Mikael D backstage beauty: Deconstructed beehives and luminous skin dial up the romance for Fall 2014
As runway light bounced off intricate embroidery at the Mikael D Fall 2014 show, the skin gleamed just the same. M.A.C senior artist Jane McKay drew inspiration from the opulence of Baroque textures and designed a fresh-yet-glamorous look. Radiance was an important element in the makeup: “It’s all about the play of light bouncing off the skin,” said Ricky Boudreau, M.A.C cosmetics trainer, who led the team backstage.
Models’ skin was moisturized with Strobe Cream and kept lustrous with a light application of Mineralize Moisture Foundation and Concealer. Boudreau softly sculpted the cheeks with Sculpt Powder and added an additional hit of illumination with an iridescent loose powder—“Silver Dusk”—applied around the eye, from brow to cheekbone. Brows were simply groomed with Brow Set in “Clear.” Finally, eyelids were drenched in bronzed gold tones and intensified with a set of MAC #33 lashes and multiple coats of mascara. Boudreau pressed a layer of “Half & Half” lipstick into the lips with his fingers for a neutral pout.

Beauty Fix: A super easy way to remove glitter nail polish, a fresh fragrance for spring and more
Every week our Beauty Fix columnist takes on your questions about makeup, skincare, hair and more. Have a beauty question we haven’t answered? Email us at beautyfix@fashionmagazine.com.
I’ve read grainy exfoliators can tear my skin. Is this true?
Natural exfoliator ingredients such as ground nutshells, fruit pits or seeds can be uneven and they have the potential to be sharp or unrefined, which can irritate skin. If you’re concerned about this happening to your skin and chemical exfoliators aren’t your cup of tea, please direct your attention to Diptyque Radiance Boosting Powder ($62, at Holt Renfrew). A sponge sphere accompanies the bottle and I promise, it has purpose! Pour a half-teaspoon of powder (consisting of powdered rose, neroli and jasmine, as well as purifying white clay) into your moistened palms, add a bit of water to the sponge and start rolling the sponge around in your palm, working the powder into a lather. Apply this foamy mix to clean, damp skin in circular motions to gently exfoliate. And I do mean gentle—these are micro fine particles that create a subtle grit when foamed up. Skin is left with a radiant matte finish after being scrubbed, but it’s not stripped or damaged in any way. -

Introducing Gwen Stefani by OPI: From Swarovski nail art to a new mirror-finish polish, all the details on this collab
See all the Gwen Stefani by OPI nail polish shades »
When we think of Gwen Stefani’s signature style a few things come to mind: platinum hair, a midriff-baring top and, of course, red lips! Now, thanks to OPI, the musician’s covetable style is being bottled up for an exclusive nail polish collaboration. The seven-piece Gwen Stefani by OPI collection will hit shelves in January 2014 and features a number of finishes that are new to OPI, as well as a super-exclusive nail art set.
“Over & Over A-Gwen”—a luscious red that no doubt took inspiration from Stefani’s go-to lipstick shade—will be paired with Swarovski black crystals and metallic studs in a boxed set that’s sure to be on every nail art fan’s must-have list. (Even better, it will sell for less than $20!) As for the new polish finishes, “Push and Shove” may just rival the nail art in terms of flashiness. It’s a chrome polish with a mirror-like finish, but unlike other chrome polishes, “Push and Shove” requires a special base coat (named “Lay Down That Base”) to ensure maximum reflection. We cannot wait to see swatches of this high-shine colour in action.

Beauty Fix: A game-changing set of makeup brushes, your best bet for boosting volume in flat hair and more
Every week our Beauty Fix columnist takes on your questions about makeup, skincare, hair and more. Have a beauty question we haven’t answered? Email us at beautyfix@fashionmagazine.com.
I want to overhaul my beauty bag with a new set of makeup brushes. What should I look for in terms of brushes that will help create a natural look and finish?
Cosmetics are so effective in enhancing your features and brushes are an excellent way of using and manipulating different products to further boost what you already have. Go beyond traditional brushes and try something new with M.A.C’s Masterclass Brush Collection (from $30, maccosmetics.com). These brushes—which, admittedly, look like a cross between a hairbrush and a toothbrush—may be intimidating at first, but are a game changer once you get them in your hands! The super-soft synthetic bristles are tightly packed to achieve a very smooth finish when applying cream products. They’re also fantastic for packing on powder pigment (with a heavier hand and buffing motion) or diffusing colour for the softest, most natural finish (by using a gentle, sweeping motion). And thanks to the ergonomic handles, these brushes are extremely user-friendly for anyone, from makeup novice to makeup maven. -
New York Fashion Week backstage beauty: 57 pictures of the best manicures and nail art from the Spring 2014 shows
See the Spring 2014 nail art looks up close »
The nails at New York Fashion Week were right in tune with the ’90s minimalism style we saw on the Spring 2014 runways. Sheer is in, colour is out and the nail art trend seems to be winding down. The bare and buffed nails of last spring are still going strong for 2014, with designers like Altuzarra, Alexander Wang and Jeremy Laing opting for pale shades of pink, lavender or beige instead of punchy pastels and neon brights.

Introducing the OPI Bond Girls collection: See all 6 Liquid Sand nail polishes now
See the entire OPI Bond Girls nail polish collection »
OPI is releasing a nail polish collection inspired by the iconic Bond girls from the past 50 years of James Bond films. Hot on the heels of their successful James Bond SkyFall collection last year, the latest OPI James Bond collaboration includes six new textured nail shades for each of Bond’s most memorable female characters.
Titled Bond Girls, the new collection features six uniquely textured Liquid Sand nail polishes that have a shimmery-yet-matte finish. True to the Bond girls’ high-fashion image, the glittery hues of pink, gold, turquoise and purple are eye-catching and glamourous. Fans of textured nail art will love the sparkly 3-D feeling of Liquid Sand polish—which is quickly becoming a mainstay in OPI collections. With strict instructions not to use a top coat, the nail polish leaves a pebbled finish fitting the allure surrounding the Bond girls, as well as the ongoing trend of textured nail art.
