Beauty Fix: A body part you shouldn’t forget when it comes to anti-aging, the perfect pink blush and more
Every week our Beauty Fix columnist takes on your questions about makeup, skincare, hair and more. Have a beauty question we haven’t answered? Email us at beautyfix@fashionmagazine.com.
I work in a somewhat conservative environment, but I’m really drawn to metallics for fall. How can I incorporate this into my look without being over the top in the workplace?
Office dress codes are in place for a reason, so let’s not break any rules per se, but rather bend them ever so slightly. When looking at metallic beauty products, the key to finding something that’s agreeable with your office look is usually in the glitter or shimmer quotient of the product. You can easily swap out a creamy neutral nail polish for a shade like Joe Fresh Beauty Nail Polish in “Quartz” ($4, joefresh.com), which is a mid-tone duochrome purple metallic shade with a shimmer that reads as a glow in the bottle. A shade like this is actually quite understated and downright chic when sported on short nails. -

Queen’s Plate fashion: 10 picks for what to wear to Canada’s most stylish horse race
See our picks for what to wear to the Queen’s Plate »
Whether you’re equestrian obsessed, enjoy the excitement of racing or just want a reason to wear a Kate Middleton-worthy hat, the Queen’s Plate is where you should be this Sunday. Not only is it Canada’s oldest annual Thoroughbred race, it’s one with royal blessing. Queen Elizabeth has attended a number of times, as part of a tradition started by her father, King George IV. (Considering that you’ll never see the Queen look as happy as she does when she’s at a horse race, you know you’ll be in for a good time at Woodbine on Sunday!)
The other reason the Queen’s Plate is such a big deal is due to it being the first race in Canada’s Triple Crown—putting it on par with the biggest racing event in the United States, the Kentucky Derby. To celebrate, Woodbine is hosting a red carpet Hats & Horseshoes party at the Walking Ring, which is sure to draw Toronto’s most stylish set in their horse racing best. For the Queen’s Plate, this means big hats and fascinators, garden party dresses and prim shoes. To add even further style incentive to Sunday’s event, FashionMagazine.com will be there to crown the best dressed Hats & Horseshoes attendee. If you need some inspiration or are simply wondering what to wear to a horse race, read on to see our top picks for Queen’s Plate style.

We’ve been hit with a slew of fabulous new cosmetic lines lately (ahem, RiRi [Hearts] M.A.C and Alber Elbaz for Lancôme!) and as excited as we are, these glossy goods are sure to put a big dent in our wallets. Cue Joe Fresh’s Fall 2013 makeup collection. A new line of stylish, fresh and affordable cosmetics that are just as worthy of our excitement and much friendlier to our pockets. The fall line offers new colours, upgraded packaging, trendier shades and improved formulations.
Simone Otis, Joe Fresh beauty director, says the playful collection promises “classic essentials for any beauty kit,” while offering fun and trend-oriented options as well. Via press release, creative director Joe Mimran credits customer feedback as the collections main inspiration, citing that designs were modified to cater to customer wants. Most importantly, this includes the introduction of removable caps on Joe Fresh nail polish—the new two-piece lids will allow for easier application of nail polish and painting percision. Other things in the mix include lipstick duos (because we all love options), lip glosses with a seriously reduced “sticky” factor, statement-making metallic polishes, saturated pastel matte lipsticks and a particularly fierce new cobalt-blue mascara.

Joe Fresh Fall 2013 look book: 38 items that are just as stylish as they are covetable
See the Joe Fresh Fall 2013 collection »
Canadian favourite Joe Fresh is going back to black with their Fall 2013 collection. The look book for fall has just arrived, and it has a pitch perfect mix of basic wardrobe staples and embellished statement items that are certain to revamp your style. The fall collection, which is based on ‘90s Parisian street chic and described by creative director Joe Mimran as “so effortless and cool,” consists mainly of black and white looks. The brand, which is mostly known for their versatile cotton pieces and clean-cut denim, played around with new textures for their fall selection, offering everything from sequined cardigans to faux-fur mini skirts, not to mention a laser-cut sweatshirt or two. Some of the pieces had punk undertones, reminiscent of this year’s Met Gala theme, convincing us that well be seeing a lot more of this edgy style in the months to come.
Taking cues from the Joe Fresh Fall 2013 runway show, which offered countless styling possibilities for the mostly monochrome pieces. Mimran was not the only one sticking to darker shades for his fall collection. From Chanel to Isabel Marant to Alexander Wang, many designers turned down the volume on the colour palettes for the Fall 2013 runway shows.

Inside the Joe Fresh afterparty: 20 photos of the stylish set proverbially kicking off their heels after the Fall 2013 fashion show
Check out the photos from the Joe Fresh after-party »
Given the well-heeled ladies and gents that show up for a Joe Fresh fashion show, you’d never believe the label’s wears run as affordably as they do. Though as any Loblaws shopper in Canada knows, they do. After last night’s punky all-black Fall 2013 outing, showgoers were looking to kick off their heels (proverbially speaking) with signature orange cocktails, mini tacos and pulsing DJ beats at the private watering hole, Storys.
Fresh off the Fresh runway, models Heather Marks, Meaghan Collison and a group of studly males in tight sweaters flooded the room with just enough impossible beauty to make the ogling worth it. Creative director Joe Mimran and wife Kimberley Newport-Mimran showed up in coordinated head-to-toe black suiting, adding their own luxe touch to the non-colour of the night. As the two cozied up to Loblaws frontman Galen Weston, nightclub impresario Charles Khabouth and our favourite dandy, Bruce C. Bailey, an informal dance party broke out with queen of the moves, Andrea Bolley, at the forefront. Just an average rip roaring night in Toronto as of late, it seems.

The Joe Fresh girl cuts off all her hair and goes rocker chic for Fall 2013
See the full backstage gallery from Joe Fresh Fall 2013 »
There’s always been a pretty predictable pattern to the beauty for Joe Fresh: clean faces, rosy cheeks, a poppy lip and straight, simple hair—usually pulled back into a low ponytail. It’s a beauty routine that plays into the mass appeal of the brand, while also literally playing into the “Fresh” part of the Joe Fresh name.
For Fall 2013, however, the beauty was dictated by that other thing Joe Fresh is known for: being right-to-the-minute on-trend. As such, the cute ponytails were kicked to the curb in favour of punk-inspired cropped cuts. After all, with Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton covering up models’ hair with dark brown wigs and brands like Dior, Chanel and Givenchy all embracing short hair this season, it really is the time to cut it all off.
