Fall Fashion 2014: 231 photos of the top 10 trends of the season
See the entire Fall fashion 2014 trend report »
From the food aisles to a galaxy far, far away, Fall 2014’s fashion narrative is just as varied as the many women who’ll likely fall for its manifold charms.
Call it the Lorde effect (or blame it fashion’s ever-growing obsession with Game of Thrones), but designers across all four major fashion cities seemed to fall under the dark spell of moody heroines. At Dolce & Gabbana, dresses were made to scrape that forest floor. At Valentino, capes shrouded the wicked and at Rodarte and Preen, Star Wars prints were made for the modern day Princess Leia.

And while normcore may have mounted last season’s defence to street style’s increasing zaniness, Fall fashion 2014 is rife with ways to make statements. Flashbulbs will no doubt capture this season’s array of larger than life outerwear, from the utilitarian parkas on Alexander Wang’s robotic runway to Burberry’s painterly blanket coats. Meanwhile, fur was back with a brightly hued vengeance, ombréd at both Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs, and in Crayola checks at Altuzarra. At Lanvin and Marni, fur was layered in wrap form over everything from short suits to sweatshirts.
This season’s accessories are especially light-hearted, with everything from a McDonalds Happy Meal to a carton of milk inspiring fall fashion 2014’s bags at Moschino and Chanel respectively. There were fur muffs at Tory Burch, crystal-incrusted snoods at Alexander McQueen and knee-highs á la Vivian Ward at Versace and sneakers once again staking their claim at Chanel.
If there ever were a time to pick your poison, it would be now.

From a lingerie lover to a denim devotee, we meet fashion’s most obsessed collectors
After travelling the globe for seven years in search of a coveted Birkin to add to her 200-plus bag collection, Jenniffer Proskiw finally tracked one down in San Diego. “I went to boutiques in Paris, New York, Capri, Venice, Saint Maarten, St. Barth’s, Argentina—they all said no,” recalls the Calgary-based realtor. “I called the Hermès store in San Diego and the salesperson said, ‘If you can be here in person, I may have something.’ I know it sounds silly, but I was so excited to get my hands on one, I was shaking. When you open it up and smell that leather, when you see the handiwork—it’s something you want to look after and love.”
Fashion collectors like Proskiw—who obsessively collect a specific type of clothing or accessory—are a rare but growing breed. You probably know a shopping addict or two, but serious collectors are interested in more than the high a spree provides; a deeper passion fuels their spending. Many don’t even wear their purchases, instead displaying them like precious works of art.
Proskiw has built an entire closet and library in her new home around that premise. She plans to display her favourite handbags, including a Judith Leiber pearl- and crystal-encrusted peacock clutch that’s never left its dust bag and a Christian Dior evening bag that once belonged to Elizabeth Taylor (she woke up at 6 a.m. to bid on it the day Taylor’s estate was auctioned off at Christie’s in New York). Proskiw also collects eyewear—nearly 200 pairs, including prescription Dolce & Gabbana ski goggles.

Mulberry launches Tessie, a more affordable (ish), equestrian-inspired line
See Mulberry’s Tessie collection here »
In the first step toward more affordable accessories, British fashion house, Mulberry has launched a lower priced handbag line inspired by equestrian saddlery.
The Tessie collection features a hobo, clutch, tote and satchel which feature soft leather detailing in either oxblood, poppy, oak or black with belt buckles and straps. Most importantly, the Tessie collection will range between $860 and $1,190, a marked difference from the brand’s typical pricing, which usually begins around $1,300 for the same size.
This new line comes after a rather difficult time for Mulberry, which issued two recent profit warnings and reported falling share prices, on top of its loss of its former CEO, Bruno Guillion. Not to mention, the brand’s notable no-show at February’s London Fashion Week after Emma Hill, the brand’s former creative director left the company.

See the top Fall 2014 trend slideshow »
Your first time at any international fashion week will teach you a valuable lesson: You need a fur. And not just any Margot Tenenbaum style granny hand-me-down. A fur so intricately patterned, multi-layered and artificially coloured, that it has to be designer. Given its place at the apex of the top Fall 2014 trends, you’d think recessionary times were long gone—it’s virtually everywhere, from a hyper colour mink at Altuzarra to a fluffy red dress at Prada. Wear it with caution or as Dior prescribes, dangle it over your arm like it’s no big d. Let the fur fly, scruples or otherwise.

Fashion on film: The 9 best cinematic style moments of 2013
While red carpet celebrities continue to be the ambassadors of choice for luxury brands, big studio film-making was bound to get a little haute with their marketing tie-ins this year, resulting in some of the best on-screen fashion moments we’ve seen in ages. Prada got behind The Great Gatsby and Alexander McQueen dressed Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Meanwhile, Blue Jasmine’s many alcohol-fueled meltdowns were accessorized in everything from Hermès to Louis Vuitton.
Here, we take a look back at the year in cinematic fashion and count down the 9 best fashion on film moments of 2013. There were plenty to choose from:

Street Style, Paris: Gorgeous girls outside fashion week
See the street style from Paris »
Wednesday was a busy day in Paris, with Hermès and Miu Miu’s stellar collections closing out a month of Spring 2014 fashion shows, and Marc Jacobs bowing out as creative director of Louis Vuitton. In a tour de fashion force, many stylish individuals came out for the closing shows.
Again, we saw the black and white trend in full swing and many of our stylish ladies were channeling it with their own interpretative spin. Overlays of blooming floral prints blended with exquisite tailoring and funky textures were just the fun decals needed to make heads turn. Miroslava Duma made her mark with a brilliant white, structured jacket with cinched waistline that oozed femininity. The classic mid-century design was ushered into the 21st century with a funky, bold rooster print.
In a combination of trends, others expressed their penchant for soft pink pastels in a sexy slinky, boudoir style dress. Coupled with a sharp, plaid overcoat and complete with metallics dancing at the bottom of the jacket, it was the perfect balance of femininity and fierceness made appropriate for the city and not just the bedroom.
