Inside the Mackage fashion week bash: Brendan Fallis’s tunes make for one sweaty late dance party
See the Mackage after-party pictures »
A sparse wintertime social calendar will do things to a person. Namely, make them want to party. On Wednesday night, spring fever was certainly in the air and Toronto’s most stylish were out for a good time. After the Joe Fresh and Pink Tartan co-hosted party over at Lee restaurant, the gang headed over to The Citizen (formerly Brant House) for a hip-hop throwdown courtesy of Mackage, Maybelline and Redken.
DJ Brendan Fallis a.k.a. 21st century Paul Newman set the stage for one helluva sweaty dance party, swiftly (maybe a little swiftly) blending A$AP Rocky into Lynyrd Skynyrd like woah. (Important note: Beyoncé’s “Drunk in Love” was the only track played in full which kept everything right in the world). Leading the dance pack was Cary Tauben who flitted from group to group with his signature flair. Honourable mentions go to designer Mikhael Kale, Chatelaine editor Tyler Franch and Narrative PR’s Laura Serra for fashionably beating up the beat till the wee hours.

Mackage Fall 2014: 50 looks that prove you can survive a Canadian winter in style
See the Mackage Fall 2014 collection »
To survive a Canadian winter in style, it’s crucial to have an arsenal of coats and layers in your closet that actually keep you warm. No one has perfected this art better than Elisa Dahan and Eran Elfassy. The Montreal-based co-creative directors of Mackage have made it their mission to keep us looking sleek in the sleet.
Feeling the chilly effects of the unyielding and sometimes cruel power of Mother Nature, the designers found inspiration in the much-maligned polar vortex of 2014. “We really want to show that you can look amazing even though it’s cold, even if you’re bundled up,” said Dahan backstage before the show. “For us, a coat is not a commodity anymore. It’s your outfit.”
Showcased on a runway covered in faux fall leaves, this season’s offerings are sure to please the most discerning of northern dwellers. Quilted leather bombers, boucle tweed trench coats, camo varsity jackets, magenta cocoon coats and parkas, of course, were layered over neoprene crop tops, wool skirts and leather pants. The brand’s handbag collection, which launched last season, has been expanded to include options for the boys, including laptop bags and backpacks.

Stylish winter coats: Prep for the polar vortex with 13 ultra-warm picks
See our stylish winter coat picks »
It’s official. 2014 can now lay claim to the coldest day of the century. And while the frigid temperatures caught everyone off guard, the polar vortex will come again, if you can believe it. Layers upon layers of sweaters and scarves all piled under a bulky overcoat simply ain’t going to cut it anymore. You owe it to your closet, and to yourself, to invest in a quality stylish winter jacket. Consider us your winter wardrobe therapists.
One of the greatest winter conundrums of maintaining steez in the snow is how to find a unique coat that highlights your style. Lo and behold: the yearly challenge of finding a “not-completely-heinous-and-isn’t-a-black-hooded-fur-trimmed-parka-but-will-still-keep-you-toasty-warm” coat. We say: bring it on.

Mackage Spring 2014: High hemlines and iridescent accessories make our must-have list for next season
See the Mackage Spring 2014 collection »
Last night’s Mackage show took us through the looking glass. Co-creative directors Elisa Dahan and Eran Elfassy “found inspiration in the reflection of light off of mirrored surfaces.” The duo decked out their runway in a shiny gold coating and put models against the dramatic backdrop of a huge mirror. Within the collection, handbags, belts, sleeves and shorts were all given a polished sheen.
The show was all about the gams, as models wore leather wrap skirts, running shorts and organza minis in poppy, black, white and sand. Every manner of biker jacket (short-sleeved, loose-fitted, colourful, et cetera) was paired perfectly with sheer tops and crops, while a sheer white mini worn over matching undies was right on trend.

Top Coats: 5 Canadian outerwear lines that are heating up our winter wardrobes
Sentaler
“They don’t make ’em like that anymore.” Belgrade-born, Toronto-based designer Bojana Sentaler Nikolic could be referring to her own line of luxury coats, which are individually made and hand-finished, but in this case she’s talking about the inimitable Karl Lagerfeld. She crossed the Kaiser’s path five years ago while working in media in Dubai. During a meeting with him about the villas he was designing, she snuck in a few career questions of her own. “I said, ‘Listen, Karl, I went to business school, but my passion is fashion, can I do it?’” she recalls. “He said, ‘What do you mean? I didn’t go to fashion school, look at me.’ He was so blunt and nonchalant. That was 2008, and I launched Sentaler in 2009.”Karl’s predictably eloquent advice aside, another driver in Sentaler’s decision to pursue a life of design was the dearth of winter outerwear that satisfied both her function and fashion requirements. “Wool coats weren’t warm enough, and puffy down jackets weren’t as elegant,” she says. “I remember not liking winters because of those jackets.” It took a six-month stint researching fabrics in South America to solve her conundrum. While in Peru, she zeroed in on alpaca fibres, which she praises for being warmer, lighter and more durable than wool.

See all our fashion month coverage »Fashion month may have finally wrapped, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to forget about the trends that emerged for Fall 2013 on the many runways of New York, London, Milan, Paris and Toronto—In fact, it’s time for them to take front and centre. While shoppers everywhere are snapping up the best of the selling floor’s offerings for spring and summer, designers, buyers and editors alike are busy prepping ahead. And since we know y’all like to keep ahead of the curve, we’ve sorted through hundreds of photos and selected 10 of the top Fall 2013 trends so that you can mentally prep (and save) too!
Next season, it’s all about fur, which landed in both faux and real on runways including Marni, JW Anderson, and most strikingly at Fendi, where it was combined in a dizzying multitude of punky ways. The 1990s were back for another resurgence, continuing Spring 2013’s grunge trend at Saint Laurent in Paris and Chloé Comme Parris right here at home. On the street, the look was easily created by many fashion week attendees who layered plaids on waists, under jackets and even on tights. And while practically speaking, it may be no major surprise that outerwear was one of the top Fall 2013 trends, this show season we saw jackets take on new forms with quilting, oversized shapes and bold colours which were mirrored outside the shows, with equally interesting choices hitting the pavement
Here are 100 images to help jog your memory of the top Fall 2013 trends spotted inside and outside of the fashion week stents, so sit back, click through, and relive the fashion month in all its street style and runway glory.

Toronto Fashion Week Spring 2013 Street Style: 37 shots of Anita Clarke, Dan Levy, Cory Lee and hot male models outside the shows
See the latest looks from Toronto Fashion Week »
We’ve surpassed the halfway point in Toronto’s World Mastercard Fashion Week Spring 2013 (that’s a mouthful) and the awesome street style photos shot by Stefania Yarhi just keep rolling in. Today’s edition of photos is furr-ocious (sorry, we had to) because everyone decided to go all out in fur. We saw hats, scarves, vests, and more, you name it, it was there in fur.
Humpday of Fashion Week featured some of the biggest shows from leather lovers, Mackage to the nation’s favourite, Joe Fresh—which brought out some of Toronto’s fashion it gals. Anita Clarke of I Want I Got, wore a flannel printed blazer and Jaclyn Genovese of Jacflash matched her flannel dress with a leather moto jacket (the moto jacket has become a favourite of Spring 2013 Fashion Week).

Holt Renfrew celebrates 175 years with specially-designed pieces from Christian Louboutin, Bobbi Brown, Michael Kors and a special appearance by Elton John!
See all the anniversary pieces! »
We might as well pitch a tent and set up camp outside Holt Renfrew’s sleek Bloor Street entrance, because come September, it will be the place to be. Not only is Holt’s taking part in Fashion’s Night Out festivities September 6 (stay tuned for details!), but the store is also ringing in it’s monumental 175th birthday. In true Holt’s fashion, the Hot @175 anniversary will be rung in in style, with a slew of designer collaborations for sale in (what else?) signature magenta.
From its start in 1837 as a hat and cap shop in Quebec City to the go-to luxury mecca it is today, Holt’s has undeniably had a starring role in Canada’s retail legacy. To fête the occasion, everything from high-fashion designs like Christian Louboutin’s magenta-platform sling backs to fun finds like Pantone’s “Holt Renfrew Magenta” notebook will prove that even at 175, Holt’s still has it.

TFW Diary: Soïa & Kyo has us coveting for a real Canadian winter
By Eliza Grossman

See all Toronto Fashion Week coverage »With a white winter backdrop and the sound of wind blowing to set the mood, designer Ilan Elfassy (brother of the designing duo behind Mackage) presented a pitch-perfect crop of Soïa & Kyo coats ripe for the Canadian winter. Well, maybe not this winter, but you get the picture. The mainly neutral outerwear palette was accented with a few bolder choices in red or mustard, a particularly covetable one worn on the runway by one of our home-grown model loves, Herieth Paul. Casual on the whole, the selection did prove its sleek factor with versatile numbers that belted from inside.
