Fall Fashion 2014: 231 photos of the top 10 trends of the season
See the entire Fall fashion 2014 trend report »
From the food aisles to a galaxy far, far away, Fall 2014’s fashion narrative is just as varied as the many women who’ll likely fall for its manifold charms.
Call it the Lorde effect (or blame it fashion’s ever-growing obsession with Game of Thrones), but designers across all four major fashion cities seemed to fall under the dark spell of moody heroines. At Dolce & Gabbana, dresses were made to scrape that forest floor. At Valentino, capes shrouded the wicked and at Rodarte and Preen, Star Wars prints were made for the modern day Princess Leia.

And while normcore may have mounted last season’s defence to street style’s increasing zaniness, Fall fashion 2014 is rife with ways to make statements. Flashbulbs will no doubt capture this season’s array of larger than life outerwear, from the utilitarian parkas on Alexander Wang’s robotic runway to Burberry’s painterly blanket coats. Meanwhile, fur was back with a brightly hued vengeance, ombréd at both Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs, and in Crayola checks at Altuzarra. At Lanvin and Marni, fur was layered in wrap form over everything from short suits to sweatshirts.
This season’s accessories are especially light-hearted, with everything from a McDonalds Happy Meal to a carton of milk inspiring fall fashion 2014’s bags at Moschino and Chanel respectively. There were fur muffs at Tory Burch, crystal-incrusted snoods at Alexander McQueen and knee-highs á la Vivian Ward at Versace and sneakers once again staking their claim at Chanel.
If there ever were a time to pick your poison, it would be now.

Summer 2014 is all about cool blue aquatic looks; here’s how to get the look fast
Find out how to get the look »Glistening skin, post-swim hair and makeup reminiscent of azure Caribbean waters—a tidal wave of oceanic influence is upon us. At 3.1 Phillip Lim, the hair was described as “crustaceous” and “shipwrecked” and skin had a pearlescent glow; retro mermaids wore a wash of aqua eyeshadow at Badgley Mischka; and models on the Band of Outsiders runway had damp, side-parted waves meant to replicate “Jan Brady at the beach.” At Kenzo, the save-the-fish message of the collection was echoed by manicures tipped with white crashing waves, while hair was twisted into a seashell shape at Carolina Herrera for a look that was decidedly uptown. Life’s a beach, even if you’re stuck in the city.

Introducing Kenzodiac: Fashion’s latest reason to be obsessed with astrology
In case you haven’t noticed, astrology has become a major thing within the fashion crowd over the past couple of years. While it was once considered silly to consult the stars (or rather, to consult astrologers who understand the stars) before making big changes in relationships, career and living situations, it’s now completely acceptable—and obviously chic—to do so.
Taking that one step further is Parisian It brand Kenzo, who recently launched Kenzodiac, an astrological site that fuses the stars with fashion (a deliciously intriguing sentence if I’ve ever written one). It features sketches by artist Julien Ceccaldi and offers monthly horoscope readings for each sign about the usual mysteries of life, love, money, career, as well as, duh, fashion.

MTV Movie Awards 2014: Our top 8 picks for best dressed on the red carpet
See our MTV Movie Awards 2014 red carpet picks »
Last night’s MTV Movie Awards was full of shirtless, star-studded surprises. It’s typically one of the most fun shows to watch if you’re into celebrity cameos (last night’s opener had a record 50), F-bombs and zygotes and last night was no different, offering a veritable poo poo platter of all of the above. Cameron Diaz, Kate Upton, Leslie Mann and Nicki Minaj brought the sexy while presenting the awards for best male lead to Josh Hucherson, Zac Efron lost his shirt and Jared Leto made another real talk acceptance speech. Johnny Depp was there too, showing up to preside over the event by presenting the award for best film to the Jennifer Lawrence-less cast of Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
On the red carpet, there were a variety of dressed up and casual looks, ranging from Rihanna’s head to toe lingerie look by Ulyana Sergeenko to Lupita Nyong’o’s kaleidoscopic Spring 2014 Chanel dress.

Your first time at any international fashion week will teach you a valuable lesson: You need a fur. And not just any Margot Tenenbaum style granny hand-me-down. A fur so intricately patterned, multi-layered and artificially coloured, that it has to be designer. Given its place at the apex of the top Fall 2014 trends, you’d think recessionary times were long gone—it’s virtually everywhere, from a hyper colour mink at Altuzarra to a fluffy red dress at Prada. Wear it with caution or as Dior prescribes, dangle it over your arm like it’s no big d. Let the fur fly, scruples or otherwise.
