Shop the October 2012 Carly Rae Jepsen cover shoot »The first thing to come out of Carly Rae Jepsen’s mouth after she rushes into Vancouver’s Sugar Studios, fresh off a flight from Los Angeles, is an apology. She wanted to arrive at her first fashion magazine cover shoot early, she tells the crew, but her driver had to “circle around the streets a bit” to shake off the paparazzi. The way she explains the schedule hiccup isn’t blasé, showy or even caustic. Jepsen’s honeyed tone conveys a blend of amazement and excitement that can only come from being nouveau famous. Unlike new wealth, freshly minted fame is not about flaunting what you have, it’s about being humble about what you’re worth.
At 26, the Mission, B.C., native has no reason to be modest right now. Ever since Carly Rae Jepsen’s song “Call Me Maybe” was unleashed last year, and fortuitously reintroduced to the Twittersphere by Justin Bieber (Jepsen is signed to Bieber’s U.S. label), the track has taken on a career of its own. It became a number one hit in 37 countries, achieving the kind of global success that has Lady Gaga going, well, gaga over it (Mother Monster tweeted “I’m coming after you” to Jepsen).
As of press time, Jepsen’s flirty anthem is 2012’s longest-reigning chart topper on the Billboard Hot 100. Armed with a lyrical hook that brings to mind the mania of Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Outta My Head,” Jepsen’s synth-laced cut is so omnipresent that nobody from her team calls it by its name. It’s referred to as “the song.” Will she be singing “the song” on The Tonight Show? Does she know Will Ferrell is protesting “the song” right now? Oh, my God, did you see what the hot guys on the baseball team from Harvard did with “the song”?

October 2012: Letter from the editor
The speed with which Carly Rae Jepsen has shot to stardom has been positively meteoric. Between the time we started discussing a cover and the actual shoot, she became a household name. Jepsen was tailed by paparazzi when she arrived at the Vancouver studio where Gabor Jurina was set up to photograph her; features editor Elio Iannacci had to post gatekeepers at the door to keep them at bay.
But the singer couldn’t have been more sweet, and eagerly explored her sexy side in a body-con McQ by Alexander McQueen dress and leopard-spotted Louboutin pumps. “Whenever Gabor showed her which angles were working best for her, she was happy to go back and perfect the pose,” says stylist Zeina Esmail.
Photography is always a collaborative effort, notes Bryan Adams, another Canadian singing superstar. Adams discusses his portraits of Mick Jagger, Daphne Guinness, Amy Winehouse and Lana Del Rey in “Northern Exposure” (page 164). We are left with the impression that despite his fame and fortune, Adams is an artist at heart. This is one VIP parent we can’t imagine buying Dior for his 18-month-old.
But, as Shawna Cohen reports in “Little Luxuries” (page 70), many celebs do. “If the kids look good, they look good. Almost as an accessory,” comments a boutique owner who stocks Lanvin flats from size 2 years. What’s next? Designer diapers?

How to do Carly Rae Jepsen’s MMVA hair and makeup at home! (Did you notice she changed her lipstick colour 3 times?)
Sunday was certainly a big night for Carly Rae Jepsen—the Canadian pop singer won three of the four MMVA awards she was nominated for, performed on stage twice (opening the show with “Call Me Maybe” and later singing “Wild One” with Flo Rida) and did we mention she hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week? Needless to say, there’s no one who better deserved her multiple wardrobe and makeup changes throughout the show. To get to the bottom of the singer’s style, we spoke to Veronica Chu, who was Jepsen’s hairstylist and makeup artist at the award show.

The scoop on Carly Rae Jepsen’s MMVA manicure! If there was an award for “Best Nails” she would have won it
Not only did Carly Rae Jepsen sweep last night’s MMVAs, taking home three awards and performing twice—she also took the nail art spotlight away from manicure enthusiast Katy Perry. View the performance photos »Another year, another explosive MMVA street party. This year, some of the biggest names in pop (shout out to those Canadian-made!) took to MuchMusic’s famed Toronto headquarters to delight thousands of screaming fans (and millions watching via the tube) with glitter, champagne showers and more. Co-Hosts LMFAO creeped us out in a partially good, partially bad way as this year’s co-hosts, while everyone from Selena Gomez to Kelly Clarkson to Katy Perry (in butterfly wings, no less) took to the stage. MMVA first-timer Carly Rae Jespen ruled the night with her triple award wins for Video of the Year, MuchMusic.com’s Most Watched Video and the fan-driven UR Fave Video of the Year for “Call Me Maybe.” Oh, and Justin Bieber held a baby (his brother, not his spawn) on the red carpet. NBD.
