They said/We said: Harvey Weinstein reportedly believes that Lana Del Rey has the acting chops to make it as a movie star
Love her or hate her, Lana Del Rey’s meteoric rise to fame is showing no signs of flagging. After critics harshly panned the plush-lipped singer’s Saturday Night Live performance in January, it seemed like for a moment there, Del Rey’s star appeal was beginning to wane. However, one fashion accolade, a trip to Cannes’ red carpet and news of a big film industry opportunity later, and Del Rey is back on top.
First, there was the creation of her eponymous Mulberry bag, which was first announced in February. Its sales are fast approaching that of another famous Mulberry bag: the Alexa, named after Alexa Chung. “We wanted it to be functional with an uptown twist as Lana is such a wonderful uptown girl herself,” said Mulberry’s creative director Emma Hill.
The fashion world aside, movie mogul Harvey Weinstein was reportedly overheard at the Cannes Film Festival telling the “Video Games” singer that the “camera loves her.”
Weinstein, the co-founder of Miramax, is said to think Del Rey has all the makings of a movie star, from her stage presence to her stunning features to her gritty-meets-chic sense of style. The man obviously knows the movie biz inside and out (The Artist and The King’s Speech are two heavy-hitters that he’s responsible for), so if he is giving Del Rey the stamp of approval, other movie industry types will probably follow suit.
Whether or not she ends up on the big screen anytime soon, one thing’s for certain: this “self-styled gangsta Nancy Sinatra” has an It factor that is opening doors for her in every direction.

Nail Corner: Try Fall’s burgundy lipstick trend today… by painting tiny lips on your nails!
From lips to nails, shades of burgundy were all over the Fall 2012 runways—and, because stars are always the first to embrace a trend, the deep red lip has now dominated red carpets. Camilla Belle and Lana Del Rey both wore the colour at the Met Gala, Katy Perry can’t stop matching her just-dyed indigo hair with her lipstick, and even Jennifer Lopez is a fan of the vampy look. Of course, Nail Corner wanted to take the trend a step further: why just paint your lips and nails a shade of burgundy when you can actually paint tiny lips on your nails?

SNP’s word of the day: Trollgaze
Word: Trollgaze
Meaning: A “genre” of music defined by its Tumblr success, Twitter divisiveness, and total inability to exist outside of the internet. Coined by Maura Johnson at The Village Voice.
Usage: “A trollgaze track is utterly web-native: It’s not built to exist in a record shop, a TV channel, a collection, or even an mp3 playlist. Its natural habitat is the stream— that ceaseless flow of information we access every time we use social media. Trollgaze is something you see sandwiched between other status updates, tweets, or posts, fighting for attention with every other picture, stray thought, polemic, or advert. Its button-pushing crassness and ambiguous motives make it an evolutionary nightmare: music perfectly adapted for life in the stream.” Tom Ewing on Pitchfork, December 2011

LFW Diary: Lana Del Rey and Downton Abbey’s ladies at Mulberry, true love at Jonathan Sauders, and a whole half hour with Tom Ford
View the many (and we mean many) Mulberry celeb attendees »
Where to begin. With the celebs? Lana Del Rey (carrying the namesake Del Rey bag from the ever-growing fashion house), Michelle Williams, the surprisingly petite Elizabeth Olsen, Leigh Lezark, and Ladies Mary and Edith Crawey—I mean Michelle Dockery and Laura Carmichael—all sat front row at Mulberry; and then there were the models (Jacquetta Wheeler, Irina Lazareanu) and It girls Poppy Delevigne and model/It girl/socialite Caroline Sieber at Matthew Williamson.
