Go inside Power Ball 2011 and peep all the Jeremy Laing–wearing lovelies!

Photography by Jan Stasiuk What’s the one event that’s sure to draw throngs of artists, social busybodies and high rollers alike? The annual Power Ball, held in support of the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, is the one stop on Toronto’s gala circuit that you really don’t want to miss.
The theme of this year’s fest was The 13th Floor, described by the organizers as, “A place you’ve never been before. A party untouched by time and cloaked in intrigue. Hidden surprises, altered realities, a playground for the imagination.” And what a playground it was. Held in the labyrinthine lakefront gallery, the party was attended by more than 1,700 people in what felt like 13 different rooms, each with its own theme and soundtrack.

The glitz from the opening of Montreal’s Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit + watch talking mannequins in action!

“So pleased.” That was how Jean Paul Gaultier summed up his feelings about his retrospective Monday night at the VIP party held at Montreal’s Musée des Beaux-Arts. “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk” opened Monday night with an intimate gathering that mixed Gaultier’s inner circle with Quebec designers and celebs. Male muse Tanel Bedrossiantz in skirt and mohawk, bald and tattooed Ève Salvail, Francisco Randez, star of Gaultier Le Male fragrance ads and doll-like French singer Arielle, in body-hugging tulle, joined musician Melissa Auf der Maur, International Herald Tribune critic Suzy Menkes, Newsweek’s Robin Givhan, and hairstylist Odile Gilbert in touring the show. An ebullient Gaultier, who initially had not been keen on the notion of a retrospective—“it can be like a funeral,” he told me back in January—was clearly enjoying himself, wandering the rooms and amiably chatting and posing for photos.

Party snaps! The Bay’s over-the-top ode to Anna Dello Russo and Tommy Ton

Photography by Lewis Mirrett Should you ever find yourself in a similar predicament, the most appropriate way to fête an international fashion superstar in the hometown of her photog paramour would be to roll out the leopard carpet, send in the trannies and keep the bubbly flowing until a dance party ensues amidst racks of designer duds.

Life’s not fair: A guide to TIFF swag lounges and the celebrities who love them
What most elementary school teachers don’t teach their kids is that the word “gift” can also be a verb. To gift, or gifting is a major part of TIFF, where if you’re an A-lister (or even a B-lister) you’ll get spoiled and pampered just for being you. Brands want celebrities to be seen with their […]

TIFF party pics: Kenneth Cole talks mix-and-match black, plus red carpet snaps of Kelly Rowland, Martin Sheen and more

Kenneth Cole on the red carpet. Photography by Elli Stuhler There’s nothing like celebrity endorsement to open hearts (read: wallets) for a good cause. So when Kenneth Cole, Kelly Rowland, Martin Sheen, Emilio Estevez signed up to attend the event, so did the majority of the Porche-driving population of Rosedale.
The result was some yummy black tie style, and some yummier conversations with Kenneth Cole and Kelly Rowland. See my Q&A with Cole after the jump.

TIFF snaps: M.I.A. pauses, ever so briefly, for our cameras at the Roosevelt Room
M.I.A.’s in town supporting Our Day Will Come by Romain Gavras, the same French director who did her creepy ginger genocide vid for Born Free. After the premiere the crew headed to the Roosevelt Room for an after party, but M.I.A. wasn’t in much of a mood to stop and chat. Makes sense, if the […]

TIFF weekend roundup: Check out our celeb gossip and party pics
We spent the weekend hopping from party to vodka-soaked party (really, it appeared that every grain alcohol company in existence threw a TIFF bash) to keep tabs the celebs that have infiltrated the city. Read on for what Carey Mulligan wore to the hottest party of the weekend, Martin Sheen flashing his underpants, our many […]

TIFF party pics: Martin Sheen shows us his underwear and Paul Haggis kisses Josh Brolin

Nice pants, President Bartlet. Photography Kira Crugnale Seeing jokester Paul Haggis kissing Josh Brolin is almost too good to be true. Seeing this the same evening as Martin Sheen showing cameras his underwear just isn’t fair.
The red carpet at the the Artists for Peace and Justice Fundraiser for Haiti event last night at the Toro After Dark space was, without a doubt, the most fun step and repeat in the city. Haggis turned to Brolin to give him a big smoocher on the mouth, which was followed by Brolin exclaiming, “that’s it, my career is OVER!”
This was probably the second best moment of the evening, which was promptly followed by Martin Sheen being encouraged to show us his Ellen Degeneres-gifted briefs–in exchange for a $1,000 donation to Haiti. To his publicist’s utter chagrin (who, for the record, was somewhat like a real life Lloyd from Entourage) he turned around, undid belt, dropped a bit of trou, turned back and showed us those briefs. But it’s for a good cause right?

TIFF party pics: Carey Mulligan, Marion Cotillard and James Franco at the Vanity Fair bash
The Thompson hotel hosted a blockbuster line-up of celebs last night for the Fox Searchlight/Belvedere/Vanity Fair party. Carey Mulligan arrived fresh from the Never Let Me Go premiere, sporting a starry Christopher Kane dress with a zip-on panel at the bottom. Though she was gone by the time we arrived, Marion Cotillard made an appearance, […]

TIFF party pics: Entourage‘s Jonathan Keltz wears his beer pong shirt to the Hello! Canada party
Gossip mag Hello! Canada rolled out the red carpet to let party attendees (mainly Canuck talent) play with reporters. We talked wardrobe with Noah Reid (Score: A Hockey Musical), Natalie Brown and Jonathan Keltz (Entourage). To see who was wearing a homemade dress, a beer pong T-shirt and a shirt borrowed from his dad’s closet, […]

TIFF party pics: Emily Hampshire, Rachel Blanchard, and Juliette Lewis in emerald Dolce at the Alliance bash

Juliette Lewis at the Alliance bash. Photography by Kira Crugnale Last night Alliance hosted a bash for Toronto industry insiders and visiting talent to sling back a couple of cocktails under the shadow of the appropriately shiny Scotia Bank tower.
Who did we see? There were rumours of Clive Owen and David Schwimmer, but alas, no. We did however get Juliette Lewis, who’s in town supporting Conviction with Hilary Swank. You could tell she was there as an actress, rather than rock star by her teeny tiny emerald green Dolce & Gabbana. She gushed to red carpet reporters about loving TIFF for how laid back it is. Yeah, we get that a lot.
