On Lorde‘s current hit, “Royals,” the 16-year-old singer-songwriter wryly implores listeners to “call her Queen Bee” so she can rule a music scene that she clearly feels needs a new sovereign. Her buzzy debut disc, Pure Heroine, serves as both scepter and crown jewel to her fantasy reign, boasting sparse, electro-basted pop tracks that bring to mind early-Björk and late-Postal Service. In the thick of her North American tour—which includes an upcoming stop in Toronto—the New Zealand-born talent took time out to chat about her pointed lyrics, her thoughts on Will, Kate and Pippa and FASHION‘s provocative cover girl, Miley Cyrus.

Ten days after Miley Cyrus’s explosive performance at MTV’s Video Music Awards, FASHION magazine photographed the 20-year-old chart-topper at a private estate in the Hollywood Hills for the November issue. Features editor Elio Iannacci was on set to conduct an in-depth interview with the singer, who opened up on her recent, radical transformation, her critics, and the making of her soon-to-be-released album, Bangerz. Here is a sneak peek of our cover story, which hits newsstands nationwide on October 7, 2013.

Ah, the MTV VMAs! If there’s one award show that calls for stars to go all out in clever costumery, it’s the VMAs. This is, after all, the event that Gwen Stefani wore a blue fun fur bikini to and where Lil’ Kim made pasties a trending topic before Twitter even existed. Basically, the rule is that you have to become a spectacle at the VMAs if you want to stand out.

Rising to the top of the VMAs 2013 best dressed challenge was, of course, Miley Cyrus. Just a day earlier she had released the ’90s-worthy cover art for her next album, Bangerz, which will certainly be the final step in the campaign to completely forget her Disney upbringing. On the VMA red carpet, Miley opted to keep it skin-tight in a crop top and leggings courtesy Dolce & Gabbana. The bejewelled pieces were vintage and had a slight Carmen Miranda vibe—though any ladylike pretensions were washed away with Miley’s playful (and persistent) tongue wagging. Of course, her red carpet outfit has nothing on what was worn during the actual show. Fun fur forever!

Talk about hitting the jackpot. On a day ruled by Miley Cyrus love/hate/backlash/confusion, The Coveteur has produced proverbial gold with a behind-the-scenes feature on Cyrus’s MTV Video Music Awards performance pre-prep, live on the site now.

The feature follows Cyrus and stylist Simone Harouche (she’s been responsible for the singer’s Susan Powter-meets-Cynthia doll makeover) backstage at the Barclay’s Stadium as they beautify for the show alongside Denika Bedrossian on make-up and Brant Mayfield on hair (yes to those genius twisty buns!).

The crop top is one of this season’s biggest statement pieces, on and off the runway. Rocked most confidently by those with bodies that can, the crop top’s been seen on celeb midriffs from Diane Kruger to Rihanna and most recently by two of Hollywood’s favourite edgiest dressers.

The crop top trend has made a good friend of Miley Cyrus, who after being photographed in a demure Chanel dress earlier the same day, returned to flaunting her abs for an appearance on Good Morning America. There to promote Las Vegas’s iHeart Radio Music Festival alongside Ryan Seacrest and Keith Urban, Cyrus wore striped and perforated black and white crop top and full skirt from Marc Jacobs’ Resort 2014 collection. Keeping things decidedly simple, Cyrus accessorized with thin layered necklaces by Jennifer Meyer, white pointed-toe heels by Celine and a signature red pout.

It’s a big week for Selena Gomez—on Friday she released her first solo album and today she turns 21. Happy Birthday, indeed! In the grand tradition of twenty-first birthdays being a big big BIG deal, Selena recorded a music video to make her fans feel like they’re all there, celebrating with her. And oh, do we ever want to be there! Set to “Birthday”—which sounds like Spring Breakers and The Bling Ring come to life—Selena and her sexy crew host a dance party that rivals the best of them, complete with sparkly crowns, break dancers, mannequins and confetti poppers. (Extra credit goes to Selena’s ’90s-inspired plaid shirt and crop top. Way to be on-trend, girl!) Now that Selena officially has the same birthday as the Royal Baby, what better way to celebrate than with a look back at some of the best house party music videos out there. From Selena’s BFF Taylor Swift to ex-BF Justin Bieber, to Janet Jackson and, of course, the Beastie Boys, let’s count ’em down!

Punk has never been so hotly debated. Ever since the Met Gala red carpet ended last night, anyone who’s a fan of fashion—and has a Twitter account—has shared their opinion on who interpreted the punk theme the best and who did it the worst. For hair and makeup, some stars took the Met Gala—and its theme, based on the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s new PUNK: Chaos to Couture exhibit—as reason enough to let loose and go all out. (Though Miley Cyrus probably doesn’t need such literal prompting!) You’d think after attending months of award shows with well-dictated dress codes that many A-listers would embrace the Met Gala as a chance to try something new. January Jones did: “I love to step outside the box,” she said of her braided hair and slick, black makeup, which was inspired by Siouxsie Sioux.

While there were certainly some gorgeous hairstyles and classic beauty looks on the Met Gala red carpet, let’s celebrate those who went beyond the cat-eye liner, red lip or sleek updo. The build up to this year’s Met Gala has been major. Designers, celebrities and the fashion elite have been scrambling to piece together a look that fits the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s theme, PUNK: Chaos to Couture and while admittedly, the punk-inspired looks were few and far between, we were certainly thrilled with a few.

Channeling her own recent V Magazine cover, Miley Cyrus went latter day Debbie Harry with platinum blonde spikes and a long fishnet Marc Jacobs dress. Anne Hathaway debuted a similarly bleached bob alongside her date and dresser for the night, Valentino Garavani, sending the twittersphere in a tizzy.

Co-chairs of the event Riccardo Tisci and Rooney Mara went punk-light with Mara in a beautifully detailed white lace Givenchy dress and a pop of crimson on the lips.

Also wearing Givenchy was none other than Beyoncé—the honourary chairperson for this year’s event. Pairing her custom-designed strapless black and gold printed gown with blinged out boots in the same shade, Queen Bey proved for her second year in a row that last on the red carpet is always best.

After finally receiving the Anna Wintour nod of approval, Kim Kardashian made an appearance at the Met Gala 2013 in a floral-print Givenchy dress with baby-daddy, Kanye West at her side.

Someone who is more known for consistently nailing red carpet looks than Kimye, is Emma Watson and she hit a high note yet again in a skin-bearing Prabal Gurung dress with a single silver drop earring hanging from her left ear.

And while Kristen Stewart has held fast to her role as the face of Balenciaga’s Florabotanica, she strayed from the house’s new wears, opting instead, for a crimson Stella McCartney pantsuit.
