Dark Ages: Our October issue beauty shoot pays homage to this season’s dark heroine with crimson lips, oxblood nails and barely there brows
Crimson lips, oxblood nails and barely there brows and lashes are the perfect backdrop for one of Fall 2012’s biggest fashion trends: the dark heroine. Inspired by characters like Lisbeth Salander, Morticia Addams and even Snow White (likely of the Kristen Stewart variety), the look took hold at shows as different as Gucci and Viktor & Rolf, transforming models into vampiric goddesses at each show. In this photo shoot ode, our beauty team sets the stage with sombre velvets, beading, lace.

Pink is bringing her edgy aesthetic to Cover Girl as their newest spokesperson
It looks like pink hair is the new normal for drugstore beauty brands. First it was Maybelline with model Charlotte Free and now Cover Girl has named feisty, candy-floss-haired singer Pink as their newest spokesperson. The singer will certainly give the all-American brand a bit of edginess too, joining ranks with a diverse set of spokesmodels including Taylor Swift, Queen Latifah, Drew Barrymore and Canadian Olympian Mary Spencer.

Miley’s gone blonde and Taylor’s now brunette! Which new dye job do you like best?
In breaking hair colour news, two pop sensations with a love for country have given their locks a serious colour overhaul over the past couple days.
Recently engaged Miley Cyrus tweeted a phone-snapped pic of her new blonde tresses, along with the message “Now that I’m blonde I gotta give duck lips in every photo” (we have no idea what that could possibly mean). The Hannah Montana star also shed a few inches, giving her locks a fresh departure from the long, auburn style she’d been wearing over the past year.

Rooney! Emma! Angelina! Here are 5 of our favourite beauty moments from the Oscars
Well, our vote for the biggest upset at this year’s Oscars has to be the makeup. From Michelle Williams’ usual routine of a glossed lip and lightly lined eye to Cameron Diaz’s typical pink lipstick, it seemed like almost all the top stars were playing it safe on the red carpet. Neutral shades and sheer nail polish abound! That being said, amongst all the usual suspects it’s still possible to find inspiration—like Rooney Mara’s perfect brows, Angelina Jolie’s flawless red lip, and Emma Stone’s all-over pink shimmer. We’ve rounded up five of our favourite beauty outliers from the red carpet and have behind-the-scenes tips from the makeup artists who created each look.

Afternoon beauty fix: Show off your love for bright colours without pulling a Katy Perry
I love Katy Perry’s blue hair but I could never pull it off amidst my real-life obligations. Is there a more accessible way to show off my love for bright colours?
I’m with you on adoring a splash of colour against a sea of typical shades—Kelly Osbourne‘s violet tint looks toned down compared to Katy’s, though it would still take an informed stylist and tons of work to maintain a bright dye job on your own. Candy-coloured hair started trending with the Thakoon Spring 2012 runway show and has caught on like wildfire with musicians and actors alike. -

SNP’s word of the day: Mancession
Word: Mancession
Definition: “An economic instance in which the unemployment rate is substantially higher among men than it is among women. The term was coined during the financial crisis of 2008–2009, during which men bore the brunt of the job losses in the United States, at rates close to 50 percent higher than those of women.” — Investopedia (this is a thing that exists! Money is funny)
