True Blood’s Anna Paquin on art collecting, family plans and playing Sookie—plus her shopping picks for summer

Read our interview with Anna Paquin »
See Anna Paquin’s shopping picks »You can learn a lot about an actress by the way she steps on set for a photo shoot. Some stars require the armour of an entourage; others need a personality-devoid space and monastic silence. Anna Paquin is unquestionably neither of the above. Upon arriving at L.A.’s Smashbox Studios on a scalding Saturday afternoon, the Winnipeg-born, New Zealand-raised actress introduces herself to the FASHION crew without hesitation. Serving up a warm, Kiwi-accented “Nice to meet you” to photographer James White—and his troop of all-guy assistants crushing on her—the 29-year-old talent does the rounds as if she were hosting a cocktail party. Of course, there is a reason for Paquin’s accelerated social skills. Having won an Oscar at the age of 11 for her performance in Jane Campion’s The Piano, Paquin has grown up with cameras and handshakes at every corner, starring in a mix of family pictures (Fly Away Home), blockbusters (X-Men), indie flicks (The Squid and the Whale) and, most recently, a ratings monster of a TV series called True Blood.
After changing into her favoured cover look—a Jackie Onassis-like Marc Jacobs dress trimmed with silver studs—Paquin dashes in front of the lens, occasionally cracking jokes and posing without any forced fabulousness. Her good humour remains intact long after the array of designer heels and baubles are put away and we are left alone to talk.

MEN’S FASHION: We talk fashion and fragrance with Justin Timberlake
By James Grainger
All the world may be a stage, but there are few players with as much panache and multi-genre presence as Justin Timberlake. Actor, musician, fashion insider (with his William Rast line) and Saturday Night Live favourite, Timberlake’s most endearing role may be that of good sport. Aptly, the 31-year-old is the face of Givenchy’s Play fragrance portfolio, which grows this spring with the introduction of the woody, gingery Play Sport.
What makes a good fragrance?
“A scent shouldn’t be like an attack. It’s weird how a strong fragrance homogenizes personality instead of adding to it. [Play Sport] was attractive to me because it was clean, fresh and unobtrusive. When you get close up, that’s when you should notice a scent.” -

We’ve got the scoop on Madonna’s new fragrance TV ad and what she did while filming it
Want to smell like Madonna’s mom? Well, you’re in luck! The star’s first fragrance (can you believe it?) is titled Truth or Dare and was inspired by her early memories of her mother. It’s an updated take on a white “narcotic” floral scent, featuring notes of woods and vanilla. Sounds delish. The fragrance hits stores […]

Update: Andrej Pejic confirmed as the new face of Jean Paul Gaultier’s men’s fragrance
When we reported that Andrej Pejic was in talks to star in a fragrance campaign, we had an inkling that the pouty-lipped wonder would be matched up with Jean Paul Gaultier. As it turns out, we were right on the money. WWD has confirmed that Pejic will be the face of Gaultier’s men’s fragrance Korkorico (that’s French for cock-a-doodle-doo, folks).

They said/We said: Olivia Palermo has gone from reality TV star to the face of Rochas’ newest fragrance
Photography by Marcel Thomas/Getty Images Proving once again that dimples and a good sense of style can take you places, Olivia Palermo has just been declared the face of Rochas’ newest fragrance.
The pairing is an understandable one considering the similarities between Rochas’ signature refined elegance and Palermo’s own, ahem, “elevated” aesthetic (remember when she was forced to attend hosted a Guess party on The City but refused to wear Guess?). The house, with a well-known roster of perfumes, is letting nothing slip about the new scent—however all things considered, the face of a fragrance is more likely to influence a purchase than the scent itself.

Listen: Liv Tyler sings for Givenchy’s newest Very Irrésistible perfume
Liv Tyler has worked with Givenchy since 2003, but late last year it was announced that her role as spokesperson was evolving: she would be the voice of a new perfume. And when we say voice, we really mean it: Tyler recorded a cover of the INXS hit “Need You Tonight” as the official song of Givenchy’s forthcoming fragrance Very Irrésistible Givenchy Electric Rose. While the scent isn’t scheduled to hit counters until April, the song is ready for your listening pleasure. However, consider this a sneak peek—there’s a music video in the works and it’s sure to be a sensory overload!

Afternoon beauty fix: A few scents for sensitive skin
What’s the best perfume for sensitive skin? I’m typically reactive but don’t want to give up my love for fragrances!
Non-synthetic fragrances are not necessarily a new phenomenon, though they’re more difficult for perfumers to develop into a sophisticated scent, not to mention more expensive to experiment with. Selection has been limited in the past, but consumers’ recent distaste for chemicals—plus an increasing demand for deeply personal and unique auras—have helped give rise to natural, apothecary-style perfumes of late… and they’re awesome. -
Wanna smell like leather? (Or rare flowers?) Louis Vuitton to launch its first fragrance since the 1930s!
On Wednesday, Louis Vuitton announced the launch of a new fragrance—its first since the 1930s. The announcement comes after much speculation when, last October, WWD reported Vuitton had been investigating rare French flowers for use in a perfume. The nose behind it all will be none other than the renowned third-generation perfumer Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud, who […]
