For as long as we can remember (and by that we mean since approximately 2010), the ombre has been hot. Ascending the ranks of typical two-year hair trend cycles, the ombre has proved perennial: it just keeps coming back. And although we can’t exactly pinpoint when and how the trend came to be (one too many missed trips to the hair salon could be a possibility), there is no doubt that many celebs have caught the ombre bug, including two of its earliest adopters, Jessica Alba and Nicole Richie. 

The classic ombre (think Sarah Jessica Parker) shows no signs of departing, but an edgy dark versus light a la Demi Lovato has become more and more popular in recent years. If standing out from the pack is your thing, Brit It girl, Poppy Delevingne works a reverse take on it that may be one of the best celebrity ombre hair looks we’ve seen. And then there is Kylie Jenner whose hairstyles may not be considered ombre per se, but the dip dye-like effect is definitely one chic version we know many fans will follow suit this season. The Golden Globes may be considered a red carpet test-run for the Oscars, but when it comes to beauty, it’s when A-listers tend to go all out. For the 2014 Golden Globes, it was all about bright lip colours and dramatic eye looks. The classic Old Hollywood red lip was ditched in favour of burnt shades of berry and orange. Jennifer Lawrence wore an almost-goth burgundy lip while Lupita Nyong’o added a metallic hit to her dark lipstick shade with a tinge of gold shimmer.

Of course, not everyone went dark: Both Zoe Saldana and Zooey Deschanel opted for a brighter take on the red carpet trend with perfect burnt orange-red pouts. Elisabeth Moss’s lipstick was a stand-out berry colour, just a few shades lighter than the purple hits in her shimmering J. Mendel gown—perhaps berry’s the official colour of award winners, as Cate Blanchette was also wearing it on her lips.

Short hair is still where it’s at, with above-the-shoulder styles being amongst the best beauty looks on the 2013 Emmy Awards red carpet. From Elisabeth Moss’s cropped platinum cut to Kate Mara’s striking pin-straight style to Claire Danes’ faux bob, the message was clear: to stand out in a sea of Old Hollywood side parts and loose updos, you have to go short.

Not willing to let Betty Draper have all the fun, Elisabeth Moss debuted her freshly-dyed blonde hair on the Emmys red carpet. Channeling a little bit of a Charlize Theron vibe, the tousled, modern style was a new look for Moss—and a fierce one at that. As for Mad Men’s other leading ladies, both January Jones and Christina Hendricks kept their short cuts curly.

New York Fashion Week has us pretty excited for next spring, especially considering that our many of our favourite trends (like the crop top and ‘90s minimalism) are still going strong. With bralettes, sheer skirts and floral-print maxi dresses all featured at yesterday’s Michael Kors Spring 2014 show, we’re officially ready to skip winter. While all eyes were on the runway, two actresses, Katie Holmes and Kate Mara, lit up the front row in outfits by America’s favourite billionaire designer.

As someone who’s usually seen running about town in basic pieces, Katie Holmes’ floral ensemble was a breath of fresh air. Wearing head-to-toe Michael Kors from the Pre-Fall 2013 collection, Holmes’ ensemble consisted of a leaf cashmere knit sweater and a rose-print midi-length skirt. Keeping her accessories simple (and all in neutral shades), she added a skinny belt to cinch her waist, carried a minimalist clutch and wore pointed-toe heels also from the same collection. Appearing relaxed, Holmes pulled her hair back in a sophisticated updo and kept her makeup neutral, allowing her natural beauty to shine.

Curly and wavy hairstyles are, without a doubt, one of our favourite red carpet looks. From perfectly coiffed Old Hollywood ringlets to messy beach waves, there are endless ways to wear your hair down—while still giving it some style. Curly hair is easier to master than an updo, looks much more dramatic than a ponytail and definitely has an appeal that straight hair just can’t match. Need further proof? Your mom will probably want to compare the movie Ten Year, about high school friends coming together for one night at their 10 year reunion, with movies like The Big Chill. And your older sister will probably compare it to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, but while the movie does have some similar themes against the backdrop of who-we-were-then-isn’t-who-we-are-now, what it has that these do not is the most genetically blessed graduating class ever assembled. Case in point, the cast-members who showed up at TIFF to promote the film: Channing Tatum, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Justin Long, Ari Graynor, Kate Mara, Brian Geraghty, Lynn Collins, Oscar Isaac, Kelly Noonan, and Scott Porter. There may have been more, but we ran out of fingers.

The tagline on next year’s Grey Goose Soho House invites should seriously read: “Four nights, four million celebs,” because it’s not normal how many are inside this place at one point on any given night. Last night, just as Madonna’s W.E. dinner was clearing out, we moseyed on over to catch a glimpse of our maker but, alas, she had slipped away. It quickly became apparent, though, that one Material Girl lost meant a million teenage heartthrobs gained. Or, should we say, a million teenage heartthrobs interacting with each other. In one corner, Adam Brody and Chace Crawford were chatting, most certainly trading notes about how to be a Josh Schwartz–moulded babe. In the next (or rather, upstairs), Justin Long and Michael Fassbender were busy at the ping-pong tables. As we mentioned earlier, Fassbender should probably stick to his day job, since his entire game consisted of running back and forth to catch his balls. (One landed near my foot. He touched it. And then apologized.) Channing Tatum was there somewhere too, but we didn’t spot him, or his dance moves. Back downstairs, Gerard Butler chatted with several, several ladies, one of who was Olivia Wilde in a body-hugging mega-sexy black dress. Peppered in among the youngsters, former heartthrobs (still, kinda?) Ralph Fiennes and Val Kilmer worked the room. They both have lots of hair at the moment.

Once again, the Grey Goose Soho House was home to just about every star you’d ever want to be home with last night, as the casts from Drive and A Dangerous Method celebrated their screenings. Who, pray tell, is all the hype about? Just Ryan Gosling, Keira Knightley, Alexander Skarsgård, Emily Blunt, Bono, George Clooney, Jon Hamm, Evan Rachel Wood, Anna Faris, Dave Matthews, Sarah Sadon, David Cronenberg, Jimmy Kimmel, Kate Mara, Emile Hirsch, Albert Brooks, and Brian Cranston is all.
