Forget your Saturday night: Alexander Wang for H&M was announced at Coachella

Photography by Jerod Harris/Getty Images However cool you thought your Saturday night was, Alexander Wang probably has you beat. Again. The designer announced his upcoming collaboration with H&M last night, which in and of itself is a big deal. He’s the first-ever American designer to collaborate with the brand. He’s also just a liiiitle busy lately, but hey. Why not make top the major with more major—a throw down dance party at Coachella featuring surprise performances by Iggy Azealea, Major Lazer and Diplo. The designer also used the announcement to launch his Instagram account, which previously stayed update-less for two years. “We were really waiting for the right moment to do something with it and find the right project. We kept it going and it kind of accumulated followers without any posts and we thought, what a great idea for the first post to be this, so we did a really fun video,” the designer told WWD.

What’s in your bag, Nancy Won?

Photography by Colin Gaudet Oh, how time has flown! It seems like just yesterday Nancy Won joined the FASHION Magazine team as fashion news editor—but it was actually almost a year ago! Meaning: We’re way overdue for exploring the contents of her purse. Nancy describes her Alexander Wang bag as badass and we’d certainly use that word to describe her personal style as well. (From stacking rings to Nike kicks, Nancy’s got cool-girl style on lock.) And as you can see from our purse snooping—crystals! A tiny Tabasco sauce!—the inside of her bag is pretty cool too.

Your first time at any international fashion week will teach you a valuable lesson: You need a fur. And not just any Margot Tenenbaum style granny hand-me-down. A fur so intricately patterned, multi-layered and artificially coloured, that it has to be designer. Given its place at the apex of the top Fall 2014 trends, you’d think recessionary times were long gone—it’s virtually everywhere, from a hyper colour mink at Altuzarra to a fluffy red dress at Prada. Wear it with caution or as Dior prescribes, dangle it over your arm like it’s no big d. Let the fur fly, scruples or otherwise.

Standing in the rain outside of the Balenciaga show this morning, all I wish I’d worn was a classic trench coat, instead of the soggy denim topper I’d packed instead. It got me thinking about ultimate classics and how certain pieces, beyond the white shirt and the little black dress, have entered that coveted club. While fashion’s frenetic cycle churns out new trends at a breakneck speed, today’s roster of Fall 2014 shows during Paris Fashion Week proved there are pieces that are here to stay and new classics that have become staples to invest in, reappearing season after season.
Which looks were the timeless winners among the hundreds of runway exits today? These are my picks for the 4 new classics that are must-haves for Fall 2014 and beyond:

Green glitter at Altuzarra, helmet hair at Alexander Wang: 9 beauty statements from the Fall 2014 shows

Russet lipstick as eyeshadow at Helmut Lang
Helmut Lang’s textured, masculine collection was complemented with a simple, pared down face punctuated by a soft wash of lustrous burgundy on the eye. “It’s very minimal and clean but with a hint of punk,” said lead artist Hannah Murray, who painted Nars lipstick in “Deborah Audacious” (coming this fall) onto the eye and pressed “Heat” bronzing powder over it to set. She skipped eyeliner, mascara and brow colour, and kept the under-eye area clean to avoid a “pink-eye” effect. -

Moody, botanical and a little bit Canadian: welcome to Balenciaga for Spring 2014. Toronto supermodel Daria Werbowy fronts the Steven Klein-shot ad campaign and it’s safe to say the images are A+.
Slated to debut in print next month, the campaign’s first image shows Werbowy at peace, leaning against a white wall engulfed in botanical vines. The others showcase the supermodel sporting the brand’s crop-driven Spring 2014 collection pieces. “I wanted to convey a sense of strength and knowingness,” said Balenciaga creative director Alexander Wang. “Daria is definitely not naïve.” With a gaze as powerful as hers, these ads will surely stop onlookers dead in their tracks.
