Scuba do: Check out FASHION’s photo shoot and go behind the scenes in tropical Hawaii
Escape the chill and head to heavenly Hawaii in resort brights, surfer prints and dive-inspired details. For our very first resort collections shoot, we couldn’t imagine a more fitting setting than the swaying palms and long stretches of white sandy beach on Oahu—especially since Givenchy, Stella McCartney, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Marni resort were blooming with wild botanical prints and scuba-inspired silhouettes in a tropical paradise palette. Armed with a salt water–filled spray bottle and a boatload of bronzer, our hair and makeup artist Greg Wencel created a sun-kissed, unfussy beach beauty look for model Natalia Bogdanova. A short drive along the coast from Waikiki, we scaled the sloping cliffscape to the crashing waves below to shoot on sparkling black rocks at Lana’i Lookout (or Rifle Range, as the locals call it) and Halona Cove. We spent the day flinging ourselves into the pounding surf to cool off between frames. Our story was completed with a professional surfer as handsome accessory—and on the last day of the trip, we mustered the courage to take a lesson and catch a few waves of our own.

They said/We said: British-based fashion design houses have been ordered to pay their interns
Photography by Peter Stigter For the past few months, we’ve been following reports that Britain’s Revenue and Customs is planning a raid on the fashion design houses that benefit from the use of unpaid interns. Yesterday, all 102 companies that participated in last London Fashion Week were issued a warning: starting in 2012, no fashion house, regardless of its size, is allowed to enlist the help of unpaid interns. Each company must either pay their interns at least the minimum wage of £6.08 an hour or find a way to do without.
For some companies, the switch is a fast and easy one—Stella McCartney has already changed its policy, and starting in January will offer paid positions only. This will be more of a challenge for newcomers and smaller designers, whose budgets don’t include being able to pay their extra help. “Most people who are starting out in the industry just don’t have the funds,” explains SIBLING’s Cozette McCreery to Elle UK. “It’s just done with love, and that’s it. When the main designers aren’t getting paid—if you can’t find money to pay yourself—it’s really difficult to find money to pay others.”

Vote! Who takes the cake for best dressed designer/muse duo at the British Fashion Awards?
Left: Alexa Chung and Christopher Kane shot by Mike Marsland/Getty Images. Middle: Kate Moss and Stella McCartney shot by Dave M. Benett/Getty Images. Right: Marc Jacobs and Victoria Beckham shot by Mike Marsland/Getty Images Some of our favourite fashion talents were celebrated last night at the 2011 British Fashion Awards in London, with Sarah Burton, Mary Katrantzou, and Charlotte Olympia (to name a few) coming out on top in their respective categories. As always, what everyone was wearing was equally top of our minds, and we’ve especially enjoyed these neat little red carpet photo combos of megawatt designer avec megawatt muse (or muse-come-designer in Victoria Beckham’s case). In one corner, we’ve got the bright-young-thing duo of Christopher Kane and Alexa Chung donning a look from his Spring 2012 collection, and with Charlotte Olympia kitten heels. In the other, you’ve got the black-on-black pairing of Marc Jacobs and Beckham in her own design (may we just say, Vicky’s looking less extreme than usual, and we like it) The always-cool McCartney and Moss duo triumph with Stella in a sexy-tomboy suit and Kate in all-over fishnet. So, who takes the cake for the best dressed duo?

PFW diary: Our top picks from Stella McCartney, Giambattista Valli, Vanessa Bruno, Emanuel Ungaro, Chloé, and Yves Saint Laurent
Stella McCartney shot by Antonio de Moraes Barros Filho/WireImage With a thriving ready-to-wear brand, several collaboration projects on the go, four kids, a dashing hubby (publisher Alasdhair Willis) and an icon for a Dad (Sir Paul!) it’s little wonder we bow down to Stella McCartney. Who doesn’t want to be a Stella girl? She’s effortlessly chic but not perfectly turned out; she is a minimalist but has a playful side; she is confident and a great confidante. In the modeling world a Stella girl looks like Miranda Kerr, Natasha Poly, Natalia Vodianova, or Anja Rubik, fitting given that they all walked in McCartney’s Spring 2012 show. And what a show it was: crisp white jackets with mesh inserts, Baroque-inspired embellishment, a shockwave of royal blue, tunics with side slits (a big theme this week), casual pieces in a graphic wave motif reminiscent of silk pajamas, paisley (welcome back!), one-shouldered dresses, onyx-white clutches, sporty flatforms, and quilted shoulder bags tied in a bow.
