FASHION plates: Let’s play ball!
By Randi Bergman and Jordan Porter
Nothing says summer quite like that first day spent at the ballgame: sun on your face, cheering fans, popcorn and hot dogs with all the fixings! This summer, we’ll be carrying that carefree feeling off the field with collegiate chic baseball bombers, classic baseball tees, vintage caps and a whole lot of red and white. We’ll also be wishing we were Geena Davis and/or Madonna in A League of Our Own.

Patrick Robinson is out at Gap… but why?
Photography by Mark Von Holden/Getty Images for NYC & Company We’re barely halfway into 2011 and the fashion world has already seen our fair share of industry shake-ups: the Galliano scandal, Carine Roitfeld’s exit at Vogue Paris, Christophe Decarnin’s mysterious mental illness/ousting at Balmain, and now Patrick Robinson has been booted from the Gap.
While most of the recent switch ups seem to make sense⎯Galliano’s anti-Semitic outburst couldn’t very well go un-reprehended and Decarnin’s health issues were clearly in need of medical attention⎯we found ourselves puzzled upon hearing the news that Robinson had been presented with a pink slip due to lackluster sales in the first quarter of this year. We’ve seen many a powerhouse figure reinstate retail dinosaurs (Bonnie Brooks at The Bay , Jenna Lyons at J.Crew), so why not Robinson at the Gap?

Designer profile: Alex & Eli’s far-out, tailored riffs
Photography by Tom Hines Back when Aja Singer and Anna Zeman were new-found Parsons grads, the Toronto and Seattle natives banded together to fill the gap between high-end and the everyday. Five seasons later, the two have clearly defined their New York-based brand, Alex & Eli, as the answer to virtually every wardrobe dilemma a twenty-something girl about town might have. With a combined resume boasting apprenticeships at the likes of Zac Posen, Carolina Herrera and Rodarte, its no wonder that the fairly young brand has got such strong vision. While others may design with pure fantasy in mind, Singer and Zeman just get it.
Both having studied science in their undergraduate years, the designers were inspired by Star Trek when creating their fall collection. Blending those far-out references with the duo’s yen for tailoring, the collection comes off as flawlessly relaxed and firmly planted in reality. As soon as we got our hands on the fall look book, we had no choice but to find out more from the horses’ designers’ mouths.

Collaboration love: Shop Rodarte for Opening Ceremony in Canada!
Photography by Autumn de Wilde The long-awaited collaboration between design darlings, Laura and Kate Mulleavy, and coolest place on earth, Opening Ceremony, is here! Well, online that is… The sisters channeled a similarly offbeat ‘70s inspiration as their spring 2011 collection into a selection of enviable separates for the label, at slightly lower prices than their own line. Featuring eyelet blazers, drip dyed cardigans, tapestry dresses and too many lace-up motifs to count, the collection screams baby, grandma and cool-girl all at the same time. You can view the collection online now, but if you’d like to shop the pieces in the flesh (or in the lace), they’ll be available exclusively in Canada at Holt Renfrew next month.

Fashion news: U.S. moves piracy bill closer to law, Haider Ackermann to stop men’s line, and bookie calls odds on Kate Middleton’s dress designer
Photography by Stephane Feugere The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee passed the Innovative Design Protection and Piracy Prevention Act yesterday. The bill would allow designers to copyright patterns and designs–currently protection only applies to trademarks–in an effort to keep knock-offs at bay. If the bill becomes law, it would be up to the courts to decide what’s original and therefore would be protected. [Fashionista]
Haider Ackermann will stop producing his men’s label after the first season in what the company is calling a deliberate creative move. Says the owner of BVBA 32, the Belgian company that operates Ackermann’s line: “Haider wanted to underline the image he made for his women’s line with the man at her side. The men’s collection will be added again at the time Haider wants to and it will not be linked to a season. [Vogue UK] Read our interview with Haider Ackermann
