Designer DIY: Bring on the jewels! 3 easy steps to update a pair of pumps
Photography by Farzin Ghayour This week’s DIY comes courtesy of our crafty intern extraordinaire, Erin Summer-Kibblewhite, who joined us for a week after she won H&M’s Conscious Couture Contest with her eco-friendly beaded collar. Erin’s DIY skills continued to wow us when she created the perfect summer to fall transition pumps inspired by the bold jewel tones that paraded down Miu Miu’s Fall 2012 runway. Erin added a little bling to a gorgeous pair of ruby red pumps, showing us that it’s possible to get a designer footwear look without shelling out for designer footwear prices. Kudos Erin!

Owner Shannon Bizon has relocated her just-over-a-year-young store, Shoeuphoria (Grenier Place, 200 St. Albert Rd., St. Albert, 780-418-7785, shoeuphoria.ca), to a sophisticated new space but kept the same affordable prices. This season’s standout styles include colour-block wedges and strappy metallic sandals. The wide selection of labels include Jessica Simpson, Rockport, Steve Madden and Canadian line Blondo.

They said/We said: Just because you can genetically modify a stingray’s skin for a “stylish” pair of custom shoes doesn’t mean you should
In today’s “things that may be ethically questionable” news, the aptly named Rayfish Footwear will not only make you sneakers out of stingray skin, they will also genetically modify an alive-but-doomed stingray so that its skin’s patterns and etchings are one-of-a-kind. You know…so that your shoes, which will begin at $1,800, are one of a kind.
As the people at Rayfish Footwear describe it, your shoe will “grow” to your specified design choices thanks to a team of scientists who farm stingrays in the company’s Thai aquaculture facility.

Eco-friendly with elegance: Gucci to launch a line of environmentally sound shoes
Image courtesy Harper's Bazaar Proving that you don’t need to dress in head-to-toe hemp to do good for the environment, Gucci has launched a line of environmentally friendly shoes for both men and women.
Frida Giannini, the Italian brand’s creative designer, made sure the line was environmentally sound from shoe string to sole, but did so without sacrificing the brand’s famous stamp of luxury.

True Blood’s Anna Paquin on art collecting, family plans and playing Sookie—plus her shopping picks for summer
By Elio Iannacci. Photographed by James White. Styled by Penny Lovell.
Read our interview with Anna Paquin »
See Anna Paquin’s shopping picks »You can learn a lot about an actress by the way she steps on set for a photo shoot. Some stars require the armour of an entourage; others need a personality-devoid space and monastic silence. Anna Paquin is unquestionably neither of the above. Upon arriving at L.A.’s Smashbox Studios on a scalding Saturday afternoon, the Winnipeg-born, New Zealand-raised actress introduces herself to the FASHION crew without hesitation. Serving up a warm, Kiwi-accented “Nice to meet you” to photographer James White—and his troop of all-guy assistants crushing on her—the 29-year-old talent does the rounds as if she were hosting a cocktail party. Of course, there is a reason for Paquin’s accelerated social skills. Having won an Oscar at the age of 11 for her performance in Jane Campion’s The Piano, Paquin has grown up with cameras and handshakes at every corner, starring in a mix of family pictures (Fly Away Home), blockbusters (X-Men), indie flicks (The Squid and the Whale) and, most recently, a ratings monster of a TV series called True Blood.
After changing into her favoured cover look—a Jackie Onassis-like Marc Jacobs dress trimmed with silver studs—Paquin dashes in front of the lens, occasionally cracking jokes and posing without any forced fabulousness. Her good humour remains intact long after the array of designer heels and baubles are put away and we are left alone to talk.

Christian Louboutin is launching a makeup collection! Want to guess which products it will include?
Photography by Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images If you’re obsessed with Christian Louboutin‘s red-soled shoes, you may have heard that he just announced plans for a luxury beauty line. While we’re privy to his inspiration (the statue of ancient Egyptian queen Nefertiti) and the launch date (late 2013), we’ll have to wait to see what products the collection will offer. Louboutin admitted that the popularity of “Louboutin manicures” (which Adele did so well at the Grammys) were part of what prompted him to make the move into beauty—and we’ll take that as a hint that polish will be included. But what else? Instead of blindly guessing, we’re turning to the shoes for the answer!
Play along! What are the shoes trying to tell us about the forthcoming makeup collection? »

Game on: 4 steps on how to wear Spring’s sport utility trend
The race is on to find this season’s most sleek, athletic-inspired pieces. “Sport was touched on in almost every collection,” says Nicholas Mellamphy, creative director of The Room at the Bay. He points to Anthony Vaccarello’s use of tech fabrics and utility details, Antonio Berardi’s strong colour and stripe detailing, Yves Saint Laurent’s “sporty but elegant” eveningwear jumpsuits and J. Mendel’s play on the old-school sports jersey. The question is: Can sporty wear be made office-appropriate? Mellamphy laces up to give us a pep talk.
