With the end of fashion week in Toronto marking the close of Spring 2014 show season, it’s time we looked back at all the trends that emerged. As much as the runway sets the pace for what’s to come for the top Spring 2014 trends, the streets play a major role as show-going trendsetters give us the relatable breakdown of how to wear what’s hot next season. Prints take two spots on our top Spring 2014 trends list through those with a painterly quality and those influenced by international cultures. At Hérmes, Rousseau-inspired water lily florals were printed on luxurious fabrics while at Diane Von Furstenberg, dresses and skirts depicting an African wilderness roared. As for fashionable time travel, prepare to keep reminiscing about the youthful 1990s, which haven’t ceased to get reincarnated season after season. Designers like Rodarte, Balmain and Jason Wu have reinvented the decade’s essentials yet again. Meadham Kirchhoff Spring 2014

5. Meadham Kirchoff

A Meadham Kirchoff show is nothing if not spectacle, and the duo’s Spring 2014 show had all the stylings of one—throbbing ominous music, bright orange Pipi Longstockings wigs, oversized wide brim hats. But the real standouts were underneath all that: a broderie anglais bib worn overtop a intricately beaded floor-length dress, a lace-trimmed gingham full skirt worn under a gold python swing coat and a sleeve-slashed take on the classic Chanel suit. Queen Elizabeth I meets Hitchcock meets pastoral living never looked this good.

Burberry Spring 2014

4. Burberry

You can’t go wrong with pretty, and pretty is something Christopher Bailey does so well. Drop-shoulder felted coats were the perfect continuation of fall’s ice cream outerwear trend, while sheer pastel lace pencil skirts seem the perfect wardrobe essential this season. And speaking of pretty: consider a floral applique fold-over clutch your girlish must-have come spring.

Simone Rocha Spring 2014

3. Simone Rocha

On the last day of shows, Rocha cemented her wunderkind status with a pearl-laden collection of way updated ladylike styles. Frilly plastic covered crochet cocktail dresses? It’s a bondage meets babydoll genius move. Double for see-through, pearl-trimmed panels draping the sides of full skirts. Triple for pearl-trimmed knee high socks and shrouded veils.

Christoper Kane Spring 2014

1. Christopher Kane
There was no London collection as evenly well regarded as Christopher Kane’s for Spring 2014. “A revelation,” “highlight of fashion week,” “the best thing ever,” are only three versions of street buzz. A cross between science, psychedelia and an all-new take on florals, Kane raised his own personal bar higher than ever with popping text book applique on lace dresses, curved iridescent plastic insets on suiting and a dazzling metallic fuzz that made up skirt suits and dresses mid-way through the show. His cuts—midi length pleated A-line skirts, sophisticated suit jackets, ankle grazing slip dresses—are getting more and more mature each time. His everything else is what’s more modern than ever.

Jonathan Saunders Spring 2013

2. Jonathan Saunders

If the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, than Jonathan Saunders Spring 2014 was great indeed. Styled together, the slouched silk track pants, Western style leather and suede mix jackets, intricate sheer lace button downs and layered tie-dye effect slip dresses were a lesson in cool girl styling. Alone, they were kaleidoscopic bursts of newness we’re itching to get our hands on.

In a flurry of florals, (Harry) Styles spottings and yes, digi prints, London Fashion Week has come to a close for Spring 2014. It’s been a slice, or rather, several, with many of the city’s young talents stepping up the world stage with clever reworks on the city’s signature style. Crisp femininity was more present than ever, proving perhaps that London’s finest are ready to lose the more is more street look its residents are famous for.

Preen Spring 2014

Blue moon

Pale pink continues as a favourite for Spring 2014 with even the typically-strict strict Jean Pierre Bragaza dipping a toe into girl territory, though blue seemed most popular in varying shades—baby at Preen, denim at Holly Fulton, cobalt at David Koma and Topshop in all of the above.

Mulberry Spring 2014

Flora and fauna

Forget Miranda Priestley, designers are going full steam ahead with florals and nature-inspired prints for Spring 2014. At Mulberry, Emma Hill went out with bang-on floral-woven jacquard short suits and floral-appliqued signature tote bags for her last collection as the brand’s creative director. At Matthew Williamson, pink and yellow appliques found themselves on sixties-styled cocktail dresses while butterfly prints made their way down a swishy wideleg pant.

Sheer window

Nip slips seem the thing for Spring 2014. At J.W Anderson, pinched and pleated gauze-like nylon (or was it nylon?) gave way to his frothier side, ofttimes exposing skin whole.

Emilia Wickstead Spring 2014

Trapeze

This sixties favourite has been revved up for spring by London’s feminine set. Emilia Wickstead showed long billowing versions of the style in striking bright combos. Temperley’s two-piece version of the style layered magentas in varying brightness over one another.

Topshop Unique Spring 2014

Slip dresses

The nineties focus has ushered the slip dress back into our consciousness so forcefully that I can barely remember a time when it wasn’t. Topshop Unique’s considerably pared back spring featured two versions of the trend: cropped boho and ankle-grazing print-mixed silk. Under cool girl silk layers, Jonathan Saunders went tie-dye-like with green and blue on a striking peachy number.

We’re into the first few days of shows from London Fashion Week Spring 2014 and as per usual, this city’s penchant for girlish quirk has consumed us whole. Very much a natural progression from what was shown in both spring and fall of this year, London’s top talents seem to be giving us more of the same, but with a new spin. Who said there was ever enough of a good thing?

Fashion month may have finally wrapped, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to forget about the trends that emerged for Fall 2013 on the many runways of New York, London, Milan, Paris and Toronto—In fact, it’s time for them to take front and centre. While shoppers everywhere are snapping up the best of the selling floor’s offerings for spring and summer, designers, buyers and editors alike are busy prepping ahead. And since we know y’all like to keep ahead of the curve, we’ve sorted through hundreds of photos and selected 10 of the top Fall 2013 trends so that you can mentally prep (and save) too!

Next season, it’s all about fur, which landed in both faux and real on runways including Marni, JW Anderson, and most strikingly at Fendi, where it was combined in a dizzying multitude of punky ways. The 1990s were back for another resurgence, continuing Spring 2013’s grunge trend at Saint Laurent in Paris and Chloé Comme Parris right here at home. On the street, the look was easily created by many fashion week attendees who layered plaids on waists, under jackets and even on tights. And while practically speaking, it may be no major surprise that outerwear was one of the top Fall 2013 trends, this show season we saw jackets take on new forms with quilting, oversized shapes and bold colours which were mirrored outside the shows, with equally interesting choices hitting the pavement

If there’s one thing you can count on London Fashion Week for, it’s newness. While the other three headlining fashion week cities (they would be New York, Milan and Paris, if you needed a refresher) are largely responsible for creating the viable trends of any given season, London is known as the breeding ground for new talent, new technologies and new wild ideas that are sure to become trends way into the future. The Fall 2013 show season was no different, as the various London Fashion Week shows showed all sorts of new things for us to ogle over, question and get into. While the international collections are only half way through there is no doubt that some Spring 2013 trends have been set. London Fashion Week elaborated on some of the trends that we first spotted in New York making spring style seem clearer than ever. Spring 2013 promises bold fashion ready for risk takers. Those who thought the crop top was a phase seem to have been proven wrong. Look for bare bellies and plenty of skin throughout the collections—start those crunches now.

Skin is definitely in, as leather frequents the catwalks for Spring 2013. At Mulberry, leather-on-leather takes the typically non-summer fabric for a ride dropping it right in the middle of its sugary sweet sixties-inspired collection. Meanwhile, defined digital prints continue to develop for Spring 2013 in the hands of their mistress, Mary Katrantzou: vivid images take us on a trip with international banknotes and postage stamps.

Since we last checked in with Kate Middleton and Prince William, they’ve travelled deeper and deeper into the South Pacific and, as such, are dressing the part. Don’t believe us? On Friday Kate was wearing a long-sleeve dress and a head scarf while walking in stockings through a mosque—today the Duchess is barefoot and wearing traditional beaded necklaces on a remote topical island. But! Let’s not get ahead of ourselves! On Saturday morning the couple visited Malaysia’s Danum Valley Conservation Area and explored the rainforest. (Are we the only ones who are reminded of an exhibit in the Natural History Museum when looking at the photos?)

Among the many highlights of last night’s Olympic Closing Ceremonies, one of our favourites was definitely the supermodel en masse march, a fashion moment that completely cemented London’s role as one of the industry’s capitals. Some of fashion’s most recognized faces, including Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell (the definite stars of the show) along with Lily Cole, Stella Tennant, Lily Donaldson, Georgia May Jagger, Karen Elson, Jourdan Dunn and David Gandy, were all clad in seven of Britain’s most revered designers.

With a mere 44 days left until the annual Toronto International Film Festival begins again, the full list of films (not to mention their star-studded casts) has finally been released to the public. From the highly anticipated time-travelling mobster flick Looper to the visually decadent retelling of Anna Karenina, this year’s TIFF lineup sounds like a film buff’s dream come true. Of course, as fashion-inclined folk, we’re almost as excited about seeing what the stars will be wearing on the red carpet come September 6 as we are the films.
