Top Fall 2014 Trends: 226 runway and street style photos of fashion month’s 10 biggest moments
See the top Fall 2014 trend slideshow »
Your first time at any international fashion week will teach you a valuable lesson: You need a fur. And not just any Margot Tenenbaum style granny hand-me-down. A fur so intricately patterned, multi-layered and artificially coloured, that it has to be designer. Given its place at the apex of the top Fall 2014 trends, you’d think recessionary times were long gone—it’s virtually everywhere, from a hyper colour mink at Altuzarra to a fluffy red dress at Prada. Wear it with caution or as Dior prescribes, dangle it over your arm like it’s no big d. Let the fur fly, scruples or otherwise.

Quelle surprise! Dior gains Peter Philips, Chanel’s former makeup director
Photography by Peter Stigter Beauty editors’ polished mouths dropped to the floor this morning with the announcement of Dior’s new creative and image director. The reason behind this beauty world startle? It’s Peter Philips, the former creative director for Chanel cosmetics. From 2008 to 2013, Philips was responsible for some of the French powerhouse’s major beauty product innovations, including launching now-iconic nail polish shades (Particulière, Jade and Mimosa, to name a few) as well as Rouge Coco Hydrating Crème Lip Colour. And how can we forget the beauty feats he pulled off for Chanel’s runway shows? For Spring 2009, he tattooed models with pearls, chains and blossoms. In Fall 2012 he made us all reconsider our eyebrows with the debut of custom Chanel bejeweled brows, and the following year we were ready to break out the glitter after he lined the models’ eyes with elegant sequins.

Life in Paris slows over the weekend to allow for leisurely strolls and sipping coffees in corner cafés, but the shows must go on and fashion’s power players kept pace. Saturday and Sunday’s schedules included some of Paris’ most influential designers including Givenchy, Céline, Chloé and Kenzo. The city of lights’ brightest stars didn’t disappoint—here’s our update of the five hottest trends to come off the runways so far at Paris Fashion Week Fall 2014:

It’s all about the statement eye in Paris: 3 knock-out beauty looks from backstage at the Fall 2014 shows
Dries Van Noten and Lanvin photography by Peter Stigter; Dior photography via Instagram/allure_magazine It’s all about the statement eye in Paris. Leading the charge—as usual—is Pat McGrath, whose latex-painted eye launched a thousand Instagrams from backstage at Dior this morning. If you’re as obsessed with glitter as we are, you know that the beauty at Dior is the place to be (hello, lover) and the two eye looks she created for Fall 2014 certainly surpassed our expectations.
The first was a shimmering assortment of “urban khaki” shades, applied heavily to the upper lid with just a trace trailing down from the inner eye. But the second look—the blue!—was the standout. According to Allure, McGrath traced the shape first with eyeliner, then applied latex makeup paint topped with a shimmer. Eyelashes were also painted with a matching blue mascara. This thick, vibrant-blue look makes us want to start mixing our own makeup mediums, pronto.
However, if bright blue glitter isn’t your thing, you can still get in on the statement eye trend with the looks from Dries Van Noten and Lanvin.

Rihanna looks insanely amazing, as always, at the Paris Fashion Week Fall 2014 shows

There are some definite perks to being one of the world’s biggest superstars. Private birthday party weekend in Aspen? Check. New Year’s Eve celebrations with your bestie Cara Delevingne? Check. But perhaps the biggest perk of all, is getting to sit front and centre at the major fashion shows, obviously wearing all the latest designs too. Rihanna is one lucky girl, and has been out in Paris all week long, showing her support for her designers pals at shows like Lanvin—‘sup Alber Elbaz?—and Balmain, oh hey Olivier Rousteing!—in show stopping outfits.
At Lanvin’s Fall 2014 show, she opted for a head-to-toe look by the fashion house mixing black tapered trousers with a slate grey fluted jacket with soft pleats at the waistline, topped off by a camel fedora. The pièce de résistance, however, was the eye-catching wraparound grey fur stole worn horizontally across the chest—we smell a new trend.

Beauty Fix: Two ways to help tired-looking skin, how to update your manicure for spring and more

How important is sleep to healthy skin? I haven’t been getting much sleep lately and I’m not sure if it’s negatively impacting my skin.
While a lot of emphasis is placed on the importance of healthy eating, exercise and proper skincare, getting a proper night’s rest is often underestimated in terms of how much of a difference it makes to overall health, skin being no exception. While skincare products cannot entirely replace the benefits of a good night’s sleep, they can help prompt an earlier bedtime. If you aren’t able to unwind at the day’s end, the lavender scent of Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream Skin Protectant Nighttime Miracle Moisturizer ($47, thebay.com) can help slow you down. It’s incredibly soothing and the formula contains shea butter and vitamin E to hydrate, as well as salicylic acid for a bit of exfoliation— revealing skin that looks the precise opposite of exhausted.

Anne Hathaway versus Jennifer Lawrence: Which A-lister rocks the pixie cut best?
The pixie cut was, without a doubt, one of the top trends of 2013 and has seemingly continued into 2014 with aplomb. Two of Hollywood’s biggest stars, Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Lawrence, have made the pixie cut a red carpet staple, and each rocks the style in her own way.
After she famously chopped off her hair for Les Mis, there were rumours that Anne Hathaway was eager to grow back some length, pronto. However, it seems the short cut is here to stay: Hathaway debuted a sleeker version of her now-signature style earlier this week at the Sundance Film Festival and it looks better than the original. With ultra-shaved sides and slightly-tousled bangs, Hathaway took her pixie cut to new, er, lengths. As for the rest of her outfit, barely-there bronze makeup and simple stud earrings kept the focus on her hair, while a slouchy emerald-green suit played up the androgynous-chic look.

Who wore it best at the Girls Season Three premiere party?
Photography by Michael Stewart/WireImage
Last night’s New York premiere of Girls Season Three was like something out of my fantasies. Natasha Lyonne, Steve Buscemi, Gaby Hoffman and Anna Wintour (in a Spring 2014 Prada fur) all at one party. Holy wow. Given how much “the ladies” (a.k.a. me) adore the show, its pretty fitting that I’d be seething with jealousy at this motley crew. So, like… can I at least pick apart their outfits? Just kidding, I have nothing bad to say.
Co-stars Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke and Zosia Mamet pulled the colour co-ordination card, all favouring shimmering metallic, a forthcoming Spring 2014 trend, in their looks for the night.
