Fashion week prep: A street style maven shares 3 inexpensive and vibrant outfit statements
Having traveled from Halifax to Toronto for the past three years to document up and coming fashion, beauty and street style trends for my site Lion Hunter, I’ve come to accept the madness of fashion week. This season, as an online editorial intern at FASHION, I get to experience fashion week differently, having already been in the city for a few months and working for the magazine. Each day will still bring worries of failing to squeeze in a quick bite between shows, publishing up to date content and finding a moment to rest before the next day rolls in. Thankfully, concern over my sartorial choices is the least of these.
My approach to figuring out outfits leads to a heap of gathered wares from my favourite thrift and vintage stores that I’ve slowly collected since the lights dimmed last season. Vintage trinkets and jewellery, a plethora of prints and dope heels that I will curse at the end of each day, are all under scrutiny. As a frugal shopper I’ve found ways to create street style worthy looks without making my bank account sweat. I put together possible looks out of that pile of goodness allowing myself to change them due to last minute thrift store finds or an inspired trade of pieces between outfits. The upside of taking in Toronto Fashion Week is a prior month worth of street style inspiration from New York, London, Paris and Milan to inspire a week’s worth of looks.
In the spirit of anything goes when dressing for fashion week, here are 3 inexpensive looks that are worthy of a little show and tell.

They said/We said: Prada’s CEO (aka. Miuccia’s husband) thinks counterfeit goods are not all that bad
After hearing all about the counterfeit lawsuit drama that has been going on lately, it’s almost a shock to the system to have someone say anything positive about the illegal industry. Most shocking of all is that the controversial comments are coming from Patrizio Bertelli, Prada’s CEO and Miuccia Prada’s husband.
Bertelli recently concluded a Bloomberg Television interview by saying the counterfeit industry really isn’t all that bad — in fact, it actually has some positive attributes.
“I always say counterfeits, we’re happier to have them than not have them. Don’t you think it’s sad for a brand that no one wants to copy them?” he said on air.
“Something else about counterfeits is that they provide a source of labor and income for lots of other people. So, maybe they’re not totally bad. So, in other words, we have a dual function. We want to penetrate the markets, we want to become successful and sell a lot in new markets. And we end up creating a lot of jobs and counterfeit factories, so that’s very good.”
Gucci, another famed Italian fashion house, evidently does not prescribe to Bertelli’s views that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, especially after their less-than-anticipated settlement with Guess over a counterfeit lawsuit battle (which we reported on earlier this week).
Bertelli did point out that Prada engages in lawsuits to protect their products, but that the fashion industry “doesn’t lend itself very well to patent protection” like high-tech industries do.
A spokesman for the fashion house seemed to try to do some damage control by telling WWD that Bertelli’s quotes were “part of an extended conversation that underscored how the market of counterfeits is an objective reality for successful brands.”
True enough — counterfeit products seem to be an inevitable reality of having “made it” in the fashion industry. But do Bertelli’s views oversimplify an industry that has its fair share of evils, not to mention the fact that it’s downright illegal?

Gucci wins legal battle against Guess to the tune of $4.7 million
After three long years of battling it out in court, the verdict in the case of Guess vs. Gucci is in: Guess has to pay up $4.7 million to the Italian luxury brand, following a copyright infringement civil suit that Guess was slapped with in 2009.
As we mentioned last month, the fight between the two Gs was a particularly arduous and dramatic one, complete with a feisty judge, tear-jerking testimonials and bitter words on both sides. Though Gucci ended up being the victor in the case, the $4.7 million that they’ll be receiving is a fraction of the $221 million settlement they’d originally demanded.
