Paris Fashion Week: Seasonless dressing makes a comeback for Fall 2014
See the looks from Paris Fashion Week Fall 2014 »
There has been talk of seasonless dressing for, well, seasons, but at Friday’s shows and appointments, it seemed as though designers were foregoing traditional winter palettes and shapes in favour of short sleeves and sherbet shades. Don’t get me wrong, there were still plenty of furs, leathers and heavy wools, but arming ourselves against the raw winter elements is seeming less and less important. Maybe it’s because when these clothes start filling the racks in late August, the thermometer still reads 30 degrees? Whatever the reason, I’m calling out the springer side of fall shown here at Paris Fashion Week.
More than half of the looks in Roland Mouret‘s 41 look Fall 2014 collection were sleeveless (and I’m not even counting the short and sheer sleeved outfits). Among them were crop tops, exposed shoulders and mesh-panelled backs. The lightness of feather appliqués also seemed like a typically fair weather detail.

Forget family heirlooms! Kate Middleton pairs a $40 Zara necklace with a Roland Mouret gown

Last night the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended the London premiere of Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, as it was selected as this year’s Royal Film Performance. Will and Kate were joined by the film’s stars, Idris Elba and Naomie Harris, as well as Mandela’s daughter, Zindzi Mandela, for the lavish opening. However, the event took a tragic turn when, during the screening, it was announced that Nelson Mandela had passed away. Will briefly shared his condolences with reporters after the film, saying: “We were just reminded what an extraordinary and inspiring man Nelson Mandela was. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. It’s very sad.”
The Royal Film Performance started in 1946, and members of the royal family attend each year with proceeds going to the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund. Always one to look amazing on a red carpet, Kate wore a cream-coloured Roland Mouret gown, a piece that she first wore in May 2012 to a private dinner with The Thirty Club. Kate also wore black suede Prada heels and carried a matching clutch by Mulberry. She also debuted a new hairstyle, opting to wear her hair in a volume-filled ponytail, tied with a black ribbon. But the standout item is, without a doubt, the necklace.

Florence Welch vs Karlie Kloss: Who wore the long-sleeved dress best?
Last night’s gala at the American Museum of Natural History brought out much of New York City’s social set (including almost the entire cast of Saturday Night Live) but it was Florence Welch and Karlie Kloss who caught our eye, both in stunning floor-length gowns and full sleeves. With the crisp, cold weather settling in for the season, it’s no wonder that full-coverage dresses are getting so much play on the red carpet. (And what better to wear when you’re spending the evening inside an expansive—and likely drafty—museum?)
For the Florence and the Machine singer, it was all about a dreamy metallic look from the Valentino Spring 2014 collection. The sheer dress was made up of layers of tulle, adorned with a patchwork of satin panels and embroidered folkloric designs. Welch completed the look with simple grey pumps and a red box clutch. As for her hair and makeup, a milkmaid braid (very Spring 2012 Valentino, no?) and red lip tied it all together.

Spring 2014 shoes: 55 favourites we’re already itching to get our feet into
See our favourite Spring 2014 shoes »
With Paris Fashion Week ending our month long preview of all things Spring 2014, it’s time we gushed over the shoes that accompanied all that we are dying to wear in the coming season.
Femininity reigned supreme on the runway through Balenciaga, Dior and Roland Mouret’s take on the stiletto. Dior’s complexly inter woven straps would make any shoe addict salivate. At Balmain, our impending full coverage boots will shed a few layers and appear as heeled boots with varying dotted sheer and embellished cage finishes. While we saw Saint Laurent’s fall styles embrace the studded and spiked appeal of punk’s aesthetic, Junya Watanabe clung onto the trend for his Spring 2014 shoes with a menacing ankle boot. Enviable green snakeskin heels and platform chunky heels were seen at Gucci and Michael Kors respectively. Spring is incomplete without feather embellished flats as seen at Rochas.

TIFF 2013: Bring on the A-listers! 13 best dressed picks from the red carpets, parties and premieres
See the TIFF 2013 red carpet best dressed picks »
After ten days of red carpet premieres, after parties and celebrity stalking, TIFF 2013 has officially come to an end.
Possibly the best (and most well-dressed) year yet, Toronto had quite the roster of A-list celebrities in town to promote new films and projects. While the crush-worthy men looked as dapper as always, it was really the ladies who stole the show, bringing glamorous outfits onto the red carpet.
Cool blue tones were a favourite amongst the stars (possibly a nod to the emerging Spring 2014 trend?) with the colour appearing on Olivia Wilde, Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Aniston—to name a few.
And while celebrities like Taylor Swift, Sandra Bullock and Scarlett Johansson opted for the minimalist yet sultry look in solid colours, how could anyone forget Keira Knightley’s whimsical printed dress by Mary Katrantzou.
Not ready to let go of TIFF just yet? From Nicole Kidman’s tailored pantsuit to Kate Winslet’s glowing pregnancy style, we’ve rounded up the top TIFF red carpet looks and all you have to do is vote for your favourite.

TIFF 2013: Olivia Wilde, Chris Hemsworth and a surprise appearance by Liam Hemsworth on the Rush red carpet
See the Rush red carpet photos »
Are we seeing triple or was that the entire Hemsworth family on the Rush red carpet last night at TIFF? Star Chris Hemsworth was joined by his actor brothers Luke Hemsworth and Miley’s on-again-off-again fiancé Liam Hemsworth (whose scruffy beard has us thoroughly divided). While Chris wore a three-piece Gucci checked suit and deep burgundy tie, his brothers took care not to show him up in simpler grey looks. Also present, was the Rush star’s wife Elsa Pataky who was looking super haute in a white embellished Elie Saab Fall 2013 gown.

TIFF 2013: Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska debut their couple status at The Double’s after-party

In celeb land, sometimes the moment’s there and sometimes it ain’t. And it was most certainly the latter for our friend Kevin Naulls of Toronto Life, who received quite The Social Network-worthy brush off from a one Jesse Eisenberg at last night’s after-party for The Double, a film which he co-stars in with girlfriend Mia Wasikowska. The actor was deep in conversation and was fairly perturbed at the intrusion. He managed pleasantries, albeit curt ones. Guess everyone isn’t a Gay Witch fan?

Venice Film Festival 2013: Our top 10 best dressed from the first week of red carpets, parties and photo calls
See the Venice Film Festival 2013 images »
It’s only a week into the 70th annual Venice Film Festival and the stars are bringing their sartorial A-game. To help us keep track of the endless red carpet premieres, photo-calls and press conferences, we’re rounding it up with 10 of our favourite fashion looks so far. With TIFF coming up this week, we’re getting a good idea of what the celebrities are bringing to the red carpet and let’s just say, we’re not worried at all.
We’re used to seeing Sandra Bullock playing it safe with monochromatic tones on the red carpet, and so it was a breath of fresh air to see the Oscar-winning actress in two colourful ensembles last week. Arriving in style, Bullock wore a colourblock dress by Alex Perry and Giuseppe Zanotti heels at the photo call for her film Gravity. Later in the evening, she left us speechless at the opening ceremony in a red strapless silk gown by J. Mendel from the Resort 2014 collection as she completed the outfit with Martin Katz jewellery and Roger Vivier black clutch and ankle-strap sandals.

Sarah Jessica Parker vs. Blake Lively: Who wore florals best at Target’s Toronto opening?
See more photos from Target’s Toronto opening »
On Wednesday, Target rolled out the red carpet to celebrate its arrival into our home and native land. Walking on said carpet and heading towards the aisles and aisles of goods in the Danforth location in Toronto was none other than megawatt stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Blake Lively, looking positively springy with floral details.
Both dressed in light ensembles but we saw SJP in an age-appropriate outfit with white pants, a sheer polka dot button-up and safety pinned blazer over top. What really made the whole look stand out was the oversized flower boutineer on her shoulder, taking florals for spring to a very literal place.
As for Lively, the actress extended the hemline from what we’ve grown used to on Gossip Girl and opted for a pale watercolour floral dress from Roland Mouret’s Spring 2013 collection. Lively’s pale skin and pale hair and pale dress was all tied together with a bright pair of floral “Sissi” pumps by Christian Louboutin and the look didn’t even wash her out.

Tried-and-true retailer Reitmans teams up for the holidays with up-and-coming label Martin Lim
It’s a sweltering summer day, but in a cavernous (and thankfully, cool) Montreal loft studio a model is glammed up like a hostess at a holiday fete. The shoot is for a capsule collection that brings together 365-store-strong Canadian retailer Reitmans and two-year-old fashion label Martin Lim, designed by Montreal-based husband and wife team Pao Lim and Danielle Martin, who won last year’s Mercedes-Benz Start Up competition. But these designers aren’t exactly new kids on the block. After both completing a master of arts in fashion at London’s prestigious Central Saint Martins, Martin and Lim honed their design skills in Paris: she worked at Christian Lacroix; both put in time at Roland Mouret. In 2004, they returned to Canada, and launched their own line in 2010.
