Bhldn: Saving bridesmaids everywhere
For a good swath of us, right now is bridesmaid season, which can be a trying time—if not as hilariously eventful as that of Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy. It’s those months leading up to summer when showers and bachelorettes have to be planned, decorations consulted upon and, of course, matching dresses bought. Unless your bride-friend is going the “just get a black dress” route (yeah right), this can be torturous exercise in body shape assessment, silhouette negotiation and perusal of thousands of geriatric satin numbers, many of which are composed of highly flammable fibres and aren’t lined properly. Need we mention that those will never be worn again?

Patrick Robinson is out at Gap… but why?
Photography by Mark Von Holden/Getty Images for NYC & Company We’re barely halfway into 2011 and the fashion world has already seen our fair share of industry shake-ups: the Galliano scandal, Carine Roitfeld’s exit at Vogue Paris, Christophe Decarnin’s mysterious mental illness/ousting at Balmain, and now Patrick Robinson has been booted from the Gap.
While most of the recent switch ups seem to make sense⎯Galliano’s anti-Semitic outburst couldn’t very well go un-reprehended and Decarnin’s health issues were clearly in need of medical attention⎯we found ourselves puzzled upon hearing the news that Robinson had been presented with a pink slip due to lackluster sales in the first quarter of this year. We’ve seen many a powerhouse figure reinstate retail dinosaurs (Bonnie Brooks at The Bay , Jenna Lyons at J.Crew), so why not Robinson at the Gap?

The daily steal: Merino wool sweater, $51
I’ve got a bit of a problem with sweatshirts at the moment–buying them that is–which is why I love this merino wool sweater from J.Crew ($51, jcrew.com). It’s got the slouch and athletic styling of a favourite fleece, but pair it with a pencil skirt and it’s perfect for the office.

The daily steal: Neon ankle socks, $15
The beautiful looks in “The Wearable Lightness of Being,” styled by fashion director Susie Sheffman in the May 2010 issue of FASHION, took our breath away when they first came across our desks. Many of the gorgeous items, while breathtaking, also come with hard-to-swallow price tags. Happily, the looks were paired up with democratically-priced neon […]

Fashion news: Robin Kay speaks out about the Holts FWeek breakfast [updated], Canadians are safe shoppers and Shu Uemura to cease U.S. operations
Allegations made by models of Terry Richardson‘s inappropriate behaviour haven’t seemed to effect his career or his reputation, as the photographer was back to work, shooting model Doutzen Kroes for Vogue in Miami yesterday. [Vogue UK]
FDCC prez Robin Kay spoke out at yesterday’s Holt Renfrew‘s media breakfast, which showcased work from five Canadian designers who don’t show at LG Fashion Week. (Watch for our coverage of the event later today.) Holts brought in Vogue writer Mark Holgate, who will not be attending the main event at the Allstream Centre [UPDATE: Mark Holgate attended the IZMA show on Sunday night with Holt Renfrew’s communications director, Moira Wright.] Kay told the Toronto Star: “Holt Renfrew is a sponsor – with their largesse they should have made a point of bringing that gentleman to the site to see that we are a fashion week and to see designers he may not have heard of. That’s a sponsor’s duty and responsibility.” For Holts’ part, their fashion VP Barbara Atkin said: ““[Bringing these designers to fashion week] is something we’ve talked about and we are in discussions about.” [Toronto Star, via Toronto Life]
With J.Crew scouting locations and Victoria’s Secret‘s plans to open four north-of-the-49th stores, Canada has become the ‘it’ place for retailers looking to open international stores–because we’re nearby and not that exotic, apparently. Says the Wall Street Journal: “Canadians tend to be slower, steadier shoppers than Americans, with a preference for higher-quality goods and more interest in outdoor looks.” Gotta love the stereotypes, eh.
