Some of the top Fall runway trends made their way deep into red carpet territory tonight, as the A-listers put on Hollywood’s biggest and best parade. Raf Simons is out, while the real Jil might be back in at Jil Sander! What does this mean for Dior? And for our Sander addiction?
It’s in-and-out at Jil Sander camp this week after the German fashion house announced this morning that Raf Simons will be presenting his last collection as creative director this Saturday. The announcement comes amid (double!) speculation that Simons and founder Jil Sander will be making big moves in the near future. Simons has long been […]

Sugar High: Soft pastels and frothy silhouettes are on the menu this spring

From left to right: Ralph Lauren, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Versace Spring 2012. Photography by Peter Stigter. By David Livingstone
Louis Vuitton show for Spring 2012 opened with the tinkling of a music box and the rising of a scrim to reveal a carousel carrying girls in pale dresses on cream-coloured ponies. It might have seemed a saccharine set-up, but such a response could just be a bad case of not getting it. The news of the season is gentle news. That’s what Marc Jacobs got so right at Louis Vuitton. All the white and those whitened pastels—a key colour trend, favoured by both traditionalists such as Ralph Lauren and more experimental types such as Christopher Kane and Hussein Chalayan—might have appeared to be borrowed from a bag of miniature marshmallows. But the candied palette was not there simply to satisfy a sweet tooth. It also appeals to a Bluetooth appetite when dished out in fabrics that are marvels of modern technology—things like foam organza, silk cellophane and laser-cut leatherette. For the theory-minded, it’s tempting to conclude from the fact that we live in times when you see toddlers dressed in skull patterns and infants swaddled in camo-print blankets that it’s only logical their moms should start playing with pink and baby blue.

Vicky B. to the Oscars? Charlize, Gwyneth, and Cameron are all reportedly after the designer for Hollywood’s biggest night

Photography by Mike Marsland/Getty Images If having an Oscar red carpet moment is any indication of a designer (and a celebrity designer at that) making it, then Victoria Beckham has definitely made it. The perennially best-dressed Charlize Theron, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Cameron Diaz are reportedly seeking the designer’s flattering, fitted wears for Hollywood’s biggest night.
A secret source told the Daily Mirror that, “Although it’s a great place to be in, Victoria’s been working day and night to keep up with demand.” So, what will the A-list be wearing? Check out our best guesses!

From the faux bobs at Dior to Christophe Josse’s glitter eyebrows, we present 4 of our favourite beauty trends from couture week

Photography by Peter Stigter Couture week has come to a close and we have a few brief moments to absorb this last showing of Spring trends before moving on to a new season. Next week, Fall 2012 presentations begin in New York (and we’ll be there!) so until then, let’s look back at the beauty from Paris.
While we’ve already fallen in love with the blue nails and eyes at Chanel and wondered if Jean Paul Gaultier’s homage to Amy Winehouse was apropos, there’s much more beauty to obsess over. Indeed, couture week is known for celebrating the avant-garde—what, the faces fully painted in pastel brights at Alexis Mabille didn’t convince you? We scoured the shows and uncovered a handful of new beauty trends you’ll actually want to try at home.

Rose does Joe Fresh! Michelle loves bright nails! Our 4 beauty picks from the Screen Actors Guild Awards
It seemed like many were playing it safe on the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards this weekend. The dresses were pretty, but there was nothing overtly jaw-dropping, and in terms of beauty the trend seemed to lean towards keeping it simple. Dare we say that the stars (and their stylists!) are holding back until the Oscars? We’ll have to wait until February 26 to find out. But until then, here are four looks that managed to stand out:

Michelle Williams’ bright nails! »
Ashlee Simpson’s short and sculpted hair! »

Vancouver It girl: Manjy Sidoo
Editor: Sarah Casselman
Manjy Sidoo’s magnum opus may be motherhood (she has two teenage boys with her hubby David, a former CFL player), but her philanthropic endeavours are a close second. She’s a director at the Sidoo Family Foundation and a board member of the Vancouver Opera (VO), which she joined 10 years ago for the Chanel Gala 2002 fundraiser. Today, she’s a regular participant in VO events (and one of the best-dressed, in her sweeping Oscar de la Renta gowns), such as Purseuasion Designer Bag Auction and Luncheon, and Overture, an onstage dinner she’s co-chairing this year. This intersection of art and fashion inspires her involvement. “Fashion is all around us. It’s hard for me not to have a heightened awareness of my aesthetic surrounding,” she says. “If I see a beautiful dress or antique or piece of art, I have a visceral reaction.”

Afternoon beauty fix: A dry concealer won’t help those dark circles
How can I cover dark circles beneath my eyes without the concealer settling into the creases of my skin? Aside from keeping your skin well moisturized and protected from the sun, one of the best things you can do is use a concealer with a watery texture, opposed to one that’s cakey and thick. An […]

They said/We said: Natalie Portman’s Black Swan co-star (and fellow Jew) Mila Kunis is the new face of Dior Handbags

Photography by Mikael Jansson Dior has signed Mila Kunis as the newest face of its Miss Dior handbags. The campaign, shot by Mikael Jansson, features a very Parisian-chic Kunis in black clothes and a chignon. (But of course.)
The advertisements are set to debut in international editions of Elle, Vogue, and Madame Figaro by January 15, reaching the American monthlies after January 29.
This will be Kunis’ first major ad campaign since she wowed audiences with her stellar performance in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan. And the casting for the ad is an interesting one, if you remember Dior’s scrape with anti-semiticism last year. Kunis’ Black Swan co-star, Natalie Portman, also represents the brand, but threatened to leave the fashion house last March following Galliano’s anti-semitic comments. Despite Galliano’s outbursts, it seems that Dior has a soft spot for Jewish actress-ballerinas.
Perhaps this was Dior’s way of definitively stating that they do not share Galliano’s beliefs. Then again, Kunis was one of the most bankable cover stars of 2011, gracing Cosmopolitan, Elle, GQ, and W mags.
Delphine Arnault, deputy general manager of Dior, told WWD that Kunis’ print campaign would be part of a larger “worldwide media plan.” Does this mean a quirky fashion video of Kunis is in our future? We sure hope so.
