I really want standout nails this holiday season. What’s something different I can try?
If you feel like you’ve tried every colour out there and are still committed to making a lasting impression with your manicure, explore adornment options! Let me direct your attention to Dior Diorific Jewel Manicure Duo ($39, thebay.com). The duo kit comes with a shimmery light-gold polish that is festive and gorgeous all on its own, but the second bottle in the kit contains translucent crystal micro-pearls to add to your nails—or single accent nail—just before the polish is fully set. The finished look is a refined rendition of a caviar bead manicure, thanks to the tiny size and translucent, light-catching nature of the crystal pearls. The kit also comes with a tray and funnel, so you’ll be able to avoid wasting any precious pearls, making this a duo you’ll reach for plenty for special occasions to come. -
Beauty Fix: A new twist on the traditional red lip, a natural way to soothe eczema and more

How can I stand out in a sea of red lips this holiday season?
If there’s one thing that we know, it’s that there’s nothing more classically festive (and frankly, quite predictable) than a red lip during the holiday season. If you’re the type of person who is more comfortable going against the grain when it comes to beauty, try a reddish lip instead. Dior’s Diorific lipstick in “Winter” ($40, at Dior counters), which is a berry shade with a hint of metallic gold sheen that catches the light, really sings when paired with a violet shade. (Which, by the way, is another shade of lipstick I highly recommend as an alternate to red lips.) Try the two shades together for an ombré look, with the berry shade applied all over the lips with violet blended in from the perimetre of the lips towards the centre. The result is a stunning deep-fuschia, which will definitely set you apart from the red lips that will be everywhere this holiday season.

On the 60th anniversary of Christian Dior’s Rouge Dior lipstick line, Natalie Portman shares her favourite shades

Although Christian Dior the brand is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its Rouge Dior line this year, the truth is that Christian Dior the man made his first lipstick four years earlier. He conceived it in 1949 as a sort of limited-edition gift with purchase, sending it to the most loyal clients of his Colifichet boutique on Avenue Montaigne in Paris as a Christmas present. No doubt those ladies treasured their new makeup staple, as would Marlene Dietrich, Josephine Baker and Grace Kelly some years later.
Since then, Rouge Dior has encompassed 1,500 shades—from the first eight colours designed to match different couture outfits to the lurid ’70s brights dreamed up by former cosmetic artistic director Serge Lutens to the two newest additions: Darling (a vibrant pink) and Trafalgar (a punchy coral). The latter takes its name from Monsieur Dior’s old “Coup de Trafalgar” trick of throwing a notice-me bright red dress into a long runway presentation to make sure his audience wasn’t dozing.

Every time I try to apply mascara on my lower lashes, I make a mess of my undereye area with accidental smudges from the wand. Should I be using a different technique?
More like a different wand, actually! While your favourite mascara may be an absolute miracle worker for top lashes, its large wand can make it an absolute nightmares for bottom lashes. Maybelline Volum’Express Falsies Big Eyes Mascara ($11, well.ca) is likely to be your go-to mascara if coating your lower lashes is an absolute must, as it’s a double-ended mascara with two wands: one wand is slightly larger for optimal volume for the top lashes and the other is a mega-skinny wand for precise mascara application for the lower lashes. This allows you to get right to the lash roots without hitting the skin, meaning you can maximize each and every little lash for ultimate impact. -

Dior’s Spring 2014 runway, set under a canopy of bright foliage, was meant to depict a beautiful yet eerie garden. Though Raf Simon’s striking collection featured a parade of neons, vibrant floral motifs and shimmering brocade, the makeup was arguably the most eye-catching aspect of the show. Makeup artist Pat McGrath had created variations on the theme of gold brocade. The most dramatic of her trio of looks consisted of golden and pastel blue eyes topped by gilded brows. Believe it or not, with a few tweaks this over-the-top look is very wearable. We’ll show you how to recreate a no-fuss version of this golden girl look.

I work in a somewhat conservative environment, but I’m really drawn to metallics for fall. How can I incorporate this into my look without being over the top in the workplace?
Office dress codes are in place for a reason, so let’s not break any rules per se, but rather bend them ever so slightly. When looking at metallic beauty products, the key to finding something that’s agreeable with your office look is usually in the glitter or shimmer quotient of the product. You can easily swap out a creamy neutral nail polish for a shade like Joe Fresh Beauty Nail Polish in “Quartz” ($4, joefresh.com), which is a mid-tone duochrome purple metallic shade with a shimmer that reads as a glow in the bottle. A shade like this is actually quite understated and downright chic when sported on short nails. -
