NYFW style snaps: Behind the scenes at Jeremy Laing
We’re taking a little break from our usual street style beat to give you a behind-the-scenes look at the goings-on before, during, and after Jeremy Laing’s Fall 2012 show. As you might have already read, we loved Laing’s collection—from his fresh denim velvet abstract print to the rear-view zippers, it’s easy to see why he’s one of Canada’s strongest exports.

NYFW diary: Rear-view zips at Jeremy Laing, DKNY’s super slick leather, bright bright brights at Thakoon, and Hilfiger does Hermès
The constant rushing between back-to-back shows (and shows, and shows, and shows) can make fashion week feel like somewhat of a big blurry journey. Uptown, then downtown, then—where are we again? Amidst that kind of chaos, it’s nice to switch it up with a few friendly faces, which was the scene at Jeremy Laing’s show yesterday morning. Everyone from photographers Tommy Ton and Jason Hudson, to writers Amy Verner and Sarah Nicole Prickett, to cool kids Eva Michon and Matt Jackson turned out to root for one of the strongest home-team players. Cue his splendidly architectural collection, with its attention to the backside (rear-view zips, backwards button-downs, and capes) and its awesomely fresh denim velvet abstract print interspersed throughout the collection, and you’ve got one helluva brunch replacement (to thankfully be followed by one actual brunch).

Our top beauty picks to match Pantone’s 2012 colour of the year: Tangerine Tango
Pantone has announced the colour of the year for 2012 and our future is looking bright. Tangerine Tango (that’s Pantone number 7625C for the designers out there) is a punchy mix of orange, coral, and red—making it an extremely versatile shade for all skin tones. And, considering that Sephora and Pantone are rumoured to be working on a Tangerine Tango–inspired makeup collection for March 2012, it’s a good thing this chosen colour is so multifaceted.

TFW diary: Holt Renfrew opens LG fashion week with 56 looks of Canadian-made cool
Holt Renfrew kicked off LG Fashion Week with a noisy, crowded bang last night—editors and buyers (and a one Mr. Jay Manuel) got to know each other really, really well, all squished in together on benches in the tents at David Pecaut Square. As is their wont, Holts sent out micro collections from eight of their Canadian best—for whom the question of whether their collections will actually make it to stores has already been settled. NYFW style snaps: Our snaps from inside Jeremy Laing’s New York show
When Jeremy Laing debuted his Spring 2012 collection in New York on Sunday, we were there. So were Jeanne Beker and socialite Stacey Kimel. (Canucks gotta stick together in the big bad city, right?) Check out Lewis’s snaps from front row (beside Leigh Lezark, we should add). To say they’re not your run of the mill runway photos would be an understatement.

NYFW diary: East and West Coast patriotism at Derek Lam, DKNY, and Thakoon’s September 11th shows
Arguably Toronto’s biggest shopper, Stacey Kimel has been making her rounds at some of New York Fashion Week’s biggest shows (Prabal Gurung, Thakoon, and more!), but judging from her front row appearance at yesterday morning’s show, home-grown talent Jeremy Laing is also on her spring shopping list (lucky boy!). While I can’t picture her sporting the Yohji Yamamoto meets Marky Mark one-strap overalls, the windswept asymmetrical gowns, linen palazzo pants, and sheer flowing tunic tops in shades of pumpkin, crème, and silvery grey are a sure bet.

Go inside Power Ball 2011 and peep all the Jeremy Laing–wearing lovelies!
What’s the one event that’s sure to draw throngs of artists, social busybodies and high rollers alike? The annual Power Ball, held in support of the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, is the one stop on Toronto’s gala circuit that you really don’t want to miss.
The theme of this year’s fest was The 13th Floor, described by the organizers as, “A place you’ve never been before. A party untouched by time and cloaked in intrigue. Hidden surprises, altered realities, a playground for the imagination.” And what a playground it was. Held in the labyrinthine lakefront gallery, the party was attended by more than 1,700 people in what felt like 13 different rooms, each with its own theme and soundtrack.
