Spring 2014 Logo Trend Alexander Wang

LOGO MANIA

Between Alexander Wang and DKNY, the two pace-setting New York designers are taking the logo to the next level. In an over-the-top throwback to old school New York streetwear, both designers went all out, think in-your-face prints at DKNY and laser cut everything (skirts, crop tops, coats, gloves) at Wang.

Spring 2014 Crop Top Trend Rag Bone

CROP TOPS

Time to renew that Pilates membership because toned abs and crop tops are cropping up once again all over spring runways. From halters at Rag & Bone and athletic brights at DKNY to structured with lace at Jill Stuart and laser-cut mesh at Alexander Wang, these new crops aren’t for the faint of heart.

Spring 2014 Sheer Trend Jeremy Laing

SHEER

When designers weren’t endorsing bare midriffs with full on crop tops, they were hinting at it with suggestively sheer fabrics. We saw sheer stripes at Peter Som and Tibi, see-through layers at Jason Wu and Jeremy Laing, and sheer fabrics remixed with prints and patterns at Rebecca Taylor and Ostwald Helgason.

Spring 2014 Minimalism Trend DKNY

‘90s MINIMALISM
Designers are still stuck in the ‘90s for spring, but this season grunge and punk have given way to the crisp, clean minimalism of the late ‘90s. Delicate spaghetti-strapped slip dresses ruled at Jason Wu and DKNY, while Helmut Lang and Rag & Bone endorsed the season’s new minimalism in seriously simple suits and separates.

Spring 2014 Sage Green Trend Lacoste

SAGE GREEN

Signaling fresh spring renewal, we’re spotting sage green all over New York runways. Jason Wu did it in a pale sage short suit and organza dresses, while Ruffian’s silk cotton pantsuit played up the shade’s ocean-y undertones. Meanwhile, Lacoste toned down it’s signature shade for tennis court-ready looks in preppy pale green.

The first half of New York Fashion Week Spring flew by in a flurry of silk chiffon and pretty prints and although it’s still early days, we’re already noticing some key looks emerging on runways. Here are the top 5 trends on our radar for Spring 2014 so far.

There have been 99 years of touchdowns, tackles, and blitzes in the Canadian Football league, and this Sunday will make it 100. The 100-year anniversary of the Grey Cup will be heading to Toronto to host the final game of the CFL’s season and hometown team, the Toronto Argonauts, will be facing the Calgary Stampeders. While the two cities mayors may be placing bets on the winning team, we’re thinking about what to wear when watching.

Next up on our Fashionable DIY costume series, is a one Marc Jacobs. The mastermind known for creating trends with Warholian tendencies at Marc Jacobs, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton, is known for taking the same approach to his body and style.

Enter, the costume idea. Marc wore a bright pink Lacoste dress to Louis Vuitton – Marc Jacobs: The Exhibition in March, which showed off his toned body (seriously, he’s so fit) and some of his cartoon inspired tattoos. We’re not saying to get matching permanent tattoos, but here’s a good opportunity to grab your most artistic pal and let them doodle all over you for one night of the year. From Spongebob Square Pants to the Simpson’s character drawn after him, you’ll be sporting by far the most fashion genius look of the night.

The race is on to find this season’s most sleek, athletic-inspired pieces. “Sport was touched on in almost every collection,” says Nicholas Mellamphy, creative director of The Room at the Bay. He points to Anthony Vaccarello’s use of tech fabrics and utility details, Antonio Berardi’s strong colour and stripe detailing, Yves Saint Laurent’s “sporty but elegant” eveningwear jumpsuits and J. Mendel’s play on the old-school sports jersey. The question is: Can sporty wear be made office-appropriate? Mellamphy laces up to give us a pep talk.

It’s a story worthy of the next Quentin Tarantino screenplay—a sick and twisted The Godfather meets Confessions of a Shopaholic hybrid. The Shopfather, perhaps? U.S. authorities have busted one of the largest counterfeit circles in American history, after more than $300 million worth of fake fashion has been smuggled stateside. That figure puts this clothing heist on the levels of some of the biggest counterfeit cigarette and crystal meth trades. Seriously.

The questionable fakes ticked all the usual boxes: Burberry scarves, Lacoste polos, and Louis Vuitton bags. But it’s the faux Uggs (since dubbed “fUggs” for obvious reasons) that display some mind-boggling creativity. After the names of honest shipping companies were used to bring the boots into the country, fake labels and soles were peeled off to reveal faux-Ugg branding. One would think that with such creative prowess, the 30 accused smugglers might do something a little more productive with their time.

When questioned on the ethics of his business tactics, one of the crime leaders reportedly said that if you had a problem with his business you should “go be a monk.” Because only monks have morals. While we can definitely understand the appeal of a bargain, counterfeit fashion is continually being linked to horrible crimes. It’s just not worth it. Especially not for a pair of Uggs.
