Runway to Real Life: Try colour blocking your makeup! Here’s how to do Marni’s playful Spring 2012 look

Left: Marni Spring 2012 photography by Peter Stigter. Right: Photography and makeup by Dallas Curow. Model: Adriane/Folio Montreal. Marni’s Spring 2012 collection was suspended between girlish youth and confident womanhood. Although the ‘60s chic looks were structured and clean, little hints of whimsy appeared throughout. It was the collection’s playful accessories—two-toned oxfords and clutches—that inspired makeup artist Tom Pecheux to create the orange and white beauty look. By using shadows instead of liners, and by perking up the cheeks and lips with sheer products, you can make this work for real life. The bright, light colours are what make this look youthful and fun, so don’t be shy about using these creamsicle hues.

Runway to Real Life: No gold leaf required for this easy take on Fendi’s Spring 2012 look!

Smart Italian women—scientists and mathematicians, to be exact—were Fendi’s Spring 2012 muses. Models appeared with bouffant, slightly disheveled faux bobs meant to remind us of eccentric scientists. (Einstein, hello!) Their eyes were slightly obscured by frameless shades resembling lab glasses. Behind the shades, the models’ eyes were gilded with gold or silver leaf, which makeup artist Peter Phillips had applied generously to create a raw texture while echoing the shape of the glasses.

Runway to Real Life: Easy tips to help you master Moschino’s smoky eye makeup!

Left: Moschino Spring 2012 photography by Peter Stigter. Right: Photography and makeup by Dallas Curow. Model: Adriane/Folio Montreal. Inspired by Spain’s rich cultural traditions and mythologies, Moschino’s Spring 2012 collection definitely brought the drama. Models sashayed with toreador swagger, wearing ruffled dresses, jingling gold bells and even donning bullfighter hats. Makeup artist Tom Pecheux dreamed up a look that was a tribute to Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, anchored by a strong brow, dramatic smoky eyes and contoured cheeks. The smudginess of the eyes had a painterly quality that was a perfect accompaniment to the vivid collection.
Since the classic black smoky eye is essentially the makeup equivalent of a little black dress, this is a great and wearable look for any special event. We’ll share some tips and tricks for creating a Moschino-worthy version that will stay put all night long.

The cat-eye: We look to icons of different eras for inspiration—plus, tips for painting your own

Jonathan Saunders Spring 2012. Photography by Peter Stigter The cat-eye is having a moment. Celia Ellenberg takes us through its many versions over the years and finds out how to execute them.
While spring tends to signal the arrival of all beauty things light and bright, the runways told a different story this season as designers embraced a certain graphic cosmetic accoutrement that’s seen an impressive evolution over the past few centuries. Behold, the rebirth of the cat-eye. Black-rimmed upper lash lines were the makeup look of choice at shows such as Ruffian and Dolce & Gabbana, and while the backstage miracle workers made it look easy, mastering the perfect flick on your own can be a different story. We’ve gathered eight eyeliner icons and asked Hourglass Cosmetics’ artistic director Gina Brooke and makeup artist Pati Dubroff to weigh in on whether the liquid pen is truly mightier than the kohl pencil when it comes to crafting the perfect winged liner. Because, according to Brooke, “if you use the right products, getting the look is not an issue.”

When Preen‘s Spring 2012 collection was still in its nascent stage, designers Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi were reading a lot of Virginia Woolf, and Victorian era visions of English gardens danced in their heads. The collection featured prints in lush, pastel colours based on blown-up, pixelated peonies. Fittingly, the models faces were flower-petal fresh, their cheeks as rosy as ripe peaches.

See all Toronto Fashion Week coverage »While beatnik style was the official inspiration for beauty at Pink Tartan’s Fall 2012 show, there was a definite Rooney Mara vibe happening backstage. The makeup was almost entirely focused on a deep “ox blood” red lip—Maybelline Super Stay 14Hr lipstick in “Wine and Forever”—a colour that Mara’s known for and that has been trending on runways all season long. (Yves Saint Laurent and Gucci, for instance.)

See all Toronto Fashion Week coverage »The Joe Fresh girl is always pretty, in a never-ambitious and always-achievable sort of way. After all, when your product is sold at grocery stores across the country, it’s best to avoid making a statement with a bleached eyebrow or dreadlocked hair. But that’s not to say Joe Fresh has to be completely vanilla: the beauty inspiration for their Fall 2012 show was Blow-Up, a sultry, swinging film from the ‘60s.

TFW backstage beauty: Dark, 1920s drama at Chloé Comme Parris

See all Toronto Fashion Week coverage »Moody and dramatic, the inspiration for makeup at Chloé Comme Parris was a 1920s aesthetic mixed with an “if you had a lot of money to dress up in black grungy clothes” sentiment. Grace Lee, lead makeup artist for Maybelline New York Canada, started by slightly lightening the tone of each model’s face with Maybelline Fit Me Liquid Foundation for a fresh, porcelain effect. Then dark purple eyeshadow—Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo 24Hr Cream Gel Shadow in “Pomegranate Punk”—was applied to the eye, followed by Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in “Mauve-ulous.” Both were layered in an almost translucent manner to give the eyes a hollowed out (think Clara Bow) look. Brown mascara kept lashes soft, however the lips were fully saturated with a rich coat of the same plum shade Lee used on the eyes.

From Jean Paul Gaultier and Haider Ackermann to Elizabeth Olsen and Lily Collins: 5 ways to wear bronze on your eyes and cheeks this season!
Hyper-pigmented golds, subtle silvers, dusty coppers—the list goes on and on. Metallics certainly have a range that ensures they appear on beauty trend reports season after season. In the last few weeks for instance, Fall 2012 runways have revealed a preference for rich jewel tones and duo-chromatic shades. But before we jump ahead, now’s the time to get glitzed up in spring’s favourite metallic: bronze.

Afternoon beauty fix: Update your makeup for spring without breaking the bank!
How can I update my makeup bag for spring without breaking the bank?
I love the notion of jumpstarting the season with your makeup choices, especially when exciting and inspiring colours are popping up in new nail polishes and lipsticks. However, showing some restraint while scouring the stores will save you a pretty penny and possibly even buyer’s regret.
