While our street style shots have captured an abundance of colour on the streets of New York, it seems that all-black is the dominant trend in the celebrity-filled front row. Case in point: Katie Holmes and Anna Kendrick. Holmes has been working the NYFW circuit for a few years now, whereas Kendrick is quickly becoming a front row staple at this season’s shows. While they have yet to sit side by side , their style is certainly in tandem.

At last night’s Donna Karan Fall 2014 show—which was also the label’s 30^th anniversary—Katie Holmes switched up her usually demure style with a sexy black Donna Karan outfit. Comprised of a fitted leather bodice and flowing, sheer black skirt it was a departure from the city-casual looks she’s become known for. (Speaking of, her Holmes and Yang label doesn’t seem to be showing this season. Hmm.) The actress kept her hair simple with a tousled, natural wave and her makeup was at a minimum—very much in line with her campaign looks for Bobbi Brown. While Suri would have been an excellent addition to her outfit, Holmes looked like she was enjoying her solo night out and spent much of the show chatting with British singer Rita Ora.

With Paris Fashion Week ending our month long preview of all things Spring 2014, it’s time we gushed over the shoes that accompanied all that we are dying to wear in the coming season.

Femininity reigned supreme on the runway through Balenciaga, Dior and Roland Mouret’s take on the stiletto. Dior’s complexly inter woven straps would make any shoe addict salivate. At Balmain, our impending full coverage boots will shed a few layers and appear as heeled boots with varying dotted sheer and embellished cage finishes. While we saw Saint Laurent’s fall styles embrace the studded and spiked appeal of punk’s aesthetic, Junya Watanabe clung onto the trend for his Spring 2014 shoes with a menacing ankle boot. Enviable green snakeskin heels and platform chunky heels were seen at Gucci and Michael Kors respectively. Spring is incomplete without feather embellished flats as seen at Rochas.

A couple days into New York Fashion Week, we were pretty sure crop tops were trending for spring, and now that we’re more than halfway through the week, well let’s just say it would almost be easier to list the shows that didn’t cop a crop on the runway this season. We continued to see model midriff everywhere from Tibi, Tommy Hilfiger and Prabal Gurung for ICB to Vera Wang, Narciso Rodriguez and Rodarte. Just to name a few!

LIQUID METALLICS

The metallics trend comes back every year but this season the approach is less edgy futuristic, more silky, sheeny and sophisticated. Gold and silver lamé skirts at Altuzzara dressed up body hugging henleys, and a shiny lace print skirt and jacket look was pure uptown elegance at Tory Burch. Meanwhile, a psychedelic oil-slick effect upped the interest on a shiny metallic coat at Marc by Marc Jacobs.

Vivid pastels and chalky brights are lighting up the runways for spring. DKNY showed outfits in highlighter hues of pink, yellow and turquoise, Jeremy Laing took inspiration from sidewalk chalk for his collection of Malibu-ready looks, and Prabal Gurung and Oscar de la Renta pumped up the volume on pastels for posh eveningwear. Even J.Crew and Calla got into the act with surf-inspired, California brights.

Sport luxe has been in the air for the past couple of seasons but with so many designers embracing the athletic look, consider Spring 2014 it’s official coming out party. At DKNY windbreakers, racer tanks and track pants raced down the runway, while VPL went all the way active with running tights, technical t-shirts and workout gear constructed from water-repellant wicking fabrics. Even Vera Wang dabbled in sport chic with crop tops, technical mesh and zip-up track jackets.

From sheer materials and mesh fabrics to open weave sweaters and frosty latex layers, designers are hinting suggestively at skin for spring. At the intricate end of the spectrum, laser cut details gave designers another more embellished way of exploring the idea. Tory Burch layered lattice-cut leathers over spring knits, Alexander Wang lasered his own name onto everything from pleated skirts and dresses to jackets and gloves, and Threeasfour laser-cut complex geometrical shapes into layered silks to create a 3D effect.

From Singapore to New York, in just a few short weeks the new Resort 2014 collections have taken us from one side of the planet to the other. So far, the collections are getting us excited for those fictitious rising temperatures designers seem to believe exist in January.

Both Tory Burch and Moschino’s Cheap and Chic lines kept things above-the-knee, offering a selection of short shorts and playful minis. Burch’s Moroccan influenced collection featured an exotic array of colourful vacation-ready prints while Moschino Cheap and Chic amped up the fun factor with floral prints and tie-dyes. On the runway at Christian Dior an equally flashy collection featured florals, lace and ladylike silhouettes not to mention intense colour blocking.

New York Fashion Week is full of sparkling moments, and any magpie worth her shiny nest knows how to spot them. Take Tory Burch’s Fall 2013 show, held in one of the opulent salons at The Pierre Hotel. Crystal chandeliers, gilded sconces and the plushest of carpets made for a very luxe start to the day.
