If reports about Anna Wintour wanting this year’s Met Gala to be more exclusive were true, they certainly did not apply to the A-list. Last night’s red carpet was stacked (and we mean stacked) with just about everyone from the recluse to rising star. Surely, it had something to do with the fact that last night was the inaugural Met Gala celebrating the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s renamed Anna Wintour Costume Center. Maybe too, it was just like the rest of us have been trained to understand: The Met Gala is not to be missed.

Honouring oft-forgotten American couturier Charles James, last night’s event was all about 1950s glamour. Its “white tie” guest-list prompted gents like Johnny Depp and Kanye West to wear tails, Zoe Saldana to wear a recreated Michael Kors bustle and both Taylor Swift and Sarah Jessica Parker to take to the stairs with over-the-top Oscar de la Renta trains. Unlike the sometimes cookie cutter Oscars, the Met Gala is a time to break out some real steez and red carpet queen Lupita Nyong’o did just that in a flapper-inspired feathered Prada dress. Perhaps more Poiret than James, the dress made for some serious chatter from both the “for” and “against” camps. Fellow red carpet queen (and queen of life, truly) Rihanna went anti-theme in a sexy stomach-baring Stella McCartney dress which killed, as usual.

Your first time at any international fashion week will teach you a valuable lesson: You need a fur. And not just any Margot Tenenbaum style granny hand-me-down. A fur so intricately patterned, multi-layered and artificially coloured, that it has to be designer. Given its place at the apex of the top Fall 2014 trends, you’d think recessionary times were long gone—it’s virtually everywhere, from a hyper colour mink at Altuzarra to a fluffy red dress at Prada. Wear it with caution or as Dior prescribes, dangle it over your arm like it’s no big d. Let the fur fly, scruples or otherwise.

You would think that after almost a month of Fashion Weeks with intense schedules, endless fashion shows and plenty of travel time, the fashion elite would be running out of things to wear. But the latest batch of street style shots from outside Paris Fashion Week depict anything but. Some of our favourite street style stars were out in full force, wearing their best and brightest, and enjoying all the fashion frivolities.  Clearly the playful vibes from Chanel’s fashion-show-turned-shopping-centre were infectious.

Besties and fellow editors, Giovanna Battaglia and Anna Dello Russo hammed it up for the cameras atop concrete bollards. Just how ADR got up there without rumpling her floor-length Spring 2014 Valentino, we’ll never know. In a coy twist on a virginal long sleeved lace dress, Kate Foley wore a strip of bright red gaffe tape strategically placed as a pseudo censor bar straight from the Preen Fall 2014 show. Several models fresh off of the Chanel runway proudly showed off their free swag courtesy of the label’s shopping aisles. (We’re more than a little jealous of Anya Ziourova’s Chanel doormat…)

Hot Fuzz

It seems as though there hasn’t been a single designer who hasn’t shown fur (real or faux) on the runway. It was looking like the shearling would be the coat of the season, but leopard prints are also gaining ground. Both Chloé and Céline showed calf-grazing versions. Leopard is going to be big news in footwear too. Tabitha Simmons is working with it for the first time and splashed the spots across heels, booties and flats.

Designers are seeing red. Whether it was a full monochromatic look like the fur jacket and wide leg pant at Akris, a big block courtesy of an asymmetrically cut skirt at Dior or a shot of colour from a carefully placed panel at Givenchy, scarlet is shaping up to be one if the most important shades.

Moving away from hyper real photo prints, designers are playing with modified graphic arts. Kenzo is leading the pack with colourful clashing prints, but Acne also debuted psychedelic swirls and Chloé printed black and white waves on skirts and dresses.

Sweater Dressing

This isn’t as simple as pulling on a sweater. Marc Jacobs kicked off the trend in New York, but it’s traveled across the Atlantic too. Phoebe Philo‘s head to toe knit looks complete with tunic and pants were as cozy as it gets at Céline. Kenzo did an embellished version with a swingy skirt and several designers including Balenciaga and Viktor & Rolf have riffed on the classic cable in new ways.

Fringe

I was obsessed with Gucci’s flyaway fringe bags for spring, but it looks like I’ll have a lot more to love come fall. At the Lanvin re-see, I spied long panels of thin strings hanging from colour blocked dresses and elbow length gloves. A day earlier, Roland Mouret cut leather strips on dresses to dance between models’ legs as they walked. Andrew Gn coated gown bodices with strands of beads that swung like fringe. Not to mention all of the feathery effects too (Céline’s coats were particularly stunning). And the shoe showrooms are full of fringe too. Aquazzura‘s Texas-inspired styles and Alexandre Birman‘s veiled heels were standouts.

Life in Paris slows over the weekend to allow for leisurely strolls and sipping coffees in corner cafés, but the shows must go on and fashion’s power players kept pace. Saturday and Sunday’s schedules included some of Paris’ most influential designers including Givenchy, Céline, Chloé and Kenzo. If the last few months have taught us anything where Beyoncé’s concerned, it’s to expect the unexpected. At last Friday’s opening of the European leg of her “Mrs. Carter” tour in Glasgow, Scotland, Queen Bey gave her legion of fans a whole new godly experience by performing an entirely revamped set list, accompanied with a fresh crop of stellar new stage costumes. In a word: Flawless.

Like anything Beyoncé wears, curve-hugging glamour is front and centre in the new range of costumes created by Versace, Givenchy and Greek designer Vrettos Vrettakos.

Did you know that Toronto is home to the world’s only art on film festival? Or that it is in its 11^th year? Probably not. For the past few years, the Reel Artists Film Festival has blown us away with its A-list roster of films, talent and frankly, how underrated it is. This year, RAFF upped the ante yet again by premiering An Economy of Grace, a film about artist Kehinde Wiley and his unique brand of hood-meets-highbrow in pieces that portray African Americans in heroic poses.

At Wednesday night’s opening, the who’s who of Toronto’s art scene fêted the film, hobnobbing with the artist and taking in an onstage Q&A with him and Zoomer editor-in-chief Suzanne Boyd, which focused on the sociological impact his pieces have on his subjects as well as his work with Givenchy.

An Economy of Grace follows Wiley as he creates his first women-only painting series, casting them on the street in Harlem, dressing them in couture gowns and transforming them into large-scale re-imaginations of classic works of art. It also documents the artist’s collaboration with Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci, who created the dresses exclusively for the paintings. “When I thought about the absolute favourite of favourites or what stood for the best of haute couture, it was Givenchy,” said Wiley of the partnership. As current fashion plays so comfortably in the arena of high low, Wiley’s work touches on how once impossible that kind of combination would have been. In the days of great master portraiture (Wiley’s work often draws directly from Titian, Ingres, John Singer Sargent and Napoleon painter Jacques Louis David), subjects would have been those with money, wealth and social stature. They certainly would never have been of colour, something Wiley’s work flips on its head.

If there were one word to sum up the 20^th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, it would be colour. All of our favourite stars opted for a bright flash on the red carpet, with nary a head-to-toe black ensemble in sight. Even Jennifer Lawrence’s Christian Dior Haute Couture column dress was an array of shimmering multi-coloured sequins that changed hues as she moved. Black, it seems, is so 2013.

Also on the darker end of things, Jennifer Garner opted for a custom midnight blue Max Mara gown, in her favourite strapless mermaid silhouette. Dame Helen Mirren once again showed how to look seductive and age appropriate with a gorgeous black gown, lifted with gold foliage embroidery, from the Escada Pre-Fall 2014 collection. The wide sash belt, pop of colour on the lips, and black and gold chandelier earrings all worked together seamlessly. We bow down to the greatness that is Dame Mirren.

Bringing some high-voltage blues to the red carpet were frequent best-dressed list toppers Lupita Nyong’o and Amy Adams, both in killer dresses. Nyong’o’s Gucci column dress featured an embellished neckline that was as unusual as it was jaw dropping. Matched with pared down jewels from Fred Leighton, the actress went on to win Best Supporting Actress for 12 Years A Slave in stunning fashion. Adams’ Antonio Berardi gown was perfectly accented with a coral lip, an embellished waist, and complementary green and blue drop earrings.

Glitter and shimmer are reflecting from all manner of surfaces this season. Metallic mouths, jewel-encrusted eyes, silver-striped cheeks and pewter nails shone on the runways. Apply and wear with sparkly abandon.
