From the food aisles to a galaxy far, far away, Fall 2014’s fashion narrative is just as varied as the many women who’ll likely fall for its manifold charms.
Call it the Lorde effect (or blame it fashion’s ever-growing obsession with Game of Thrones), but designers across all four major fashion cities seemed to fall under the dark spell of moody heroines. At Dolce & Gabbana, dresses were made to scrape that forest floor. At Valentino, capes shrouded the wicked and at Rodarte and Preen, Star Wars prints were made for the modern day Princess Leia.

And while normcore may have mounted last season’s defence to street style’s increasing zaniness, Fall fashion 2014 is rife with ways to make statements. Flashbulbs will no doubt capture this season’s array of larger than life outerwear, from the utilitarian parkas on Alexander Wang’s robotic runway to Burberry’s painterly blanket coats. Meanwhile, fur was back with a brightly hued vengeance, ombréd at both Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs, and in Crayola checks at Altuzarra. At Lanvin and Marni, fur was layered in wrap form over everything from short suits to sweatshirts.
This season’s accessories are especially light-hearted, with everything from a McDonalds Happy Meal to a carton of milk inspiring fall fashion 2014’s bags at Moschino and Chanel respectively. There were fur muffs at Tory Burch, crystal-incrusted snoods at Alexander McQueen and knee-highs á la Vivian Ward at Versace and sneakers once again staking their claim at Chanel.
If there ever were a time to pick your poison, it would be now.

At the end of part 1 of On the Road, Jack Kerouac’s 1957 novel about freedom, self-discovery and the American experience, Sal Paradise—a desperately bored and mildly depressed writer who sets off from New York City in search of adventure and inspiration out West—arrives in Hollywood by bus on a dusty autumn morning. Having abandoned the East of his youth along with a sorry half-written manuscript, he arrives, after weeks of dreamy anticipation, in the West of his future: the glittering California coast. “I looked greedily out the window: stucco houses and palms and drive-ins, the whole mad thing, the ragged promised land, the fantastic end of America.” For Paradise, Calif., is the ultimate American mecca—endlessly inspiring, always changing, forever new.
It’s a sentiment that still rings true 50-plus years later. In fashion, Hedi Slimane is the industry’s Pied Piper of California dreaming. The French designer has made Los Angeles his home, his muse and the subject of much of his work, from his 2011 photography exhibition, California Song, which explores Americana via L.A., to his recent collections for Saint Laurent, which have channelled everything from California grunge to 1980s Sunset Strip. “I secretly love that the common perception of L.A. is shallowness,” Slimane told Style.com in 2010. “From the counterculture’s heritage of the ’60s and ’70s to the rise of Silicon Valley in the ’80s, from the Hollywood dream machine to the music industry majors, from Californian art to architecture, healthy lifestyle and food, California does rule the village.”

Kim Kardashian is all about the unexpected lately. Riding the high of her current Vogue cover, she’s been flexing in many things other than her signature form-fitting look. Earlier this week at the star-studded event in support of California congressional candidate Marianne Williamson, Kardashian stepped out in a perfectly-executed menswear look by Paris-based label Faith Connection. Equal parts slick and asset baring, the all-black (everything) jumpsuit and tuxedo jacket really hit the menswear nail on the head.

Paris Fashion Week came to a close for Fall 2014 yesterday with the last step strutted down the Hermès runway. With hotly anticipated designer debuts (for the record, Nicolas Ghesquiere knocked it out of the park at Louis Vuitton), celebrity-studded front rows (Rihanna made the rounds), splashy parties and a little luxe grocery shopping thrown in for good measure, it was a week filled with memorable moments. As FASHION‘s market editor, my eye is constantly scanning for the must-have items we’ll want to fill our closets with come fall. In that spirit, here is my Paris-inspired edit of the top 10 pieces to add to your shopping list when ushering in the next season.

Over lunch today with the team from Chanel‘s Canadian press office, we couldn’t help rehashing the extravagant spectacle we’d just been lucky enough to witness from the front row. The full grocery store set up included fresh vegetable and cheese stands, along with aisles and aisles of canned goods, cleaning products, cupboard staples and bathroom essentials. More than 400 different products had been assembled and branded with the double Cs and Karl’s witty bon mots (only Chanel can get away with “sacs plus belle” garbage bags and 50% markup posters). This house in particular, has always led the pack with its devotion to creating a lasting impression through a full sensory experience. More and more designers are jumping on the bandwagon, hoping to have editors, buyers and shoppers create emotional attachments to their brands. In a week devoted to clothes, theatrics aren’t necessary, but a fun way to stand out from the pack and further promote your seasonal message. Here are this week’s top shows that pushed the envelope with memorable antics:

There is tons of talk about fabric this season. Thick chunky knits are everywhere at Paris Fashion Week, with the knit pant quickly becoming a key piece for Fall 2014. Rich velvets in romantic shades of burgundy to soft rose have been spotted at Nina Ricci and Elie Saab. Sheer silk chiffons have revealed everything from legs and backs to arms and décolletage, and lace is cropping up in nearly every collection as a full-on feature or a just hint of sex appeal. But what are designers doing with those fabrics to keep them feeling fresh? Lets take a minute to examine the prints story. It seems as though designers are divided into two different camps: the florals and the optic prints.

BAFTAs 2014: Our top 5 best dressed on the red carpet
While the rest of us were glued to the screens watching the Olympics and enjoying our long weekend, our friends across the pond were in a star-studded tizzy. The BAFTAs were held on Sunday night at the Royal Opera House in London and the place was lit up with major star-wattage.
Lupita Nyong’o, despite losing out Best Supporting Actress to an absent-Jennifer Lawrence, won the red carpet last night in a stunning Christian Dior Couture gown. The lively green colour was perfectly set off against her skin and gold accessories, and was topped with a flash of magenta lipstick. Despite last week’s more-than-unfortunate outfit, Uma Thurman proved she’s still got it in a breathtaking navy-blue Atelier Versace strapless column dress and diamond choker. With such a striking silhouette, there was no need to clutter it with accessories and frills—Uma is back in our good books with this one. Angelina Jolie hasn’t been on many red carpets of late, but when she turns up, you know it’s going to be good. Wearing a Saint Laurent tux and perfectly matched with hubby and nominee Brad Pit, Jolie looked every bit the bombshell she is with a seductively undone bowtie and wavy locks pushed to one side.
