TIFF 2012: Gwyneth Paltrow continues her reign as queen of the babes in a backless Tom Ford dress
See the Gwyneth Paltrow at TIFF red carpet photos »
The GOOP-y goodness that is Gwyneth Paltrow shed its glimmering shimmering light on Toronto last night, as the megawatt star hit the TIFF red carpet for the premiere of her new film Thanks for Sharing. Many giggles ensued as the cast— which also includes a bearded Mark Ruffalo, the still-sexy Ed Norton, a wispy-banged Tim Robbins and Patrick Fugit, who OMG looks way different than he did as the wide-eyed writing prodigy William Miller in Almost Famous—posed for photos. Could they be laughing about sexy jokes? Maybs. The film is about sex addiction after all. LOLs!

Who okay-ed this? Egypt’s Olympic uniforms are Nike and Adidas knockoffs!
If you thought Ralph Lauren’s made-in-China garments for the U.S. team’s Olympic Opening Ceremony outfits were scandalous, then brace yourself for something even worse: Egypt has admitted that they not only outsourced the outfits for their 112-person Olympic team, but that the China-made products are knockoffs. The Associated Press spoke with Gen. Mahmoud Ahmed Ali […]

Olympic fever! See what some of the international teams will be wearing to the London 2012 games
The London 2012 Olympics are fast approaching, and countries around the world have unveiled their team uniforms. This year, a handful of buzz-worthy designers were tapped to create sporty looks, including Stella McCartney for Great Britain, Giorgio Armani for Italy and Ralph Lauren for the United States. McCartney’s collection—which used a blue and white themed flag—was received with tepid enthusiasm from the Brits, who felt the omission of the red crosses was a poor design choice. Another disappointment was Ralph Lauren’s retro-Americana inspired uniforms, which were a little too school marmy for our taste and were actually produced overseas, rather than on home turf. Surprisingly, the standouts were the underdogs, who didn’t rely on fashion powerhouses to produce great uniforms. We loved France’s collection, which channeled Parisian-cool with chic black and white uniforms designed by Adidas, as well as Jamaica’s kit, which was playful, colourful, sporty and appropriately designed by Bob Marley’s daughter, Cedella Marley. While Team Canada’s official garbs are yet to be released (a replica collection is already flying off shelves at the Bay), we take a look at some of our favourite worldwide competitors.

It’s a sunny Saturday morning in West Hollywood and Rita Ryack, the Oscar-nominated costume designer known for her work on Casino and A Beautiful Mind, is on a hunt for sequined dresses. Production on the film Rock of Ages is wrapping and she needs one more piece for Catherine Zeta-Jones’ character. Judging by the racks she’s browsing, which are filled with this season’s hottest labels and trends—Versace print T-shirts, heavily embellished Moschino jackets, sweeping red carpet–worthy gowns—you’d think she were shopping at an upscale department store. Think again. She’s at The Way We Wore, a vintage-clothing mecca that attracts A-list clients like Angelina Jolie, Dita Von Teese and Katy Perry. The shop is full of high-end designer pieces, like little black dresses from Chanel, elegant Christian Dior gowns, Pauline Trigère party dresses and Pucci pyjama pants, all dating from the 1930s to the early 1990s.

Sugar High: Soft pastels and frothy silhouettes are on the menu this spring
By David Livingstone
Louis Vuitton show for Spring 2012 opened with the tinkling of a music box and the rising of a scrim to reveal a carousel carrying girls in pale dresses on cream-coloured ponies. It might have seemed a saccharine set-up, but such a response could just be a bad case of not getting it. The news of the season is gentle news. That’s what Marc Jacobs got so right at Louis Vuitton. All the white and those whitened pastels—a key colour trend, favoured by both traditionalists such as Ralph Lauren and more experimental types such as Christopher Kane and Hussein Chalayan—might have appeared to be borrowed from a bag of miniature marshmallows. But the candied palette was not there simply to satisfy a sweet tooth. It also appeals to a Bluetooth appetite when dished out in fabrics that are marvels of modern technology—things like foam organza, silk cellophane and laser-cut leatherette. For the theory-minded, it’s tempting to conclude from the fact that we live in times when you see toddlers dressed in skull patterns and infants swaddled in camo-print blankets that it’s only logical their moms should start playing with pink and baby blue.
