Ghost Story: Examining the spirit-inspired beauty look that haunted the Fall 2013 runways
Gareth Pugh photography by James Cochrane; Product photography by Carlo Mendoza See our haunted beauty picks »
Wraiths and spectres of all kinds haunted the fall runways. At Altuzarra, eyes were rimmed with “spooky” grey shadow and an ominous reddish blur; models wore a “ghostly” pallor and eerily shining eyes at Mary Katrantzou; Gareth Pugh’s soot-washed damsels looked as if they’d just entered the netherworld through a burning house; and nails were scrawled with “redrum” at The Blonds, a nod to The Shining.

Beauty Fix: How to boost dull skin the morning after a late night out, tips for wearing bright blush and more

I bought a bright blush on a whim and it’s much more pigmented than I thought. How do I apply it?
Working with intense pigmentation can involve a bit of a learning curve, especially if you’re used to a more forgiving formula. When dealing with a mega pigmented blush, such as a mighty magenta shade like Nars Blush in “Coeur Battant” ($32, narscosmetics.com), it all boils down to how you apply the product. Take your blush brush and tap it very lightly in the blush and tap it lightly on the back of your hand to remove a bit of the pigment. Now you can apply the blush to your face as you usually would. Step back and evaluate the colour payoff and repeat this process until you’re pleased with the outcome. The idea here is that it’s easier to gradually add colour to the face instead of inundating your cheeks with a bold shade that would overwhelm your whole look.

Minimalist makeup: Experts share the skincare tips and product picks you need to master this trend
Runway photography by Peter Stigter How to master the minimalist makeup trend »
The minimalist makeup look has been going strong for a few seasons, and as our Fall 2013 beauty trend report revealed, it’s not going away anytime soon. From the perfectly powdered skin at Haider Ackerman to the glossy lids at Giambattista Valli, models appeared on the runway sans eye and lip makeup. The minimalist trend may cause beauty junkies everywhere to reluctantly put down their beloved colour cosmetics—but there’s a whole slew of other products to consider in order to achieve the look.
To say that most of us won’t leave the house without a little makeup on is putting it mildly, especially when it comes to what we apply around the eyes. (Puffiness, dark circles and redness are what keep the concealer business afloat!) However, makeup alone can’t fix the sins of the skin, so it’s important to have a good skincare routine in place. To help you master the minimalist look, we spoke to Dermalogica’s skincare guru Amanda Matcham and Plutino Group makeup artist Natalie Ventola. Their tips, techniques and must-have products are sure to help you achieve the natural look with ease.

Why Snapchat is not just for teens: From Nars to Rebecca Minkoff, brands are embracing the blink-and-you-miss-it app
Photography by Stefania Yarhi When it comes to sharing news or a sneak peek at a new collection, brands are starting to feel a little “been there, done that” with the major social media channels. Thankfully, with apps there’s always something new waiting in the wings. So move over, Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram: Snapchat is quickly becoming the publicity tool of choice for fashion and beauty brands.
This morning, Nars shared its upcoming Guy Bourdin holiday makeup collection via the blink-and-you-miss-it app. The 10-second preview was sent out to those who had added the Narsisisst account to their friends list and it’s a move that successfully combined every-gal access with insider exclusivity.
However, they’re not the first brand to use Snapchat: Earlier this month, Rebecca Minkoff embraced the app during New York Fashion Week. The unheard of marketing move was announced via Twitter and allowed users to receive Snapchats of looks from the Spring 2014 collection before they hit the runway.

TIFF 2013: 23 gorgeous photos of Jennifer Aniston on the Life of Crime red carpet for the festival’s closing night

What a closing day the TIFF 2013 crowd was treated to! Adoring fans waited patiently for Jennifer Aniston to grace the red carpet at the Life Of Crime screening and boy was she worth the wait.
In a classic Vivienne Westwood dress, Jennifer Aniston stepped onto the red carpet to a frenzy of screaming fans and camera flashes. The sleeveless and corseted dress in a powder-blue hue was paired with beige Westwood heels and metallic drop earrings. With makeup done by Nars, Aniston’s eyes were enhanced with a dove-grey colour palette inspired by the dress. The look was completed with a natural neutral-pink lip. Her highly coveted hair was pumped up with a bit of volumn and new blonde highlights, but otherwise left to hang on her bare shoulders. What can we say: Aniston looked fantastic in a style that deviated from the love of her signature little black dress.

New York Fashion Week backstage beauty: Spring 2014 is a battle between brights and barely-there

Backstage at Jason Wu on Friday, I spotted it from across the room: bright, metallic sparkle all over the models’ eyelids. Diane Kendal for Lancôme created a dramatic but refined eye look for Wu inspired by Marlene Dietrich. “We wanted the eye to reflect light,” said Kendal. “To give it that feeling of summer.” The base was a caramel-y brown shade (Lancôme Color Design Eye Brightening All-in-One 5 Pan Shadow & Liner Palette in “Bronze Amour”); then she used a damp brush, dipped it in fine glitter, and applied it to the centre of the eye. The effect was completely luminous. And the rest of the face was bare…a trend that would continue backstage at the weekend’s other Spring 2014 shows as well.

My eyeshadow seems to be fading fast in this humidity, but long-wearing formulas dry out my lids. How can I get my usual shadow to stay put longer?
As the mercury continues to rise and we creep towards impossible temperatures, we have to do whatever possible to make sure our face doesn’t slide off after mere minutes outside. While long-wear formulas can be extremely effective in staying put, they do dry out and dehydrating the skin in effort to reduce oil on the surface that causes makeup to shift. Instead, try smoothing on a thin layer of eyeshadow primer, such as Nars Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base ($24, narscosmetics.ca) prior to applying any eye makeup. This eye primer, which is enriched with an antioxidant rice extract, uses a polymer and mineral powder blend to ensure that your eye makeup (cream, liquid, powder, pencil) is anchored effectively for hours on end, even if you’re breaking a sweat. -

I seem to have some clogged pores that won’t budge. Is there a good way to clear up my skin without getting a facial?
Clogged pores are pesky! They’re not quite a full-on breakout, but they definitely detract from the overall health of your skin. Dead skin cells, dirt, debris or excess oil can clog pores. So let me quickly reiterate how important it is to remove makeup and cleanse skin nightly! Doing so will drastically reduce the likelihood of clogged pores, but no one is entirely immune from them. Attack with a mask, such as SkinCeuticals Clarifying Clay Masque ($50, skinceuticals.com). While this is a clay-based concoction, which is always optimal for purifying skin and controlling sebum production, the formula is actually boosted by 5 per cent mixed hydroxy acids. The blend of hydroxy acids includes glycolic acid, which will alleviate the accumulation of dead skin cells, as well as citric, tartaric, and malic acids, which are all antioxidants that, when applied twice a week, will help get your skin to the state you want it to be in. -
