What’s in your bag, Harley Viera-Newton? » Last week, one of fashion’s coolest It girls took time out from spinning at Chanel, fronting a Gucci lookbook and collaborating with Dior Beauty to close Rudsak‘s 20th anniversary show during Toronto Fashion Week. A few hours before the show, we got to be ultimate creeps, rummaging inside […]

Jane Aldridge has the designer shoe game on lock. Her wildly popular blog, Sea of Shoes, has documented her favourite purchases and pairs since 2008, landing her on the pages of Vanity Fair and at dinner tables with Karl Lagerfeld. So it’s fitting that we caught up with the red-headed blogger at Holt Renfrew Yorkdale, to celebrate the launch of the newly-revamped shoe hall. Naturally, she was advising fellow footwear lovers on pre-Christmas purchases and posing for photo opps with fans. (As for Aldridge’s own shoes, open toe Jerome C. Rousseau cage booties are a new favourite. “I’ve been wearing these tons, actually, ever since I got them,” she said.)

Since the launch of her blog, Song of Style, back in 2008, Los Angeles-based blogger Aimee Song has become one of the blogosphere’s most beloved. With her penchant for bright colour combos, positivity and long flowing locks, she’s built an empire of page views, Instagram likes and Facebook fans. She’s turned all that into several collaborations with brands like Michael Kors, 7 for all Mankind and now Canadian eCommerce site, eLuxe. The 6-piece capsule collection ($45-$75, eluxe.ca) features logo T-shirts and distressed sweatshirts all emblazoned with “Do Epic Chic” and “VoiLÁ.” “I’m always about positive sayings,” she says. “I always feel like if you’re positive in the morning, you wake up saying ‘Oh my gosh, today is going to be a great day,’ then, everything is gonna be great! And I thought if I was going to do ‘chic’ then I’m going to make it epic, so why not, ‘Do Epic Chic’?”

While Song was in town last week (wearing the new Chanel chain link booties, we might add), we sifted through her Michael Kors bag and found plenty of the bloggers go-to items. They were all epically chic.

Katie Boland ranks high on our list of young Canadians worth keeping an eye on. In the past few years the Toronto-based actress had made waves with notable roles including one alongside Kat Dennings in the 2010 flick Daydream Nation and in her own web series Long Story, Short (which she wrote and co-produced, by the way). The striking brunette, who has much to be excited about with a role on the new CW series Reign, stopped by our offices to give us an uncensored look at what she carries in her everyday bag. A self-professed iPhone addict, who admits she can’t live without eyeliner and is constantly on the hunt for the perfect red lipstick, is refreshingly down to earth and surprisingly low-maintenance (lipstick, Visa and phone is all that she brings with her to red carpet events). We got up close and personal with Boland’s must-have items as she let us peruse through her purse.

For those of us who came of fashionable age by the television set in Canada, Jeanne Beker is it. Trailblazing the industry since the launch of FashionTelevision in 1985, she is without a doubt the country’s most recognizably fabulous face. Known for her bestie status interviews with the likes of Karl Lagerfeld, Beker has often been referred to as pioneer, renegade, genius and trendsetter—-they’d all be accurate. Her omnipresent fashion presence has inspired many careers and since FT’s tearful end last year, she hasn’t stopped. Beker still covers major fashion events for E! News and designs not one but two collection, Edit by Jeanne Beker work wear and Fysh by Jeanne Beker optical.

Photographed while on the set of our cover shoot, these snaps reveal Lovato’s biggest makeup obsession: “I carry a lot of concealers [and] powders because I love to have clean glowing skin, but the secret is to make sure you wash it off every night to keep your skin clear!” she said.

If there were an award for Toronto’s most fashionable twins, Samantha and Caillianne Beckerman would win it year after year. The identical duo’s love for a kaleidoscopic magpie blend of designer duds has not only become a staple on the Toronto fashion scene, but on the web as well, where they boast a cool 44,000 Instagram fans. To boot, the sisters are H&M’s official fashion bloggers and have previously collaborated with Coach, Aldo, Bulgari and Teen Vogue, just to name a few. So, how do they do it? The Beckerman sisters really seem to have fun with fashion. Definitive subscribers of a “more is more” sensibility, the duo are constantly dressing up for each other on their blog Beckerman Bite Plate and well, we just can’t get enough. The twins let us inside their fabulous Mary Poppins bags for a peek at what they carry with them on a daily basis. The results, as you would imagine, are some of the most vibrant and fun imagery we’ve seen all week!

If the name Erika Bearman doesn’t ring a bell, the Twitter handle @OscarPRgirl certainly will. The newly turned blonde beauty (insider info: blondes do have more fun according to Bearman) came to visit Holt Renfrew last week and gushed about working for fashion legacy, Oscar de la Renta and the movie Truth or Dare. Seriously, if you want to hang with Bearman, it’s highly recommended you watch that film first. It has shaped her entire life (her words, not ours!)

With only a clutch in tow, Bearman showed how to edit a bag to only the essentials but just because it’s small doesn’t mean it didn’t pack a punch. We learned that in Oscar PR Girl’s world, “bigger is better and more is more” when it comes to her cellphone and eyelashes. And if you expected Bearman to be a total girly girl because of ODLR’s signature frothy gowns, you would be mistaken. The face behind the handle loves men’s scented fragrances and even wears Old Spice.

From men’s scents to Jacqueline Kennedy to Korea, Bearman had us captivated by her every word so read on and snoop around her clutch to learn all things Oscar PR Girl.»

  • What’s in your bag, Roksanda Ilincic?

There are a few things you can safely assume about a designer just by looking at their stuff. And in the case of London-based designer Roksanda Ilincic, you can figure this: She’s arty. Between the inspiration behind her Spring 2013 collection (an Opposites Day combo of Niki de Saint Phalle and Josef Albers) and Fall 2013’s fabric play (she blended baby pink PVC and taffeta on evening coats and used laminated lace on dresses), she’s a regular renaissance girl. You can also figure she’s ladylike inclined, given her consistent leanings towards dresses, collared coats and embellished eveningwear). One thing, however, that you (or at least I) couldn’t have known, is how breathtaking she is to behold IRL. I met the Serbian-born beauty last month when she was in town at The Room at Hudson’s Bay and was completely confounded at first glance. The violet eyed, porcelain-skinned, raven-haired designer is over six feet in heels. She’s the perfect model for her clothing, (she wore the opening look from her spring collection during daytime press interviews and this dress from fall for dinner later that night at the buzzy Bent restaurant) as is the similarly slender Duchess of Cambridge, who has worn her dresses in the past. “It’s a huge privilege and such honour and to have somebody like her wearing my dresses. I’m just really, truly honoured I must say,” she raved. To boot, she carries a beautiful purse—a purple satin clutch from her own collection that mirrors the effects of Mary Poppins’ bag. So, as if this ado hasn’t enticed you enough, have a look for yourself.

  • What’s in your bag, Linda Lundström?

In the late 1980s/early 1990s, the Linda Lundström-designed LaParka was all the rage for anyone looking for the perfect winter coat. Lundstrom’s fashion legacy lives on and she re-launched her career in 2012 after a four-year hiatus with L by Linda Lundström. Having worked in the Canadian fashion industry since 1974, Lundström knows a thing or two about what Canadians need (and want!) for the wintertime. Her accessories collection is all handcrafted in Canada and made of leather and furs meaning no two pieces are exactly the same.

Lundström is not only in the midst of re-launching her career but also building a new home—hence why we found bits of steel siding and a tape measure that also doubles as a dog leash from time to time. Are you intrigued about what’s inside her bag yet? Read on and take a look around!
