanel haute couture that concluded with lesbian brides.

And transgressive seems to be trending. Costumes worn by rock music’s great gender bender are featured in David Bowie is, an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London (March 23 to July 28).

It’s been a couple of months since the last big red carpet event and let’s face it: what is fashion without the red carpet? Since May is just around the corner, this only means the biggest fashion event of the year, the annual Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala in New York. This year’s exhibit, PUNK: Chaos to Couture, will feature around designs for both men and women focusing on the evolution of punk’s influence in the world of fashion since the birth of its movement in the 1970s to its present day.

With punk theme as the focus, who better than to have punk’s latest muse, actress Rooney Mara, and Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci as this year’s co-chairs alongside Anna Wintour and Moda Operandi’s Lauren Santo Domingo? Not usually associated with punk, Beyonce was named Honourary Chair of the event as if her show-stopping Givenchy dress at last year’s MET Gala was not enough of a reason to be given this honour.

Paris reigns everlasting as the monarch of style, elegance and tradition, but she also ranks high for innovation and sartorial experimentation. Because of this rare gift, the City of Light continues to be a magnet for a motley crew of bloggers, eccentric journalists and international admirers (oft times known as shoppers) who make the fashion pilgrimage twice a year to bask in her glow. Designers at the top of their game have dazzled us once again. After Chanel’s global statement, Jean Paul Gaultier’s punk parade and Alexander Wang’s debut at Balenciaga, here are three of our most magical moments from Paris Fashion Week Fall 2013.

Despite being set in a dystopian future, style inspiration for the highly anticipated second Hunger Games film The Hunger Games: Catching Fire seems to be rooted in the futuristic fashions of today. In a series of stills gradually being released by the studio, Jennifer Lawrence and Elizabeth Banks are shown wearing looks that appear to be inspired by the Fall 2012 collections of Alexander McQueen and Christopher Kane.

The Telegraph has confirmed that brand representatives from Alexander McQueen are denying that any dresses were custom-made for the movie, but the style inspiration is unmistakable. In one image Banks, who plays the uptight Effie Trinket, wears a standout look with red ruffles that fits right in with Sarah Burton’s Fall 2012 Alexander McQueen collection. Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence also dons a McQueen-esque look in a promotional image which shows Katniss Everdeen looking as regal as a queen. The Telegraph shares another image that has Katniss on stage with co-winner of the Hunger Games and potential love interest Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) wearing a sleek dress with Christopher Kane’s signature moiré pattern from his Fall 2012 collection.

2013’s red carpet train continued last night, with the best and brightest Hollywood stars making a stop at the 19^th annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards. And as that train quickens its pace, we’re seeing many of the same trends featured at the Golden Globes shining through once again.

Continuing with the strapless red dress trend that was so popular at the Golden Globes, Jessica Chastain matched her ginger locks with a bright red fitted Alexander McQueen gown with wrapped sweetheart neckline. In the white corner, Sofia Vergara and Naomi Watts wowed in Donna Karen Atelier and Marchesa respectively. Shining the brightest though, was Kerry Washington in an incredible white strapless Rodarte gown with silver lace and embroidery.

Michelle Dockery wore a black vintage Chado Ralph Rucci dress that caused excitement with sheer panels that revealed a bit of side boob. New mom Claire Danes once again flaunted her post-baby figure in a black one shouldered Givenchy gown that featured a thigh high slit with a graphic black and white design highlighting the slit.

Fitted silhouettes were also a big trend at the SAG Awards, with Amanda Seyfried and Jennifer Garner at opposite ends of the colour spectrum—Seyfried in navy blue Zac Posen and Garner in gold Oscar de la Renta.

Jennifer Lawrence followed suit in a strapless navy Dior Haute Couture gown that she looked gorgeous in despite battling walking pneumonia (and despite the rip or maybe a slip that could be heard around the world).

Emily Schuman’s blog, Cupcakes and Cashmere, is true to its title: her posts are comforting (like delicious dinner party recipes), friendly (so many style and decor tips!) and full of sparkle and shine. In real life, Emily Shuman is just as poised as the content she posts—which is likely one of the reasons she’s been able to turn her blog into a full-time career. While Cupcakes and Cashmere is based out of Los Angeles, Schuman was recently in Toronto to promote her first book, which is an extension of the blog. Holt Renfrew hosted a Cupcakes and Cashmere book signing celebration and we got the chance to sneak a peek inside Schuman’s Prada purse. While there were no cupcakes inside, we did find a macaroon-shaped container, a pair of Chanel ballet flats and a perfect assortment of pink items. Ready to explore? Read on!

Last night’s 70th annual Golden Globe Awards was a pretty epic lesson in red carpet trends. From the bright colours to the mermaid tails to the boob shows, the A-list all seemed to have consulted with each other’s stylists before arriving at the event. Red rose to the top of the colour charts, making bright appearances on Golden Globe winner Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture, Zooey Deschanel in Oscar de la Renta and Claire Danes in Versace. Richer shades were worn by Naomi Watts in Zac Posen, Taylor Swift in Donna Karan Atelier and Lena Dunham in Zac Posen (the verdict’s still out on Dunham’s dress, though we really don’t like to speak negatively about such a precious human).

Pastels also seemed a strong message on the red carpet, with every hue in the candy coated rainbow being tested against the natural beauty of the night’s various stars. Jessica Alba‘s signature bronzed glow was offset by her creamsicle orange Oscar de la Renta trumpet gown. Meanwhile, Golden Globe winner Jessica Chastain chose the most ideal aquamarine on the colour wheel for her Calvin Klein gown. Bravo!

On the flip side, stark black and white (and even a combo of both with Julianne Moore’s graphic black and white Tom Ford column dress) predictably showed up en masse on stars like Anne Hathaway in beaded white Chanel, Amanda Seyfried in stunning white Givenchy and Kate Hudson and Nicole Kidman, who were both clear standouts in statement-making black Alexander McQueen dresses.

And the mermaid tails, oh those mermaid tails. Thought they were retired? Think again. The ole pyramid hem is proving to be on a clear comeback, as worn by Amy Adams, Jennifer Lopez, Taylor Swift and Jessica Alba.

As for the aforementioned boob-show, one flip through out Golden Globe red carpet gallery would show quite the bountiful selection. And really, is there much wrong with that?

Last week Sarah Burton said she would like to create custom maternity wear pieces for Kate Middleton and, low and behold, last night the Duchess made her first official post-pregnancy-announcement appearance in an Alexander McQueen gown. Though to be completely fair, there was barely a baby bump to be seen, making the dress less maternity wear and more custom order. The bell-sleeve gown—which featured peplum detailing and a flattering thigh-high slit—was a stunning shade of emerald green, chosen by Kate herself. (It was originally designed in black.) Meaning that not even extreme sickness can keep Kate Middleton from being on trend: Emerald is, after all, Pantone’s just-announced Colour of the Year for 2013.

Yesterday, an extremely pregnant—seven months to be exact—Sarah Burton was made an Officer of the British Empire for her contributions to British Fashion or as we’d like to think, for designing the wedding dress of Kate Middleton.

Burton’s designs for Alexander McQueen have become a go-to for the Duchess of Cambridge and right before Kate’s pregnancy announcement, she was spotted in a custom made McQueen coat while playing field hockey—an unofficial pregnancy look.
