From the food aisles to Fifth Avenue: Inside Joe Fresh’s New York flagship store and opening party
Last Thursday, the unthinkable happened: A brand born in the aisles of the grocery store became part of the glorious gloss of New York’s Fifth Avenue. But if you know anything about Joe Fresh and its founder Joe Mimran, you know that well, it’s not really that unthinkable at all. Since launching the brand five years ago (and after years of style-propagation via his previous ventures, Club Monaco and Caban), Mimran has brought affordable chicness to the forefront of the Canadian fashion industry. South of the border was the natural next step, and since the brand’s U.S. launch late last summer, its bright and sunny hues have been infiltrating the pages of Teen Vogue, New York Magazine and the like. To boot, the brand has been making its mark on the arts community as well, sponsoring an event during Miami’s Art Basel, and the New Museum’s second triennial exhibit, The Ungovernables.

Nail Corner: We do Effie’s over-the-top caviar manicure from The Hunger Games!
Aside from the excitement of the movie itself, obviously the best thing from The Hunger Games are the crazy manicures that Effie Trinket wears throughout. Unfortunately, only of a few are available to view close up (come on, Lions Gate Films, give fans a full gallery of nail art screen grabs!) but to our delight, one of the more intricate designs was shared by Elizabeth Banks—who of course, played the role of Effie. These Hunger Games nails include the soon-to-be-everywhere trend of caviar manicures—that is, manis with tiny beads that add playful texture—and thus, inspiration for this week’s Nail Corner was born!

America’s Next Top Model hits Toronto Fashion Week!
Apparently, we were sleeping for a few days last Toronto Fashion Week, because America’s Next Top Model came and went without us even blinking an eye! See all Toronto Fashion Week coverage »The Joe Fresh girl is always pretty, in a never-ambitious and always-achievable sort of way. After all, when your product is sold at grocery stores across the country, it’s best to avoid making a statement with a bleached eyebrow or dreadlocked hair. But that’s not to say Joe Fresh has to be completely vanilla: the beauty inspiration for their Fall 2012 show was Blow-Up, a sultry, swinging film from the ‘60s.

See all Toronto Fashion Week coverage »Joe Mimran opened his fall show—always among the most hyped and well-attended of Toronto Fashion Week—with a video of Veruschka seducing the camera in 1966’s Blowup, which set the scene for a colourful parade of swinging ’60s three-quarter-sleeve toppers, mini shift dresses, houndstooth prints large and small, and skinny capri pants on homegrown all star models such as Alana Zimmer, Heather Marks, Kate King, and our March issue cover girl, Anaïs Pouliot. Coats were tweedy or high-shine patent, often with faux fur additions so fuzzy, they might have been taken from a teddy. Oversized-cable knits looked cool with neon accents, prints, and patterns, and the finishing touches were jumbo tuques and pointy court pumps with neon orange soles. A flamboyant gent surprised Mimran with a huge bouquet of flowers as he was taking his bow—we concur, the brand deserves to celebrate.

Nail Corner: PFW edition! A colour-block manicure inspired by Céline
While the abundance of brightly dyed furs on almost every runway was tempting inspiration for Nail Corner, the colour blocking at Céline’s Fall 2012 presentation made for a much better manicure. Mixing horizontal and diagonal stripes, this design matches the asymmetrical pattern of an undeniably stunning Céline overcoat.
