The spotter’s guide to the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show
Let’s be clear about one thing: The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is not really about fashion. But we knew that, and anyway, it doesn’t really matter. Not to the hordes of young women that appear out of nowhere, pink shopping bags in hand, within a 500-metre radius of any of the lingerie titan’s locations. (There are eleven stores in Canada–four Victoria’s Secret and seven for their younger Pink line.) Not to the crowd that piled into the Armory on Lexington Avenue on November 10 to see the show–a group that included Gerard Butler, Adrien Grenier, Russell Simmons, Malin Akerman and Paris Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld. Not to every person who we’ve spoken to in the two weeks since who want to know how the Angels look up close (gorgeous, obviously), how much they have to exercise (Adriana Lima trains six days a week leading up to the show) and whether the wings are heavy (Candice Swanepoel‘s trainer give her extra shoulder exercises to prepare).

Angels (a.k.a. Adriana Lima, Chanel Iman and Erin Heatherton) descend to Toronto for a private Victoria’s Secret party
You know you’re at a Victoria’s Secret party when you have flower petals stuck in your teeth–pink flower petals garnishing your pink cocktail, no less. In honour of Toronto’s first Victoria’s Secret, at Yorkdale Shopping Centre, some angels flew over to help us celebrate at a private in-store event, which felt like a salute to bras, panties and the colour pink. Naturally, the few male attendees looked slightly out of place until, of course, the angels descended, at which point their eyes grew to be the size of dinner plates.

Meet Adriana Lima at Toronto’s new Victoria’s Secret
We know you’ve been just starving for a Victoria’s Secret in Canada. It’s understandable: Panty pilgrimages to the United States are tiring and expensive–especially if you’re going in the name of inexpensive underwear. Canada’s first outpost opened in at the West Edmonton Mall earlier this month and the second comes to T.O. this week. The […]

Q&A: Adriana Lima’s trainer tells us how she got back into pre-baby shape
By Valeria Nekhim
When one of the planet’s most famous Angels, Adriana Lima, had two weeks to get her body looking otherworldly for the Victoria’s Secret 2008 fashion show, she turned to Michael Olajide Jr., a former boxing champion and the co-founder of Aerospace, Manhattan’s sleek, machine-free boxing fitness centre. Fast-forward one year to November 2009, and Olajide had an even bigger challenge: Lima, a new mom, needed to return to her Brazilian bombshell form—fast. FASHION got a hold of the man himself on a break from training his A-list clientele (Hugh Jackman and Mickey Rourke anyone?) to get the scoop on how Lima got her Angel wings back in only five months.
When Adriana came to you two weeks before the Victoria’s Secret show in 2008, what physical goals was she hoping to achieve?
“She achieved the look that she wanted, which was really lean, defined muscle. It was very important that she didn’t bulk up and she wanted to maintain femininity. She had about two weeks to make weight, kind of like a fighter needs for the title, because she’s going out there in the barest of things in front of millions of people on TV. She came in at the last second and had never boxed before, and she really came up.” -
Fashion news: Victoria’s Secret sued, Jeanne Beker on stage and Kanye West’s leather pants addiction
Victoria’s Secret is being sued by shoe company Valley Lane Industries for US$48 million. The company claims that VS forced a Chinese supplier, who had worked with the smaller company for 25 years, to end their partnership so that the lingerie brand could work with the supplier exclusively. Says a lawyer for Valley Lane: “Victoria’s Secret has done everything they could to put them out of business.” Trouble in diamond-studded paradise? [NYDN]
But things aren’t all bad for VS. They’ve recently launched a new bra, the Incredible, and to celebrate, Chanel Iman, Candice Swanepoel and Erin Heatherton appeared on Fox & Friends, where they had the arduous task of explaining the new brassiere to two male anchors. See the exchange above. [Huffington Post]

Fashion news: The World Cup trophy’s luxe home, Christian Lacroix has a new gig and Victoria’s Secret for Halloween
The World Cup was handed over to the victorious Spanish football team in a Louis Vuitton case. We’re glad to see that when it isn’t in the hands of sweaty European soccer players, the trophy keeps it luxe.

Fashion news: Robin Kay speaks out about the Holts FWeek breakfast [updated], Canadians are safe shoppers and Shu Uemura to cease U.S. operations
Allegations made by models of Terry Richardson‘s inappropriate behaviour haven’t seemed to effect his career or his reputation, as the photographer was back to work, shooting model Doutzen Kroes for Vogue in Miami yesterday. [Vogue UK]
FDCC prez Robin Kay spoke out at yesterday’s Holt Renfrew‘s media breakfast, which showcased work from five Canadian designers who don’t show at LG Fashion Week. (Watch for our coverage of the event later today.) Holts brought in Vogue writer Mark Holgate, who will not be attending the main event at the Allstream Centre [UPDATE: Mark Holgate attended the IZMA show on Sunday night with Holt Renfrew’s communications director, Moira Wright.] Kay told the Toronto Star: “Holt Renfrew is a sponsor – with their largesse they should have made a point of bringing that gentleman to the site to see that we are a fashion week and to see designers he may not have heard of. That’s a sponsor’s duty and responsibility.” For Holts’ part, their fashion VP Barbara Atkin said: ““[Bringing these designers to fashion week] is something we’ve talked about and we are in discussions about.” [Toronto Star, via Toronto Life]
With J.Crew scouting locations and Victoria’s Secret‘s plans to open four north-of-the-49th stores, Canada has become the ‘it’ place for retailers looking to open international stores–because we’re nearby and not that exotic, apparently. Says the Wall Street Journal: “Canadians tend to be slower, steadier shoppers than Americans, with a preference for higher-quality goods and more interest in outdoor looks.” Gotta love the stereotypes, eh. Michael Bay mixes models, helicopters and explosions in his Victoria’s Secret ad
Few things leave us at a loss for words, but this Michael Bay-shot action movie Victoria’s Secret commercial really and truly does. But let’s try: Helicopters. Explosions. Heavy metal. Circus. Knife throwing. Mansion filled with wind. Classic cars. Spiral staircase in the desert.
Wow.

Fashion news: Miss J is a dad, Serena’s hair is the new “Rachel” and Porsche is suing Crocs
Miss J Alexander has written a book revealing that the former model and current ANTM runway coach extraordinaire has a child. Though he isn’t the biological father (his ex-boyfriend is), Miss J still has a strong presence in the child’s life.[ The Cut]
In other Miss J news, the J stands for Jenkins. Oh, and Coco Rocha walks like “her nose is always running,” Claudia Schiffer was a “fladunkasaurus,” and Cathy Horyn walks like her “back hurts.” We really want to read his book now. [NYT]
Chinese catwalker Liu Wen will be the first Asian model to ever walk in the Victoria’s Secret show, which airs November 19. [The Cut]
