The star-studded list of M.A.C Viva Glam Fashion Cares hosts and performers has been released!
M.A.C Viva Glam Fashion Cares is one of Toronto’s hottest annual tickets, so it comes as no surprise that the fundraiser gala’s roster for this year’s event does not disappoint. From longtime HIV/AIDS activist Elton John (whose partner David Furnish co-chairs the event with Michael King) to new faces like Sky Ferreira (who we spoke with last month) and Janelle Monáe, the routinely sold-out gala is shaping up to be the go-to event of the fall.
Not only will there be enough musical talent on hand to easily keep you distracted all night (think everyone from Scissor Sisters to homegrown talent like Kreesha Turner), but in true Fashion Cares style, there will be an abundance of amazing fashion as well. Dean and Dan Caten of DSQUARED2, who are teaming up with legendary supermodel Linda Evangelista for hosting duties, are sending their designs down the runway at the gala, alongside looks from Vivienne Westwood, Elie Saab, Pink Tartan and more. On that style note, it’s worth mentioning that some of Elton John’s most memorable, famously flamboyant costumes will be on display as well as a quarter century retrospective highlighting the event’s most glamorous looks.

Meet Lily Collins: Our April cover star discusses her breakout role as Snow White and gives us the lowdown on her spring wardrobe staples
Princess Diary
By Dennis HensleyLily Collins embarks on a thoroughly modern fairy tale with her first starring role,
as a sword-fighting, prince-saving Snow White. When Lily Collins arrived for her first costume fitting as Snow White on the Montreal set of Mirror Mirror, she assumed the most fabulous getups would go to her co-star Julia Roberts, who plays the evil queen. “I saw all these dramatic, colourful, amazing outfits and I thought, ‘Wow, Julia’s so lucky,’” says the 23-year-old British-born actress who’s best known for playing Sandra Bullock’s daughter in The Blind Side. “And then they started bringing them in, and I said, ‘Is this for me?’ The first outfit took 25 minutes to get into, and when I looked in the mirror I got teary-eyed.” Then there were the elaborate sets; she describes a giant indoor forest and 40 tons of salt for snow. “I was sprinting through this huge room of trees, in my ball gown, sword-fighting, going up cliffs,” she marvels. “When the crew brought their kids onto set, they would see me and start crying. They were like, ‘Blanche Neige!’”

Vivienne Westwood is no stranger to speaking her mind. This time, she voices her opinion on UK style at the runway presentation of her Red Label diffusion collection, saying, “people have never looked so ugly” along with these other gems: “In history, people dressed much better than we do today. If you saw Queen Elizabeth […]

They said/We said: Katy Perry’s AMA look turns her into a walking billboard for the Chinese Communist party
Katy Perry stood out on the American Music Awards red carpet on Sunday for her bright makeup and matching pink hair adorned with crystals. Now she’s also getting attention for the four prominent Chinese characters on her floral Vivienne Westwood SS12 dress. The characters, when translated into English, say “green economy,” which is a phrase that’s often ridiculed by the Chinese public as an example of the Soviet-style ideological euphemisms that are in their political leaders’ speeches.
Westwood’s SS12 collection was inspired by China’s traditional wisdom, and Chinese official Wang Xijia wrote the phrase and her name, both of which she used on the dress. Whether or not Westwood intentionally chose these particular characters for Xijia to write, commenters on Chinese message boards are revelling in the irony of the former punk designer become a vehicle for political propaganda.

LFW diary: A chock full day 2 of Ashish, Vivienne Westwood, House of Holland, Jonathan Saunders, and more!
Jardins d’Ashish, a collection chock-a-block with sequined sunflowers, daisies over checkerboard patterns, and the occasional brick wall, brought day two of London fashion week to a sunny start—even if it ended on a much (MUCH!) colder note. After the show, I headed backstage to meet Ashish Gupta, the designer behind Ashish. “I think was feeling quite romantic this season, and didn’t feel like I really needed that sense of humour,” he said. While the designer isn’t widely known in North America, his designs are pretty major across the pond; he’s launching his second Topshop collab next month. (Note to the Bay: bring it, bring it, bring it!)

Summer read: Get a Life
All ad campaigns are not created equal. Despite their commercial origins, some creep into the realm of contemporary art—particularly when shot by a photographer as singular as Juergen Teller for a client as fearless as Vivienne Westwood.

Royal wedding countdown: Day 2
While some seem doubtful, we feel that Kate has the chops to one day become a style icon rivaling her late great mother-in-law. Kate, if you’re reading this (Hi!!!), we think all it would really take is branching out from your jersey dresses and pea coats and embracing the incredible talent that London fashion has to offer. For the couple’s impending honeymoon (rumoured to be taking place in either Australia or Africa), we picked a slightly more daring designer honeymoon wardrobe that we think would be sure to help Katie that secure her a spot in royal fashion history.
