View the Fashion Cares performance and party photos »
The 25th annual M.A.C Fashion Cares gala set off with a bang on Sunday night, with a sequin-suited Elton John performing alongside Janelle Monae, Scissor Sisters, Chantal Kreviazuk and others in support of the the AIDS Committee of Toronto and Elton John AIDS Foundation. Co-chaired by Michael King and Elton John’s husband David Furnish, the show, aptly billed as a night of glitter and light, also featured speeches (and even a little runway work-out) by Linda Evangelista and Dean and Dan Caten of Dsquared.

From the food aisles to Fifth Avenue: Inside Joe Fresh’s New York flagship store and opening party
Last Thursday, the unthinkable happened: A brand born in the aisles of the grocery store became part of the glorious gloss of New York’s Fifth Avenue. But if you know anything about Joe Fresh and its founder Joe Mimran, you know that well, it’s not really that unthinkable at all. Since launching the brand five years ago (and after years of style-propagation via his previous ventures, Club Monaco and Caban), Mimran has brought affordable chicness to the forefront of the Canadian fashion industry. South of the border was the natural next step, and since the brand’s U.S. launch late last summer, its bright and sunny hues have been infiltrating the pages of Teen Vogue, New York Magazine and the like. To boot, the brand has been making its mark on the arts community as well, sponsoring an event during Miami’s Art Basel, and the New Museum’s second triennial exhibit, The Ungovernables.

See all Toronto Fashion Week coverage »Joe Mimran opened his fall show—always among the most hyped and well-attended of Toronto Fashion Week—with a video of Veruschka seducing the camera in 1966’s Blowup, which set the scene for a colourful parade of swinging ’60s three-quarter-sleeve toppers, mini shift dresses, houndstooth prints large and small, and skinny capri pants on homegrown all star models such as Alana Zimmer, Heather Marks, Kate King, and our March issue cover girl, Anaïs Pouliot. Coats were tweedy or high-shine patent, often with faux fur additions so fuzzy, they might have been taken from a teddy. Oversized-cable knits looked cool with neon accents, prints, and patterns, and the finishing touches were jumbo tuques and pointy court pumps with neon orange soles. A flamboyant gent surprised Mimran with a huge bouquet of flowers as he was taking his bow—we concur, the brand deserves to celebrate.

TIFF Partysphere: Bright young things Felicity Jones, Anton Yelchin, and Jessica Chastain at the rooftop Interview and Joe Fresh party
On Tuesday night, Interview, a.k.a. one of New York’s definitively coolest mags, threw down with home-grown megabrand Joe Fresh atop the Spoke Club to celebrate the film “Like Crazy,” alongside its rising stars Felicity Jones (we’ve heard her referred to as the next Carey Mulligan) and Anton Yelchin. Everything was orange-y hued (including the Negroni), which is probably why Jessica Chastain showed up. Or maybe it was to engage in a ginge showdown with also-stunningly-tressed PR gal Alison Lawler-Dean. Despite the slight chill in the air, the patio was packed with minglers, including the inimitable power couple Joe Mimran and Kimberley Newport-Mimran.

TFW diary: Bright and juicy at Joe Fresh
With its debut flagship store opening this spring in The Big Apple and a handful of new flagship stores popping up across Canada, the future continues to look bright for Joe Fresh (and the mastermind behind the label, Joe Mimran, who sported an electric orange scarf at the show). This knock-your-socks-off colour wave lapped into Joe Fresh’s fall 2011 collection too with juicy orange shift dresses and cord belts, crisp blue and rich green outerwear⎯the bracelet length sleeve is back folks, so muster up your inner Jackie O and invest in a pair of elbow length gloves this fall. Oxford shoes dipped in metallic gold and librarian-chic low heels will keep you a step up for fall, while navy blue knits and camel coloured separates continue the classic sportswear streak. And when it comes to reciting your accessories vows, a rich cognac-hued tote bag is the one to have and to hold, forever and ever. Amen.

Joe Mimran’s Barbie look-alike doll even sports velvet slippers
*Sigh* Why must companies tease us by trotting out cult-y items that we want to own, but cannot actually buy? Case in point: Joe Mimran just had a Ken doll made in his image to celebrate Joe Fresh Style’s current line of Barbie merch. The doll has Mimran’s signature hair and is dressed in his signature blazer and open collar shirt and his signature velvet slippers complete with their signature crest. It’s so covetable. And so one-of-a-kind. Boo.

Q&A: Joe Mimran talks about the first Joe Fresh flagship
Hanging out with Irina Lazareanu is what I call a Saturday night well spent. And this is how last weekend played out, when Joe Mimran rolled into town to celebrate the opening of the country’s first freestanding Joe Fresh Style flagship (540 Granville St., 604-681-4200, joe.ca). With him? A handful of Toronto media, Loblaws executives, musicians from Marianas Trench, Divine Brown, The Stereos and Sweet Thing (who gave a free, afternoon street concert to screaming fans), DJ Mia Moretti and electro-violinist Caitlin Moe, and of course, the models—Irina, Arlenis Sosa and Tiiu Kuik. Here’s what he had to say about the store.

TIFF party pics: Pierre Bergé and YSL muses Loulou de la Falaise and Betty Catroux at the premiere of L’amour fou
It is a rare occasion indeed for Torontonians to rub shoulders with a fashion titan like Yves Saint Laurent‘s longtime partner, and co-ounder of YSL Rive Gauche, Pierre Bergé. But rub shoulders they did–an elite group, anyway–at the after party for the world premiere of Pierre Thoretton‘s documentary, L’amour fou. The film, which traces Saint Laurent’s career through the lens of his relationship with Bergé, and the ultimate auctioning off of their collection of art, furniture and objets, features extensive conversations with Bergé, as well as talks with the designer’s muses Loulou de la Falaise and Betty Catroux, who were staples on the Paris fashion scene.

Party pics: Bloor Street comes out for CANFAR
On Wednesday night, Bloor Street threw it’s massive annual fundraising effort for the Canadian Foundation for Aids Research (CANFAR). To reach their $400,000 goal, Bloor Street Entertains turns boutiques all over Toronto’s Yorkville neighborhood in pop-up restos catered by the city’s top chefs. Marc Thuet, Jamie Kennedy and Blu’s Massimo Collavani were just a few […]
