We’re kvelling! Five-time FASHION cover girl Liisa Winkler kills it in the new Balenciaga ads
We’re kvelling over here. Belleville-born beauty and five-time FASHION cover girl Liisa Winkler has landed one of our favourite new campaigns: the Steven Meisel–photo’d Balenciaga Fall 2011 shots. Featuring Winkler alongside fellow model Julia Nobis swathed in the season’s angular colour-blocked pieces, the shots juxtapose the setting of the Gothic arches of a Harlem church with sterile black-and-white bathroom tiles. “I met with Nicolas in New York and he booked me ‘exclusive’ for his show in Paris. Soon after, I shot the campaign in New York with Steven,” says Winkler. “It was so nice to work with such a great team again. After being out of the industry for the past few years raising my kids, I feel more solid in my own skin and more able to fully appreciate and understand all the creative direction that goes into a shoot like this.”
To boot, she is also featured in the just-released behind-the-scenes video of the shoot filmed by model Karen Elson and is seen in many of the, like, zillion photos that are included on the relaunched Balenciaga website. You go, homegirl!

All hail McQueen: Last night’s dressed up tributes to the enfant terrible
While the Met’s Savage Beauty exhibit is filled with breathtaking pieces from the late Alexander McQueen, there’s nothing like seeing his creations in motion. While we’d certainly all know this to be true, there was a surprising lack of his dresses on the red carpet, save for a few winning entrances by Sarah Jessica Parker, Karen Elson, Gisele Bündchen and Vogue‘s Hamish Bowles. The inimitable Daphne Guinness didn’t disappoint either, not only dressing in one of the designer’s most fantastical creations, but also giving onlookers a chance to peep her very own collection as she got dressed in Barneys New York‘s store windows. Here, we give you our favourite tribs from last night’s ode to the late and great McQueen.

Fashion news: Justin Bieber nail polish; Kell on Earth comes to Canada; and did Karen Elson steal Christina Hendricks’ look?
Stefano Pilati, Karl Lagerfeld, Christophe Decarnin, Hedi Slimane, Alber Elbaz and Raf Simons have all been caught up in the rumour mill–again. According to a number of unnamed sources, Pilati is set to be replaced at YSL with either Slimane, Simons or Decarnin. The Kaiser is rumoured to retire from Chanel in 2012 (on his 30th anniversary with the brand) and will be replaced with Elbaz of Lanvin. And if the gossip is true Theyskens will be replacing Elbaz at Lanvin. [The Cut]

Christopher Bailey wins big and Karen Elson takes a fall at the British Fashion Awards
The British Fashion Awards were held in London last night. Christopher Bailey and Burberry were honoured twice: Bailey for British Designer of the Year and his label for Best Designer Brand. During his speech, Bailey announced that he would be showing the Prorsum collection in London again for the fall shows in February. While we were crossing our fingers for the Canadian talent on the nominees list–Mark Fast for emerging ready-to-wear talent and Todd Lynn for Best Menswear Designer–those awards went to Peter Pilotto and Kim Jones for Dunhill, respectively. (Don’t feel too bad for Fast–dressing Julia Restoin-Roitfeld on the red carpet was a win of another kind.)
