Along with the crisp fall breeze that assures us summer is winding down comes new fashion possibilities—and what better to fill the void in your closet? With fall comes a tendency for darker attire, the bold textures, edgy colours and metallic hardware—of course, these are just a few of things to look forward to this season, and don’t feel restricted to just one!
We’ve combined this season’s boldest looks to love and layer, and they’re sure to spice up your wardrobe of neutrals and remind you that more is more. We may not be shedding skin as the temperatures drop, but we sure are showing new skins, like wine-stained leathers for trenches and tops and multi-hued furs for coats. Classic camouflage prints were all over pants and pumps that came stomping down the runways for everyone from Jean Paul Gaultier to Carolina Herrera. These pieces are not for the faint of heart or the timid to trends—but keeping warm doesn’t mean letting your style go cold.

Discounts for all! Kate Spade, J.Crew, Hudson’s Bay and more will open at Toronto Premium Outlets
Photography by ralphandjenny/Flickr There’s no longer a need for Canadians to line up at the border for hours just so we can take advantage of the many great American outlet malls. This summer, Southern Ontario will have an outlet mall of its own, full of top tier brands and retailers: Toronto Premium Outlets—owned by Simon’s Premium Outlets, the company behind discount shopping destinations in Las Vegas, Palm Springs and Orlando—is set to open just outside of Toronto.
Anchored by a Hudson’s Bay outlet, Toronto Premium Outlets will include everything from fashion brands, like Michael Kors and J.Crew, to home furnishing stores, like Restoration Hardware. And we haven’t even gotten to the best part! The centre will have the first outlet stores in Canada for some cult favourites and top tier designer brands.

It’s Inauguration Day for Barack Obama and our American friends across the border today and with that pomp, ceremony and history making underway, we’ve got our eyes peeled for the important things. As ever, Michelle Obama made yet another A+ statement, wearing a blue checked Thom Browne coat, J.Crew belt, gloves and shoes (later she changed into an amazing pair of custom Reed Krakoff boots). Those brand new blunt bangs were once again in focus, and surer than ever to spark a few years of copycat cuts. Free of the red and blue dress code, Malia and Sasha Obama made fashion statements of their own, in pink J.Crew and purple Kate Spade coats respectively.

“My mom went to Yorkdale and all she got me was olive oil.” That’s what my twenty-month old son might say, if he could talk. But jokes aside, the $185 million expansion to Yorkdale Shopping Centre, complete with heavy hitter nation-wide firsts, is enough to cause serious shopper anxiety: Too much choice.
New to Canada, and Yorkdale, are Kate Spade, Loft, Microsoft, Ted Baker and Tesla Motors (yes, THE car dealer). More familiar retailers sharing the 145,000 square foot addition include Diesel, Ann Taylor, Hugo Boss and Wilfred to name a very few. Holt Renfrew will unveil its new digs in the new year.

Christmas Luxury Gifts: 75 fashion trend-inspired items to thrill the stylish ladies on your list
See all the Christmas luxury gifts »
Holiday shopping for the men and women in your life that have exquisite tastes can be a tricky task. But by taking hints from the Fall 2012 runways, shopping for Christmas luxury gifts can be managed a lot easier. We’ve compiled a list of luxury gift ideas just in time for the holiday season to be upon us.
Geometric prints were one of the biggest trends that came down runways for Fall 2012, so impress a lucky lady in your life by honing your Prada knowledge by choosing a luxury gift that is reminiscent of the brand’s fall collection. Or how about looking to the East for Asian-inspired prints in a shoe from Aldo or beauty travel case from Salvatore Ferragamo—both of which wouldn’t look out of place on the Proenza Schouler Fall 2012 runway.
Christmas luxury gifts can come in all shapes and sizes, but it all depends on the giftee’s personal style and tastes. That being said, a fan of Ralph Lauren’s Fall 2012 collection may not appreciate a D.L. & Co. skull candle; so choose your luxury gifts based on his or her sartorial favorites.
The influence of fashion on the gifts featured in our Christmas luxury gift guide will ease you into checking off the stylish family and friends in your life when doing your shopping this holiday season.

Christmas Gifts for Kids: 50 stylish suggestions for children of all ages
See all the Christmas gifts
for kids »Christmas is the time when the younger ones in our lives declare what they want to see under the tree. And if you’re sick of hearing “puppy!” year after year it’s time to take back the reigns from Santa and plan creative gift ideas for kids all by yourself. While our selection of holiday gift ideas represents a wide range of ages from tiny toddlers to teenagers, they are all products that will make them look forward to your gifts for years to come.
If you want to head down the clothing route for girls, step away from the cutesy pink dresses and choose a studded and totally trendy Topshop headband—which is sure to make the other girls in class envious. And leave it to Marc Jacobs to create a high fashion version of the swappable and coveted Silly Bandz that all spell out his name—a fun and new take of the popular rubber accessory. And when you’re young, the $16 price tag means nothing, but the designer name says it all.

The list: Fiery accents set classic black-and-white houndstooth ablaze
See our editor’s houndstooth picks »
Black and white houndstooth is by no means a new trend in fashion—it gained mainstream popularity in the 1930s and has been modified many times over. For Fall 2012 designers have once again put their spin on the classic look and there are many houndstooth pieces that can be kicked up by simply adding red and gold accents.
Maisonette 1977’s form-fitting dress is not full-on houndstooth, but rather gives a hint of the pattern on the top and bottom in case you’re too nervous to go for the whole nine yards. However, for full-on houndstooth try the popular pattern on pants (like this pair by Melanie Lyne) or on a Jacob skirt. If you’re wearing houndstooth on the bottom, be sure to not do the same on top—break it up with a bold colour, like a red blouse from Equipment.
You can also add pops of colour with the accessories you choose to accent with. Red and black heels by Aquazzura will keep you completely on trend, or go small with jewellery. A red and gold ring by Kate Spade or some gold bracelets from Pandora will add just the right amount of colour, turning a classic outfit into something fiery and fresh.
