With the end of fashion week in Toronto marking the close of Spring 2014 show season, it’s time we looked back at all the trends that emerged. As much as the runway sets the pace for what’s to come for the top Spring 2014 trends, the streets play a major role as show-going trendsetters give us the relatable breakdown of how to wear what’s hot next season. Prints take two spots on our top Spring 2014 trends list through those with a painterly quality and those influenced by international cultures. At Hérmes, Rousseau-inspired water lily florals were printed on luxurious fabrics while at Diane Von Furstenberg, dresses and skirts depicting an African wilderness roared. As for fashionable time travel, prepare to keep reminiscing about the youthful 1990s, which haven’t ceased to get reincarnated season after season. Wednesday was a busy day in Paris, with Hermès and Miu Miu’s stellar collections closing out a month of Spring 2014 fashion shows, and Marc Jacobs bowing out as creative director of Louis Vuitton. In a tour de fashion force, many stylish individuals came out for the closing shows.

Again, we saw the black and white trend in full swing and many of our stylish ladies were channeling it with their own interpretative spin. Overlays of blooming floral prints blended with exquisite tailoring and funky textures were just the fun decals needed to make heads turn. Miroslava Duma made her mark with a brilliant white, structured jacket with cinched waistline that oozed femininity. The classic mid-century design was ushered into the 21st century with a funky, bold rooster print.

In a combination of trends, others expressed their penchant for soft pink pastels in a sexy slinky, boudoir style dress. Coupled with a sharp, plaid overcoat and complete with metallics dancing at the bottom of the jacket, it was the perfect balance of femininity and fierceness made appropriate for the city and not just the bedroom.

Earlier today in Paris, sisters Dakota and Elle Fanning sat front row at Louis Vuitton’s Spring 2014 show to see Marc Jacobs’ final collection for the fashion house. The Fanning girls, who both appeared in past campaigns for Marc Jacobs’ own namesake brand, go tête-à-tête in today’s best dressed feature.

Dakota Fanning wore a floor grazing black dress of sheer lace layers from the Louis Vuitton Resort 2014 collection. Her accessories included a black monogrammed LV clutch and black open toe sandals. Mimicking her sister, Elle Fanning picked her look from the same collection, appearing leggy in an all white artfully embroidered mini skirt and a matching loose long sleeved top. Her pick was a great contrast to her sister’s all black and her teal wedge sandals added just the right pop of colour to her all frosty look. Dakota loosely tied her hair while Elle let hers hang on her shoulders. Both girls went for simple makeup with a rosy lipstick, Dakota’s was slightly matte and Elle’s glossy.

To say that punk influenced the fall runways is an understatement; the late-’70s subculture bred from anti-establishment rock ’n’ roll dominated many collections. Aside from the tartan, vinyl, chains and studs, and the faux piercings on just one of the models’ lobes—a page ripped right out of the CBGB style guide—another trend rose from those anarchic ashes: choppy haircuts.

“Punk is an idea that was floating around,” Sam McKnight said backstage at Fendi, where he created haute fox-fur mohawks a few days after engineering a similar long-on-top, short-on-the-sides optical illusion at Clements Ribeiro.

“It might have been something in the air,” says Redken creative consultant Guido Palau of the punk theme, “but it wasn’t planned.” Other influences led him to create short styles at Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton and Jean Paul Gaultier—not least fashion’s fickle nature. “Designers see girls with long hair, and they get a little despondent. Sometimes they just want that different character, the kind of girl that would cut her hair.” Palau dates the move away from long, luxe locks to January 2013, when he cut over 40 wigs into gamine pixies for Raf Simons’s Spring 2013 Dior Haute Couture show. “Raf really wanted what that brings to an outfit—what that brings to a dress.”

Last night, two of Hollywood’s biggest accented stars descended upon TIFF 2013 for the world premiere of The Railway Man, a psychological wartime drama starring the ever-dreamy Colin Firth as a World War Two POW, War Horse’s Jeremy Irvine as his younger self and Nicole Kidman as his wife. For the premiere at Toronto’s Roy Thompson Hall, Firth and his IRL wife, Livia Firth looked real cute-like as they exchanged glances and posed for a crowd of adoring fans. A sans-Keith Urban Nicole Kidman stunned in a black form-fitting Altuzarra pantsuit with lace detailing, Louis Vuitton pumps and drop silver and black earrings. Accenting her look with a bright raspberry lip, Kidman looked as iconic as ever with her signature milky white skin, pool blue eyes and strawberry blonde hair tied tightly in a low chignon.

And while we’re talking fashion, can we just get a hell yes for Jeremy Irvine? He’s real haute, and by that we mean hot in a fashion-y way. Just look at those chiseled features in this Vogue photo shoot alongside Arizona Muse from 2011. He’s a fragrance front man in the making, if we dare call that first.

For the fashion-minded folk, fall is the time to go big or go home. It’s the time to fantasize about impossibly elegant wardrobes full of designer duds so delicious that they only exist in your dreams. We’re all about perpetuating fantasy, and today, we’re doing just that with the help of Los Angeles-based and Toronto-born illustrator Jamie Lee Reardin. Known for her leggy drawings of fashion icons for Moda Operandi, V Magazine and Dior Beauty, Reardin took her usual pencils to the next level by illustrating five of Fall 2013’s strongest looks using the insanely cool Windows app, Fresh Paint. The app, which we discovered on HP’s light as a feather Envy x2 tablet while on a trip to Stockholm with Windows earlier this year, allows you to paint on the screen, literally, with the use of sensor-induced paintbrush. It’s like using an oil canvas, but easier!

Though she dominated just a sliver of time at Andy Warhol’s Factory in the sixties, Edie Sedgwick’s platinum blond bob, magpie style and tragic penchant for the excess has transfixed designers and artists alike long since her death by drug overdose in 1971. This season, Sedgwick is back into the spotlight thanks to perennial cool maker Marc Jacobs, who opened his Spring 2013 collection with one so unquestionably Edie look: a simple striped black and white T-shirt worn over hot pants, a platinum blond bob and low slung kitten heels. The look transformed for Fall 2013, with boudoir ready looks hitting the runways over and over at Louis Vuitton and Saint Laurent.

The original Poor Little Rich Girl splashed onto the art scene starring in the Warhol-directed at film of the same name in 1965, and quickly deemed a “youthquaker” by Diana Vreeland, then editor of Vogue. She entered icon territory when rumoured paramour Bob Dylan left traces of her within “Just Like a Woman,” and “Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat.”

Sedgwick embodied the freewheeling sixties with her more is more approach to layering fur and leopard print over striped T-shirts (worn simply as dresses) while accessorizing with shoulder length chandelier earrings, exaggerated mod eye makeup and false lashes. Since, everyone from Courtney Love to Agyness Deyn and most recently Emma Watson has replicated her style. She’s become an inspirational mainstay over the years, re-appearing every few seasons in a new form at Burberry, Proenza Schouler and Dior Couture and more. Even Sofia Coppola fell under the spell, with a onetime capsule collection designed as an ode to Sedgwick in 1994. Sedgwick’s popularity reached fever pitch a few years back with the 2006 biopic Factory Girl starring Sienna Miller, whose own style was bound to Sedgwick’s at the time.
