If reports about Anna Wintour wanting this year’s Met Gala to be more exclusive were true, they certainly did not apply to the A-list. Last night’s red carpet was stacked (and we mean stacked) with just about everyone from the recluse to rising star. Surely, it had something to do with the fact that last night was the inaugural Met Gala celebrating the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s renamed Anna Wintour Costume Center. Maybe too, it was just like the rest of us have been trained to understand: The Met Gala is not to be missed.

Honouring oft-forgotten American couturier Charles James, last night’s event was all about 1950s glamour. Its “white tie” guest-list prompted gents like Johnny Depp and Kanye West to wear tails, Zoe Saldana to wear a recreated Michael Kors bustle and both Taylor Swift and Sarah Jessica Parker to take to the stairs with over-the-top Oscar de la Renta trains. Unlike the sometimes cookie cutter Oscars, the Met Gala is a time to break out some real steez and red carpet queen Lupita Nyong’o did just that in a flapper-inspired feathered Prada dress. Perhaps more Poiret than James, the dress made for some serious chatter from both the “for” and “against” camps. Fellow red carpet queen (and queen of life, truly) Rihanna went anti-theme in a sexy stomach-baring Stella McCartney dress which killed, as usual.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. After a successful season as the face of Louis Vuitton handbags, Michelle Williams is back with an even prettier campaign for Spring 2014. Photographed by Peter Lindbergh, the shots depict the actress in a myriad of springy modes: in pastel lipstick, on a bike, in a raglan tee. She’s beautiful; the bags are beautiful… what more can I say? Maybe just that “I don’t want to wait (for these new spring arrivals…)”

Your first time at any international fashion week will teach you a valuable lesson: You need a fur. And not just any Margot Tenenbaum style granny hand-me-down. A fur so intricately patterned, multi-layered and artificially coloured, that it has to be designer. Given its place at the apex of the top Fall 2014 trends, you’d think recessionary times were long gone—it’s virtually everywhere, from a hyper colour mink at Altuzarra to a fluffy red dress at Prada. Wear it with caution or as Dior prescribes, dangle it over your arm like it’s no big d. Let the fur fly, scruples or otherwise.

A new era dawned on the final day of Paris Fashion Week, with Nicolas Ghesquière’s first collection for Louis Vuitton rebalancing the high-design equilibrium offset when he ditched Balenciaga back in November 2012. For Ghesquière devouts, the 48-look collection of pared-back cool girl clothes was like lifeblood. For him, I imagine it was the sartorial echo of Kelis’s sarcasm-filled anthem “Copy Cat” (“Oh come here, copycat! You’re my puppet, you know I love it! You could do it, I did it already”). You know, the Parisian way of saying “Step off, b*tch.”

There’s no comparing yesterday’s show with Marc Jacobs’ glittering spring ode to showgirls, and while choosing between the two would be fashion’s Sophie’s Choice, it looks like someone did: Jeurgen Teller. The German photographer long associated with Marc Jacobs ads turned down the Spring 2014 campaign starring Miley Cyrus, and instead shot an off the cuff lookbook for Ghesquière’s Vuitton collection entitled “A Dozen Girls.” The photographs feature a sampling of the collection on models including longstanding Ghesquière favourite Liya Kebede. Like the show, the photographs are, in a word, flawless.

Paris Fashion Week came to a close for Fall 2014 yesterday with the last step strutted down the Hermès runway. With hotly anticipated designer debuts (for the record, Nicolas Ghesquiere knocked it out of the park at Louis Vuitton), celebrity-studded front rows (Rihanna made the rounds), splashy parties and a little luxe grocery shopping thrown in for good measure, it was a week filled with memorable moments. As FASHION‘s market editor, my eye is constantly scanning for the must-have items we’ll want to fill our closets with come fall. In that spirit, here is my Paris-inspired edit of the top 10 pieces to add to your shopping list when ushering in the next season.

Fashion week is a little like Groundhog Day, isn’t it? Just as you get used to this season’s It bag, you’re thrust into the eye of another must-have storm. A month before we prepare to do it all over again, we look back at Spring 2014 and recount the best looks, most memorable moments and juiciest gossip from the front lines of fashion week. Capping off a year in style always seems so, for lack of a better word, crazy. With just about a meme a minute and the web’s proclivity for hyperbole (we’re guilty), there seem to have been so many “best moments ever.” Many of those moments involved the 10 influencers on this list, which helps. But many of them, like this, this and this will just live in our mind for all eternity until we fixate on something else. Meanwhile, here’s who we think was at the top of their game in 2013.

When I was growing up, I used to visit my grandmother in Palm Beach, where she wintered in a conch-pink pseudo Spanish-style condo called (accurately) La Bonne Vie. My favourite activity was grocery shopping at Palm Beach’s Publix—a glamorized supermarket washed a bunny-nose pink with valet parking and bougainvillea-swathed archways. Here, tycoons with Hermès-orange suntans and manses on Billionaire’s Row shuffled through the aisles dressed in silken Persian pyjamas and monogrammed velvet bedroom slippers, carts full of crab salad, their long-suffering chauffeurs waiting outside in purring Bentleys. Wearing pyjamas outside of the bedroom has historically been the habit of the egregiously wealthy, the eccentric, the hyper-medicated on day passes—and the freelance writer.
